Fresh, fruity, aquatic, easy to wear
This is my sampling of Makai, one of the two new releases from Motif Olfactif inspired by Hawaii. It seems fitting, given its Hawaiian inspiration, that Makai is a fruity aquatic, smelling like mango with mixed with sea breeze and musk. It’s fairly straightforward in this respect, but it’s instantly pleasant and evocative of both the beach and summer, and perhaps very importantly is an addition that is not at all redundant within the Motif Olfactif line up.
For a fragrance featuring a prominent mango note, the overall effect is not too sweet but rather a blend between the sweetness of the mango and relative sharpness of the sea breeze, with musk softening both sides. It’s fun, playful, and not too serious, either, apt for everyday / casual wearing.
The pricing of Makai is very reasonable, at $110 for 50ml, in 24%/extrait concentration, with samples available on the website, the only means through which this fragrance is currently available. There is a 2-pack available of the two Hawaii Travel series perfumes, Makai and Huaka’i. The American Perfumer boutique of Louisville also sells the brand but does not yet sell this specific fragrance per its website.
Overall I like Makai as a nice option from the house and a pivot toward something fresh and aquatic.
