Exploring New Scents #2 | Zoologist: Beaver

Top Notes: Fresh Outdoor Air, Linden Blossom, Wood Shavings, Wild Vegetation
Heart Notes: Damp Air, Dry Wood, Water, Light Musk*
Base Notes: Heavy Musk*, Dark Woods, Vanilla, Amber, Castoreum*, Leather*

With a name like Beaver, you know it's going to be an interesting experience. Would the scent be more about the animal or more about the environment? The first spray was not overpowering. In fact, this was much more unassuming than Camel making it a more tolerable experience.

The first notes which pop up were fresh greenery, wood and ocean air. Odd because beavers don't tend to hang out at the ocean sipping a Mai Tai, though some aren't opposed to chilling in a mix of salt and fresh water, so these notes worked. But if you keep sniffing around the wrist a bit more you will notice a hint of castoreum. What is castoreum you ask? Beaver secretion. Yep, it's a musky secretion to mark their territory. This may make you seriously question this fragrance, but please don't. It's surprisingly refreshing and the animalic note passes quickly.

After sniffing my wrist a few more times, there was another scent which morphed from the freshness of Beaver: Band-Aid. I'm sure the majority of people reading this blog have had the experience of grabbing a box of Band-Aids and opening one of the individually wrapped coverings inside. The smell of a freshly opened Band-Aid is a unique scent and very distinct. Apparently, Beaver has some lying around in his lair, because it was a very prominent note. Looking at the list of notes, I have no idea which one could cause this smell. Possibly the leather mixed with other notes?

After an hour, Beaver begins to morph into a woodsy, leather, ocean scent with a sprinkling of sweetness. A very beautiful, mellow fragrance. But Beaver still has a boo boo because, Band-Aid is still present, though more of a backseat driver.

By the 4-5 hour mark, Beaver was a faded memory heading into the skin scent zone. I find that of the three Zoologist fragrances I have tried, none last longer than five hours, unless they are sprayed on clothing, then they will last lightly even until the next day. The only thing to note, or at least on me is that the scent on my clothing is very different than on my skin, so this can cause some confusion to the nose.

So what do I think of Beaver? I like it. It's rather refreshing and light with a hint of leather to dirty up the scent which works perfectly for this hard little worker. Think of a beaver working diligently on it's home surround by fresh air, water and wood. But his movement causes the dirt to come to the surface adding even more earthiness to his environment. A light breeze carries a slight sweetness through the air as the beaver surveys his new home. His final touch is to add a new box of Band-Aids to his new abode.

So, that's Beaver in a nutshell on my body chemistry. The next day, I thought about this fragrance a lot. I have never smelled anything quite like this one. It took me on a journey, and part of me wants a full bottle to live it again. This one was very addictive for some reason and I don't quite know why. Definitely give it a try if you can obtain a sample. It's worth it!
