One of the best Creeds

It’s a tie between this and GIT for me. Such a masculine, old school feel. It’s what you expect a highly intelligent, successful man to smell like. High class. Self confident. That’s what this exudes.

Performance is great. A powerful opening, that radiates a nice 4ft projection radius, and lasts for an easy 8+ hours. Sillage is also great; they will know where you have been, and where you have gone.

I prefer this over GIT because it performs better, and it’s less common in usage. It might feel “too old” for some, but if you’re “old enough” to wear it, you’re going to shine, as it is the scent of success.

old school is cool

Bois du Portugal certainly has an older style, a more mature and classy take on fragrance and it succeeds in everything it does. Forget your Invictus type of fragrance, this isn't your typical generic fresh aquatic with some sweet elements to appeal to a younger and hip audience. This one is different, this is for someone who wants to create an impression that will last.

BdP follows all the tropes you expect from a Fougere, it uses a lovely citrus opening as a bait and once it hooks you it sends you through a journey of lavender, vetiver, patchouli and woods that will leave you in awe. It's a timeless piece of perfumery cause it certainly has all the elements of a dated fragrance but it feels modern, it feels actual, it's just... timeless (there's no other word to describe it).

To me this may be one of the best Creed fragrances out there, this based on my batch 19R01.

Are you man enough to wear this fragrance?

This fragrance is the epitome of old school masculinity. Though formulated in the late 80's I would still consider it timeless, but that's to say, it is not for everyone. Bois du Portugal is geared towards men of ages 30+, however, if you have the confidence to rock this at a younger age, more power to you. The most common criticism brought on by "fragrance reviewers", is that it has an "old man smell to it". However, I argue those who share this view, may either be of a younger demographic, or simply aren't man enough to appreciate the perfumery behind this work of art. It portrays a high class status, confident, aristocratic persona. You have to possess a certain swagger in order to fully embrace this scent profile. This is a classic fougere/barbershop scent, with citrus being the most predominant accord in the opening, which, then dries down to cedarwood/woody accords. It's made spicy with coriander; however, I couldn't personally detect nutmeg. Performance is excellent, with about 10-12 hours of longevity, and projection that isn't intrusive. Sillage is, however, incredibly powerful for the first hour of application. It is versatile enough to be worn in all seasons, though, I believe it may be cloying in the high heat. Bois du Portugal shines during the colder months. I typically wear this to important meetings, or professional settings, however, I do not think it is restricting enough to be worn solely for the pupose of asserting dominance. I am glad Creed still kept Bois du Portugal around; truly, a bastion of artistry, in a world awash with synthetic scents, and milder, yet, unimpressionable blue fragrances.

Pleasant and conservative men's fragrance...

I do like this one. I find it the type of fragrance which doesn't smell completely "modern" in it's approach. It takes very traditional masculine ingredients here and comes up with a smart, slightly formal and traditional fragrance.

What I get from here immediately is the sandalwood and lavender combination. It's a very good combination and one used very often in male-marketed compositions (most famously in Guerlain - Héritage). In fact, Bois du Portugal is very similar to Héritage (the eau de toilette version).

Having said that, although this is a very well made fragrance, no doubt... I can't help feeling that if you are on a budget you can find this effect for less.. In fact, it reminds me not just of the Guerlain fragrance, but also of a great fragrance by the house of Caron called The Third Man (which I would recommend as this fragrance but with a more daring, floral edge). That fragrance has more flair than this one. I would say that, again, as with all Creed fragrances, if you have the money, go for it. Yet if you want your money to go a little further by mixing it up a bit, then go for the other French houses. As always, a very safe and traditional choice for men from Creed.

Old School

Citrus, soapy, mossy, powdery. The cornerstones of men's perfumery back in the day. Nowadays the men's market is saturated with synthetic cloying ambers and airy aromatics, but through the 60s-80s, the citrusy barbershop fragrances were king. And Bois du Portugal is definitely one of the better ones. To the basic fougere formula of oakmoss, lavender, and bergamot, a green, almost vegetal accord is added that gives it more of a sharp edge rather than the more soapy fragrances in the fougere genre. The drydown is fairly powdery woods, further cementing the old school vibe of this fragrance.

And maybe this isn't the right venue to talk about this, but when I say "old school" I don't mean that people under the age of 30 or 40 should be banned from wearing this fragrance. It just means that 1. If you're over 50 or 60 and wearing this fragrance, people will think you've been wearing the same frag since the 70s/80s, and 2. If you're under 30 wearing this fragrance, you are making a statement, similar to wearing something like a tweed sport coat with elbow pads, or a vividly-colored patterned bowtie. As long as you feel you can pull it off, go for it.

In general I'm not a fan of the soapy/powdery "gentleman" scents, but Bois du Portugal has just enough unique green notes to make it stand out. Not worth a full bottle from me, but I can see this being the perfect scent for someone who wants to make an impression on people.
