Boozy, humid, intoxicating, and dangerous. A sip of absinthe in the back of a burlesque club playing Artie Shaw's "Nightmare". A pair of rhinestoned velvet opera gloves drawing a knife. Wafts of heady jasmine wrapping ghostly tendrils around you and squeezing.

Named after a piece of transgressive underground queer cinema from 1963, the scent takes after its namesake in its campy, candied decadence paired with a sultry, nocturnal jasmine. Just as the film pairs old Hollywood glamour with outrageous debauchery, Flaming Creature manages to be seductive and alluring without taking itself too seriously.

mysterious neon green over misty black

I tried this on a test strip at Scent Bar and I was bewitched. It was orange candy with a little bite of pepper (like a Sicilian citrus salad) that dried down to reveal a mysterious, entrancing smoke scent. Not like a campfire but more of a fresh, outdoor smoke, like smelling a controlled burn from miles away.

I thought about it Flaming Creature for months and finally got it, and ended up disappointed with its scent on my skin. It's mostly a dusty, spicy jasmine on me. No orange ring pop, no pink pepper, no incense, no smoke. It's redeemed by the complex dry down: I think I'm getting the sandalwood, and the wormwood lends it a sweet medicinal flavor. It's on me, but it's not what I expected.

It's a Southern cemetery at midnight, humid but chilly. Still mist hangs around jasmine vines, obscuring someone just out of your view.

Hip and Funky Grandma

Warm and Spicy, Smoky. Has the faintest hinnt of baby wipes? Not powdery necessarily, but just that clean youthful freshness. Feels like a hint of florals poking through? I could see myself wearing this. Feels like a winter day by the fire, all snuggled up doing a self care day with lots of your moms floral beauty products. As I keep smelling, the baby wipe / floral scent is getting stronger as it dries down. It’s like a really hip and fiery grandma.

After reading the notes: The jasmine and pink pepper stand out. On her site, there is an orange ring pop accord and I totally get that after examining, but wouldn’t pick it up on my own. It gives a nice citrus fresh punch.

Dank patchouli with spidery tendrils of smoke and heady rum. To my mind’s nose this is what Calypso’s hideaway in Pirates of the Caribbean smells like. It’s atmospheric af. A cavort-naked-in-the-woods and seduce-the-local-magistrate scent, for any gender.

One of the most beautiful (and frustrating) aspects of fragrance is the way some notes will be invisible to some wearers but oppressive to others. I think I lucked out with Flaming Creature, as I get none of the dusty or soapy notes others found. While the jasmine lasted me only an hour, the smoke and rum lingered throughout. The patchouli haunted my jacket through the following day. My lifestyle lends little opportunity for cavorting or seduction (and I'm not a big patchouli gal) so I’ll be passing on the full bottle, but look forward to costume parties with this sampler.

Mental Snapshot: A wooden network of taverns and apothecaries lofted in a mangrove forest. The haven of an Everglades Baba Yaga. Revellers twine under curtains of rainwater-glazed jasmine, spirits kindled by fiery moonshine and occult tinctures.

Moody, smokey and ethereal

I stopped to smell some night-blooming-jasmine and it gave me extra appreciation for this fragrance. It’s so spot on

While the jasmine, woods and smoke are the most prominent, there’s also a watercolor wash of wormwood, adding an enchanting herbal facet and the orange ring-pop accord adds a subtle sweetness that really rounds things out for me.
