Beautiful resinous blend with hints of spices, booze, and elderflower
Moments is one of the two newest releases from Motif Olfactif (along with Serenade), a sweet, spicy, herbal resinous blend that seems to mix a gourmand with resins and some curious floral/herbal ingredients.

It’s a very interesting note breakdown so I don’t want to omit any of it—in the order per the website, rum, cognac, vanilla, ylang ylang, oakwood, cedarwood, elderflower, sandalwood, labdanum, myrrh, and oud. Fittingly, it’s sweet but not predominantly so, more so in a resinous way, but the resins are mixed—not just sweet, but a touch smoky and just a hint animalic, although the animalic / oud part is fairly faintly in the background. And it’s also woody with light floral touches while having some of the booze of the rum and cognac.

It really is a fascinating, multifaceted intersection of notes, with the result being a concoction that leans darker and is vaguely reminiscent of offerings from a house like Slumberhouse in having a darker, bolder, boundary-pushing quality to it. It does not smell like any Slumberhouse fragrance in particular, though, which is great, as, while it fosters a bit of déjà vu, it nonetheless feels new and interesting, while being comparably rich to the SH catalogue.

Serenade is priced at $110 for 50ml and is in EDP concentration, very reasonable given that the perfume is strong and inventive, something I’d really enjoy wearing as the weather cools down, especially. It might be my second favorite of the line after De Toma a Zouma. Overall, I’m very impressed.

At the end of a night in summer
The new day is probably just around the corner. The wooden barrel sounds pretty empty too. Drink one last glass of cognac with me. To this moment. Before it fades away. Light is still low on the horizon. Over houses and streets, all tired and silent. The first rays of vanilla in a fog of rum. For a moment. Here where we are. Where the summer sun warms you in the morning, the Holder shimmers in front of the wooden wall, it feasts and tickles you uninhibitedly. Like a small child. For a moment. Myrrh crystals shimmer and swirl in the wind. Your gaze flows from the swing to the mulchy ground. It sticks to your fingers, warns you too much. You rub your eyes. In this moment. The morning is clouded, which now lies in veils. Give me your hand. We are both served.

Oswald Pare of Motif Olfactif is a self-taught perfumer who made the leap from reviewing for a YouTube community to creating his own fragrances to delve deeper into the magic of scent. "Moments" projects moderately and opens with a furious accord of fruity flowers, oak barrel, cognac and rum, from which the sweet and sour elderflower soon emerges to provide a bright and clear, almost sparkling counterweight to the creamy sandalwood and vanilla from the base. The brandy in between soon crystallizes into myrrh and the mulchy, resinous, subtly smoky oud underneath becomes perceptible, although it always blurs into the warm, creamy woods, for which you should already have a preference here. In the drydown, which is close to the skin, the balance is restored with the oud, the rather dark vanillas and the now more distinct ylang blossoms.
