How the Moulin Rouge Got Its Name
Once upon a time, there was a little cherry that saw the light of day in a chemistry lab. She was called Rouge because her red color was brighter than that of any other cherry. Her skin was pure and flawless; no insect and no hailstone had ever harmed her. Only her scent could not compete with that of a natural cherry. When she rolled through the lab, she left behind a blood-red trail.

Especially on weekends, when the lab was deserted, the little cherry Rouge grew very bored and dreamed of the life of humans. She was curious about what life in the big city might be like. And whether there might be more cherries like her there. One day, when the opportunity arose, she hid in the jacket pocket of an inattentive person and took a trip into the streets of the big city. She marveled at the colorful life and the many people. And she had to be very careful that no one stepped on her while she rolled over the sidewalks. Nobody noticed her, even though she was dragging a blood-red trail behind her. People were far too busy and preoccupied with other things. Rouge admired the splendor of a huge church with two square towers on an island in the river, and she was startled by a terribly ugly iron tower that reached up to the sky.

But her escape did not go unnoticed in the lab for long. It was already getting dark when a gigantic Ambroxan cloud set out to recapture the little cherry. It followed the blood-red trail that Rouge had left behind.

When the black cloud arrived in the city, many people fled from the dreadful stench; they were afraid of a chemical accident and held cloths over their mouths and noses. Others, however, enjoyed the scent of the Ambroxan cloud; they stopped and inhaled the woody fragrance deeply.

The little cherry Rouge smelled the cloud before she saw it. After all, they were well acquainted from the lab. But she did not want to be caught again so quickly. She rolled up a hill where a white church with a dome stood. How beautiful, she thought. But the Ambroxan cloud was getting closer. Behind the white church lay a rundown neighborhood with narrow alleys. Here she could hide better. It stank terribly of garbage and feces; the people here hardly noticed the black cloud. They had other worries. The little cherry now had to be careful not only of the cloud but also of the many hungry rats. As fast as she could, Rouge rolled over the sidewalk and discovered an old mill. She squeezed herself into the abandoned building through a small crack in the door. Fortunately, the rats could not follow and stayed behind at the door.

Completely out of breath and with a pounding heart, she explored the old mill. Was she now a lost cherry? Or was it her destiny to breathe new life into this building? Rouge discovered in the dilapidated structure a sparkling bottle with a black cap that reminded her of a dome from the Belle Époque. Curiously, she opened the heavy cap and … a Charming Jeannie stood before her. “You have three wishes because you freed me!” said the Charming Jeannie to Rouge. The little cherry was delighted and said: “My first wish is that the Ambroxan cloud does not bring me back to the lab. My second is that I can live in this magical bottle. And the third is that this mill bears my name and many people come in and out here so that I never get bored again…” The Charming Jeannie winked and granted the three wishes. And the little cherry lived happily ever after in the bottle and had a lot of fun with the colorful hustle and bustle of people in the Moulin Rouge…

About the scent: The Charming Jeannie made the mistake of packing a hefty portion of the Ambroxan cloud into the bottle along with the alcohol. And that unfortunately ruins the scent for me. A piercing note follows me from the top note to the dry down, so that I can hardly perceive the other fragrance notes. It does not smell wicked at all to me, and cherry, vanilla, or tonka fade behind the synthetics. The sharp disruptive note combined with sticky sweetness has stuck in my memory so strongly that I have not yet been able to bring myself to another test, especially since the longevity is frighteningly good…

I wanted to like it so much, and even though my photographer's heart beats faster at the sight of the stylish bottle with the red liquid, it will probably leave me again…

Dolce Vita with Sweet Thoughts...
From the sharing of a dear perfumista, I managed to get a large decant of Dolci Pensieri and have extensively tested the fragrance over the past few days. And every day I like it more...

The name of the fragrance means "sweet thoughts," and I think it fits perfectly. When you Google the name, you find numerous patisseries...

