“Spicy Road” by Une Nuit Nomade: A Fragrant Journey Along the Malabar Coast

With With “Spicy Road”, the French label Une Nuit Nomade presents a new unisex fragrance that captures the warmth, spice, and sensuality of South India’s Spice Coast.

The opening of “Spicy Road” unfolds with a dry, aromatic spiciness, characterized by black pepper and clove leaf. At the heart of the composition, vanilla and incense blend into a warm, sensual accord that rounds out the spicy character with a soft, slightly sweet depth. The fragrance concludes with a powerful base of Akigalawood®, Georgywood®, and fine cedarwood, which lends the scent its long-lasting, warm, woody signature.

The inspiration: Kerala’s “black gold”

The inspiration for “Spicy Road” lies in the tropical backwaters of Kerala. For centuries, the Malabar Coast was a major port of call for European sailors such as Vasco da Gama, who reached India by sea in 1498. At the heart of this trade was pepper, the so-called “black gold,” one of the region’s most coveted commodities. The port of Kochi (Cochin) developed into a major hub through which these precious goods found their way to Europe.

The Eau de Parfum captures the atmosphere of a journey aboard a kettuvallam—a traditional cargo barge once used to transport rice and spices through the lagoons of Kerala. Along the waterways, pepper vines wind their way around coconut palms, while the scent of tropical fruits hangs in the humid air.

The wind has risen over Kerala. Along the Malabar Coast, the backwaters of Alleppey unfold in lagoons and canals stretching across Lake Vembanad. Aboard a traditional kettuvallam, once a wooden fishing boat crafted from coir and timber, the journey slows, suspended in time.

Around the rice fields, papaya and mango trees stand alongside coconut palms wrapped in pepper vines, their tendrils winding around the protective trunks. One catches a glimpse of the dark berries, that black gold traded for centuries through the port of Kochi.

Behind the fragrance is perfumer Fanny Bal. Fascinated by the world of fragrances from a young age, she laid the foundation for her career by studying chemistry before graduating from the renowned ISIPCA perfumery school in Versailles. Her path led her to IFF, where she trained as a protégé of master perfumer Dominique Ropion and created one of her first iconic creations, “Sale Gosse,” for Frédéric Malle in 2017. Since 2025, she has been contributing her expertise as a senior perfumer at Givaudan.

Their goal in creating “Spicy Road” was to harmonize spicy intensity and sensuality.

With Spicy Road, I sought to express the warmth and vitality of Kerala pepper through a woody, spicy composition. Around this spice, I built an accord blending vanilla and incense, enriched with an overdose of Akigalawood with its peppery, spicy facets, to create a balance between intensity and sensuality. This fragrance explores the meeting point between the energy of spices and the addictive depth of woods.
