At The School Of Natural Soaps
Smelling Memories is like visiting a school of natural soaps enriched with ornamental plant extracts. A master soap maker below our eyes teaches us how to make natural soap according to an ancient recipe with the classic “cold kneading” method. Let’s imagine taking the white flowers, the green leaves, and the orange rind from the bigarade plant, a handful of vegetable musk, and mixing it all with a neutral base paste for soap. From this mixture comes the aroma that distinguishes Memories. Is a cologne still good these days? Yes, since it is classic yet modern, clean, and fresh. Memories is not the ordinary eau de cologne, more green than citrus, pretty different from Echt Kölnisch Wasser Eau de Cologne or Colonia Eau de Cologne. Anonymous on the first try, it will still surprise you with something special then. Memories is like leaking raindrops from citrus leaves after a summer storm—uncannily liken to Mugler Cologne, a scent I must always have in my collection and cannot run out of it. Miserably, the original one was discontinued, and a new one is around these days. Memories in my beloved Mugler Cologne.

The scent surprises me immediately with its freshness and greenery, like a dewy morning breeze. There is a heavy dose of bitter oranges and leaves as if the freshly picked fruit and leaves have been distilled together. I love this citrus and bitter component; the green part of the leaves takes away that sweetness that would make opening trivial. Thus, the opening is citrus and green. There is a lot of fresh and green zestiness courtesy of abundant citrus foliage or petitgrain.

The more it grows, the more the soapiness takes place, bringing back some wonderful childhood memories. If you are indoors and a little hot, the sweat and heat from your skin will amplify the projection, repeatedly making you feel its bitter, citrusy aroma. I can’t help but wear this scent before a gym workout; it’s divine and stick until I take a deserved shower. In the middle stage, neroli flowers shine, supported by leafy petitgrain and a morsel of white jasmine sambac. At this stage, a green soapiness reigns.

When the fragrance dries down, I get a sense of resinous muskiness, akin to olibanum sap that blends an overdose of white musk. Besides, even if not mentioned, I bet a smidgen of dry cedarwood is secretly mixed in. The incense extends the longevity and adds smokiness to the citrus face, so the aroma is never too harsh or tart.

The result is a fresh aroma, which can last for more than half a day on the skin, and even if after a while I don’t feel the scent exhale, the people close to me notice it. It’s one of the few colognes that gives me the feeling of being freshly showered, even after hours, and its greenish aroma is delicious. I like to wear it in spring and summer under a rigorously white shirt. Together they intensify the feeling of candour. The scent is perfect for daytime, inoffensive for working places, evening parties, and nighttime when the weather warms up. Thanks, Olfactory Lab, for bringing back an almost lost masterpiece.

I'm basing my feelings on a bottle I've owned since May 2023.
