Rich oud resinous floral fresh blend
An overdue sampling of one of Motif Olfactif’s most recent releases, Penombre, from 2022, which I’d somehow overlooked. It’s a dense but dry blend of citruses, resins, and ambergris, primarily, to my nose. Mandarin, oud, ambergris, and a pinch of rose color this beautifully as an oud-featured but not oud-led mix, still with freshness and brightness meeting the darkness and raw intensity of oud, albeit smoothly delivered. Definitely among my favorites of the darker, denser, more daring fragrances from this lovely house curated by Oswald Pare. It’s elegantly put together, feels complete and well-considered, and is not too heavy-headed in any one aspect—florals, oud, ambergris.
Penombre is EDP concentration, though it feels like an extrait in terms of density, and curiously is only available in a 15ml size (whereas most fragrances in the line are available at 50ml) for $55, sold both via the house website and American Perfumer. Perhaps this is due to the availability of materials, usually the reason for limited volume.
