the elusive flowering cake vine
I tell you what, for the longest time, for years, I was like no, no sweets or gourmands for me, thanks, not my thing! And now it’s weird, it’s basically all I want. And yet…I don’t actually want to smell like literal cake. Like a baked good. Yes, the smell of glaze drizzled atop freshly fried hot doughnuts is mouthwatering, but I just don’t want that to be the scent that clings to my clothes or that precedes my bod with I walk into a room. I don’t want the smell of leavening agents or the chemistry of eggs and flour and sugar, or really even, a sweet, fluffy crumb. Simply put, I don’t want to smell like food. I want the artistic rendering of cake, a cake run through the filters of someone’s imagination and maybe in the end it’s not really cake at all, but still... you know it when you smell it. Annabel’s Birthday Cake is a bit like this. This is the fragrance from the elusive flowering cake vine, a rare species of flora that only blooms once a year on the date of one’s birth, pearly pink petals that exude the scent of rich, fruity vanilla bean and heliotrope frosting and closes after a brief 12-hour window with a soft, powdery breath of white chocolate musk.

Liminal birthday
This is one of the fragrances I’ve seen everyone talk about in reference to Marissa Zappas, and it is a banger.

To my nose, the fragrance opens with a white floral lemon cake frosting, hand studded tuberoses atop a pastel pink and yellow cake. I then get a hint of cocoa butter, like freshly moisturised skin, or hand cream. There’s a static element that you really have to pay attention to get, like rubbing balloons on your head at a birthday party, or the static electricity of a ball pit at a McDonald’s play place.

This fragrance aches with yearning, and a longing to return to a place you’ll never go back to. It’s the feeling of still being a little girl despite being in your mid 20s, and the disillusion and nostalgia for a time you considered simpler.

the latex note says it all
i love this fragrance. i'm a huge enjoyer of Zappas' work and this was my introduction. this is a beautiful reimagined birthday cake, painting a whole scene rather than making the cake edible. i used to hate gourmands, but now i realize they just need to be balanced with a fun note. this is an indulgent, hyperrealistic and poppy perfume for those who cried on their birthdays. the heliotrope i can imagine being tubed as petals onto the cake, helium filled ballons behind a young girl pouting, as the floral and zesty vanilla frosting rots teeth. it is not easily wearable and for that i appreciate it; you wont smell like anyone else!

clownquette
Sweet and moody, strange and twinkly. There’s no box-mix funfetti to this cake. It’s waxy marzipan fondant, topped with honeycomb and desiccated rose petals. The cake itself is lemony, layered with custard. And the crown jewel: that telltale squeak of latex. It’s very sugar-and-spice, but not so innocent. The whole fragrance has this hazy vintage tone and feels rather melancholy. Very haunted porcelain doll, very Tim Burton love interest. Very sexy sad clown. Adorable, but unstable. Pairs well with cutting your own bangs and singing along to Imogen Heap in a Vegas hotel bathroom. (Not that I’d have such experience).

Mental Snapshot: It's the little heiress's birthday party, all frilly tablecloths and gilded candelabras. A harlequin damsel jingles about, bound to serve the wicked Don Montresor. She’s in her full Carnival press: white paint, rouge, ruffed particolour velvet. The family pampers her well, but there's scarcely any blush to her nose or honk to her shoes. Shouldn’t have gone to clown school.

tl;dr: clownquette

Nostalgic Celebrations
Delicious Sugared cake, hints of citrus but not overbearing. Smells like icing you licked off your fingers, and that scent remains. A plastic/fruity note to it that reminds me of crayons and dolls. Smells like the powder that lines balloons before they are blown up. Its not totally gourmand, but it is very nostalgic and special. Smells like youthful mindsets, but feels adult and mature. Cold icing sitting in the fridge at micheals art supply party room. I could see this becoming my signature scent when i want something comforting and childlike.

After reading notes: The tuberose frosting and helitrope provide a more mature profile for this otherwise sweet scent. The lemon sugar adds that hint of citrus in the opening that quickly dies down. I dont get a heavy rose or floral scent from this. The tonka + heliotrope is whats giving it that plasticy doll scent.

Overall: My favorite of the house, something I’m most drawn to wearing. Even though i go after this scent profile, it feels unique and different enough to get a full bottle.

Latex, delicate florals, and cacao brought together to evoke gauzy sunlight and white frosting straight from the tub.

Bracingly fresh lemon-sugar but, despite the "latex" note, doesn't veer into gourmand uncanny valley.

don’t be fooled by the name! this has some lovely powdery florals in it that when combined with the vanilla buttercream make for an elevated gourmand

from decant. expected sickly gourmand + PVC outgassing. got soft powdery vanilla floral with subtle, just-a-hint-of-weird lightning ozone

Floral semi-gourmand. Vanilla and blossoms, nice. I hardly smell latex. I imagined it more cake-like. Very wearable.
