DALL-E and Perfume – Part 1: Oil Paintings

In this blog series, I want to explore with you what works DALL-E is capable of when you bring the subject of fragrances into play. The topic of oil paintings is to make a start.

What is DALL-E?

DALL-E is a computer program from OpenAI that can generate images from a simple text description. Artificial neural networks are used for this purpose. The artificial intelligence can generate completely new concepts and produce images of the most diverse styles.

To start with, let the artificial intelligence create oil paintings. We start with the following sentence:

Experiment 1:
"An oil painting depicting a woman with a perfume bottle in her hand, merrily spraying on the perfume."

Wow, I think this is quite impressive! You have to remember that these pictures never existed before - not even close. They are completely reimagined works of art painted by a machine. Beautiful and shocking at the same time.

Let's continue with another sentence. Let's try this one:

Experiment 2:
"An oil painting of a man who dropped a perfume bottle in the bathroom. Shards on the floor, tears in his eyes."

These images seem a bit more abstract to me. I think they still convey very strongly the desperation of the man. Is the person coming out of the wall in the second picture? 🧐

Let's try something that presents the AI with a few more challenges!

Experiment 3:
"An oil painting showing a few people testing perfume together in a department store."

Very interesting! The department store atmosphere really comes into its own. In the last photo, I'm not sure if the man has really found his dream fragrance here....

Let's see if we can also bring the perfumers into play.

Experiment 4:
"An oil painting of a mad perfumer working by night on a new secret fragrance formula."

Just great. This is certainly where the fragrances that dreams are made of are created!

Last but not least, I would like to test the limits of the possible with the following sentence:

Experiment 5:
"An oil painting of a cute cat on a motorcycle spraying itself with perfume, sunset in the background."

Incredible, but even that doesn't seem to be a problem for the AI. Bravo! I hope you enjoyed this little excursion into the creepy world of artificial intelligence.

If you have any ideas for this series, feel free to post them in the comments. I will then present your best ideas in another article.
