The signature
Before I started my fragrance journey, I’ve never even heard of the term “signature fragrance”. I knew I liked some fragrances, I hated others. And I knew for sure that all of them were overpriced.
That’s years ago. Now I know better. I love some fragrances (especially the ones you haven’t smelled yet). There are others I like a littlebit less, but still I respect them. And there’s no such thing as “overpriced”, lol. The more fragrances in my closet the better (many of them are miniatures and decants mind you). And when a new fragrance arrived, I’m already looking for the next. The addiction is real.
So there I am with my drawers full of fragrances, every day something new. Sometimes even wearing two or three fragrances at the same time because I just can’t wait to smell them. It got me thinking. There are many people I love, that wear the same fragrance year after year. I really do remember them by their smell. And I love that! A real signature smell, I wish I could have that.

But it’s already too late isn’t it? I’m in too deep. But I’m trying. When I have “the itch” to buy a new full bottle, initially I won’t. When I finish a decant, and I’m not overly sad about it, I leave it at that. It was a beautiful memory. Many more fish in the sea. I’ll be really picky about what resonates with me and what doesn’t.
Or will that set the standard even higher and more unenjoyable?
Just some self-reflection, dear reader. Do you have other suggestions? Please let me know. And fragrance suggestions are also welcome, lol!
Influencer terminology does not apply in real life and especially with collectors . Collectors cannot possibly have a signature scent. Maybe 10 signature scents they can present in one video on youtube. My insta and youtube is full of perfume collectors and perfume influencers. I never watch any videos from them anymore .
My solution is kind of a hybrid, I have 4 fragrances I wear a month, so I can associate memories or certain times in my life with those fragrances. Also much easier to pick what I'm going to wear in the morning when choosing one out of 4 rather than one out of 55.
What worked for me was finding a scent profile I naturally gravitate towards (in my case it's oriental) because I know most of the stuff I'll be testing/buying will consist of those notes.
So even if I'm not wearing Interlude Man, I'm most likely wearing something that has some Frankincense in it, or is at least ambery and a bit spicy.
As such, it's easier for people to associate me with a certain scent profile. Something in their brain will click and they'll realize that it's a me, mario.
I think that's more or less the true meaning of signature. More of a scent profile kind of a deal than a specific fragrance.
What is a signature scent, really? Is it a scent you enjoy or wear the most? Or is it a scent people associate you by? Because then it only works if you have literally 1 fragrance, or a very narrow and specific collection.
You would probably wear something more mass-appealing and inoffensive to the office, so your colleagues will associate you with that smell.
However, when going out, you surely want to stand out and reach for a more sweet or challenging scent profile, so your friends associate you with something entirely different.
The same thing goes for special occasions and your family members. So how exactly can one tackle this first world problem?
And yeah, first world problems lol. But much fun to talk about right?