While the opening comes across as quite vintage and doesn't spark any enthusiasm in me, the fragrance develops throughout the day into a very pleasant companion. I see myself strolling through a rose garden on a sunny autumn day; the table is already set with sweet treats. By the roses, I think more of wild and natural roses, not of highly cultivated cut flowers. Like a café overgrown with wild roses, for example, and in front of it, waiting in the sun are espresso and cantuccini.

My untrained nose doesn't detect peonies and rose geraniums, but the not-too-sweet vanilla provides the pastry feeling. And there’s something warm and woody in the background, probably the sandalwood. Overall, the fragrance feels soft, warm, and just the right amount of sweet to me. The rose is strong but integrated and not dominant. This keeps the fragrance bright and reminds me again and again of sunlight. The yellow color of the fragrance fits perfectly with that. For me, it is therefore a daytime scent and not an evening one.

Typical for Profumum Roma, the fragrance is very oily; you can see the high concentration of fragrance oils on the skin. It lasts from morning to evening; and even the next morning, I still catch a delicate hint on my skin. But it’s not a powerhouse like, for example, Confetto. The first hour, the scent cloud is already enormous; after that, fortunately, it can only be perceived at arm's length. This makes it suitable for many occasions. But best for sunny autumn walks through the colorful forest of leaves. Or for coffee and cake on a sunny terrace. I can also imagine it well in spring. For cold winter days, there are more suitable scents, even from Profumum Roma. And in summer, I don’t see it at all.

Even for Profumum Roma standards, the fragrance is expensive; 100ml costs 265 EUR on the website. As with many fragrances, there is also a travel bottle with 18ml for 89 EUR.

My conclusion is already in the headline - this fragrance is suited for a day when you indulge yourself, enjoy the sun, nature, and good food, and meet friends - Dolce Vita indeed. Whether it can sweeten a stressful workday, I still need to try out... ;-)

My South Sea Dream Scent
For this fantastic fragrance and for me the first review … After being seduced by a sample from a dear perfumer with the EdP, and shortly thereafter finding a good offer for the extrait, I couldn't resist. I love Ylang Ylang; and this scent immediately transports me back to a wonderful South Sea island, where I first smelled Ylang Ylang and admired the flowers. I dream myself back into the hammock between the coconut palms, surrounded by a tropical garden with a sea of flowers…

Regarding the scent progression, my untrained nose notes that Ylang Ylang is at the forefront from the very beginning. It smells almost identical to my aroma oil, with which I patiently revived my sense of smell after a Corona infection. Therefore, I can well imagine that this is real Ylang Ylang from the island of Nosy Be - near Madagascar - as described by Perris Monte Carlo. And not a synthetic imitation. Besides the dominant Ylang Ylang scent, I also recognize notes of jasmine, but no rose. I perceive the fragrance as strong, but not piercing. It feels warm, enveloping, and super suitable for daydreaming. Authentic tropical floral abundance… The base notes remain very much in the background for my nose; Ylang Ylang dominates the scent progression from beginning to end.

I found the EdP of Ylang Ylang Nosy Be to be more intense with an almost narcotic scent explosion; that was a bit too much for me… In Embrun d’Ylang by Guerlain, Ylang Ylang is significantly more subtle, and the vanilla gets more space. And compared to Ylang in Gold by Micallef, which I also tried, Ylang Ylang Nosy Be Extrait is significantly less sweet, more authentic, and also a more suitable scent for hot summer days.

This extrait is certainly only suitable for Ylang Ylang lovers… and for everyone who wants to embark on a scent journey into the tropical floral world. Thus, it remains a very special fragrance, not for every day and rather not for the office, but for me a dreamy scent that I can also well imagine on a gloomy winter day on the sofa. The longevity is very good for me; and a decent sillage was confirmed to me with “a scent cloud throughout the entire stairwell.” So, dose sparingly; given the price, that makes sense too ;-)
