Shockingly Refreshing & Clean Chypre

Typically, when I see the word "Gin" in reference to a fragrance I am almost already preparing my exit strategy. This doesn't seem like it would work for the office or daily use, nor would I want to be accused of wreaking of gin, really in any situation. But as I am discovering with the house of Lubin, take these names apply them in an abstract way. Gin Fizz starts out with an initial bracing blast of juniper and zesty lemon that recedes to the middle within the first 10 minutes for me. Next comes that delightful bergamot and mandarin expertly entwined with the light orange blossom. At this stage the fragrance floats about with good sillage of about 1 meter (3.28 ft.) radius for the next 2-3 hours. As Gin Fizz gets to the dry down, it settles into a lovely clean laundry note created jasmine and rose juxtaposed with a touch of earthy iris, white musk, oakmoss and galbanum to give this a density and complexity that surpasses other clean laundry type scents of lesser craftsmanship. The longevity on this is quite astounding after 8 hours it was still quite strong and fresh on my skin, never turning sour or veering off into one single note. This strikes me as a beautiful unisex daytime scent of citrus, herbs and laundry with a pinch of grounding earth for someone who absolutely wants to smell just showered and freshly laundered for 12 hours. This is an energizing and invigorating type of scent with excellent structural complexity and persistence.

Fresh, tidy and bath smell...

Gin Fizz is a perfume that does not work on skin but it smells like shoulders and hair of girls just after shower! It's very skin-related and tidy, slightly soapy, fresh watery, musky and fruity green. I repeat not a skin perfume at all, you only get some feedback from not-so-professional perfume lovers if you apply on a loose shirt. Delicate, feminine, simple luxury or better to say imitated luxury.

Classic aldehydic beauty

Lubin Gin Fizz is a fragrance I’ve smelled before at Perfumology but of which I haven’t previously done a full review. Originally released in 1955 but then re-released in 2009, Gin Fizz is a fresh citrus burst, not too gourmand-like, and not too sweet, so it has a timeless vibe to it in that it does not pivot toward either more modern trend, though it was a forerunner of many fragrances to follow that were explicitly inspired by alcoholic beverages.

Inspired by the cocktail with which it shares its name (as well as the inimitable Grace Kelly), Gin Fizz is fittingly effervescent blend featuring a generous use of aldehydes, a blend of citruses, and mix of florals (most notably, juniper), with white musk and oakmoss in the base. It triggers the classical response in me, “what’s not to like?” along the lines of a Dior Sauvage or Guerlain Shalimar, albeit with more of the play and fresh versatility of the former and a bit less of the gravitas of the latter.

It’s unisex, easy to wear, versatile, and not underwhelming but can be applied liberally without penalty, and it’s one I’ll have to put some more thought into buying. Lubin’s catalogue is quite deep, and Gin Fizz should be at the top of the list for many to try. It is priced at $160/130 for 100/50ml like some of the house’s other offerings, priced well in a designer realm, under the $2/ml mark at the 100ml bottle size.

Overall, it’s an outstanding fragrance that feels classic but still relevant and invigorating, all the same, with all the grace of Grace and a fun aldehydic concoction of a cocktail.

Fresh / Citrusy / Green

It starts with a blast of citrus, mainly lemon, and it has a bit of a soapy vibe with it too, which I think is because of the combo of citrus with vetiver. You might also vaguely get an old-school fragrance vibe from it. Lubin initially launched it in 1955 with the design of great Henry Giboulet. Then in 2009, with the help of talented perfumer Thomas Fontaine, it got reformulated and re-released. It's not dense nor heavy at all. What you would get is fresh, citrusy, and green. The scent is uplifting, and Although it is a women's fragrance, I think it is unisex all the way.
Final verdict:
If you look for something with these characteristics, then go and give it a shot. The longevity is on the average side, considering the scent profile it has. And again, I can't give my opinion on the projection just from testing from a sample.
p.s: As I always say, it is better to test fragrances yourself, and you be the judge of it.

Gin Facsimile

Gin Fizz Cocktail : Mix gin, lemon juice, sugar and crushed ice, shake it up and pour on sparkling water.

Gin Fizz Vintage Perfume : Gin, lemon, a little sweetness and a bitter fizz, a musky-woody baseline.

Doing the smell of a cocktail is just holding a mirror to nature.
This doesn't comment on the smell, or interpret it; it's rudimentary - and more or less a copy.
It seems a shame to put so much effort into such an empty idea.
At least when Roudnitska made Diorissimo - his portrait of muguet which appeared the following year - he had the grace to make it an arabesque.
