demure opulence
I have been obsessed with this house, and have been finding these parfums to be not just a mode of self-expression, but evocative compositions that trigger points of vulnerability within me--an aroma-psychotherapy if you will.
initially Shalini comes off as super green, but easily it creams out into the bouquet of white flowers, musk and sandalwood. it is generally pretty intimate and has close to zero projection, but it does last a surprisingly long time. I once took a shower with it on and it somehow survived it.
when I first sniffed this, I felt weirdly embarrassed. it immediately took me to the very first time I stepped into a Neiman Marcus as a very young child (maybe 4 years old?) with my mom. I felt unworthy, out-of-place and a little frightened by how different that space felt compared to the outside world.
I think what I was primarily smelling was the neroli, which felt like pure elevated class to me. this fragrance smells really, really expensive as it uses the top-tier versions of the ingredients. In a way the fragrance was more able to evoke that feeling I had back then than any other neroli fragrance I surely must've come across since then, replicating my 4-year-old sensitivity to any new stimuli.
somehow, this scent smells both very young and very mature. in interviews, Shalini herself said that this was a portrait of her starting off as a young girl/woman. spending a couple days with this scent, I feel as if I could heal something within me.
