The colors and shape of the bottle resemble the cartoon character Olive Oyl (the female character in Popeye comic books). The little black nub on the lid illustrates the typical bun hairstyle of Olive Oyl.

Cheap? Chic!!
Cheap & Chic. Oh, it's definitely Chic! I only wish it was cheap! I would stack up on this crazy looking bottle out of fear I can't find it anymore; because I love this fragrance!

There is something about Moschino perfumes that make them feel and sense like black or purple velvet. You want to touch it, and put it on. Most Moschinos are soft, yet distinct and take your sense of smell on a magical-mystery-ride. This one is no exception.

Opening up with cyclamen and freesia, vanilla and a naughty rose join, bringing a hint of violet. Musk storms in and drags cedar along sprinkling coriander. I think they are having a party and I am the guest of honor : ) The dry down is divine. The silage is 'magnetic' and the longevity is amazing, especially on clothes.

Every time I wear this people wanna "sniff" me. It's odd but I can't blame them. It's a very unusual scent, easily recognizable and attracts attention like a magnet. It is slightly reminiscent of my other beloved Moschino Moschino (so good they named it twice ; ) But this one manages to have and keep its own unique personality.
It's just something you must smell! If you don't know it, ignore the word "Cheap", then go to a shop and spray....Now; do you feel it? Yes! That is love, magic and sex in a funky bottle.

A unique bottle and a unique scent
Cheap & Chic fascinates me with its diversity and unique blend of both spices and fruits combined with a soapy and clean accord.

I will admit that this fragrance will probably not capture you instantaneously, instead it will grow on you and develop into a scent that is truly difficult to resist.

I love how the coriander blends with the peach and citrus notes in the opening. Together they create such an unusual yet classy scent, which is not too spicy nor too bitter or sour.

The heart is pretty, but not overly feminine. I prefer it that way. It has more of a raw, 'don't mess with me' kind of approach, which would really suit a strong and determined woman.

The musk certainly dominates the drydown, however I don't see this as being this fragrance's downfall. It is a rather nice finish to an incredibly alluring scent.

From start to finish it is obvious that this is an Italian fragrance; such class, such distinction. Beautiful from start to finish, I advise anyone to try this scent.

The name is bad
This fragrance is so lovely, but the name is terrible. For one, the word “cheap” doesn’t fit the cost unless you find it used at a garage sale. Second, it dilutes the beauty of the perfume itself, giving it a negative connotation, a sad fate for such a lovely blend.
The bottle itself is interesting. I don’t own one, but I’ve seen photos of it. I have two views on that part. One: some people love quirky bottles and I think that’s fantastic! It’s not my style though. I prefer a beautiful bottle, one that is on the more glamorous side.
It’s almost a “joke” bottle for someone like me, which is why I never bothered with the scent until I received a decant and realized how lovely it is.

The perfume is just so nice, even during dry down. It is floral and becomes creamy, never overbearing, only tiny flowers poking up their cute little heads to say hello to me.

It’s versatile. It can be slept in, worn at work, or on a hot date. It’s not screaming for sex, but your date will want to come closer to sniff you to see where that wonderful, mysterious scent is coming from.

"Olivia" smells good
I remember when this perfume came out in the 90es: with its Olivia*-shaped bottle, it was almost a provocative and surely funny scent! But this one isn't a toy for little girls. Its acchord is rich and well balanced , with unusual aromatic notes giving a particular character to this scent perfect to wear mainly in the cold season.
Unfortunately the sillage isn't so strong and the name too "Cheap and chic" isn't really right for this scent , more particular than "chic" and not so cheap! Anyway, a pleasant fragrance which is a modern classic.

Olive Oyl...
After years of hopeless searching, I was able to track down an original bottle of Cheap & Chic with the original logo from the mid 1990s. In that decade, Moschino was the cutting edge of couture. I had a pair of those jeans! That bold retro modern commercial caught my attention with Olyve Oyle gave me smiles and curiosity. What could this smell like?

As the century turned, Cheap & Chic apparently suffered a bad reformulation and logo alteration. Bad reviews abounded here and elsewhere. The notes seemed odd to begin with, so I passed on this for years. Yet that bottle kept calling me...What would an original one be like?

Today I found one and get to catch a glimpse of the original formula. Yes, it is Avant Gard. It opens with a blast of light florals not unlike Issy Miyake. I was afraid this would head into aquatic territory. Cyclamen, water lily and peony give it a modern powdery character, while the traditional rose/violet/jasmine are in the back seat. This is totally contemporary and fresh. Then the lower notes begin to emerge. There is lots of oakmoss and vetiver here set against a thick resinous dark caramel vanilla/tonka musk with a delicious sandalwood base. I assume the powdery character comes from the buttery iris that is carefully weaved through the entire composition. I get a little coffee here as well...

Cheap & Chic should have been a major player amid the sweet gourmand trend. It is lighter than what came before, yet not weaker. Sweet, powdery projection is big for about the first 20 minutes and then it settles to a delightful skin scent.

This was in the running with Gaultier Femme and Le Male with those campy commercials and break through fragrances. I assume a Popeye tribute was next with a spinach note-deep green with modern notes for men? The wind changed directions and Uomo? came next. Everything became sheer and almost invisible. Maybe the industry was preparing for the sweeping changes to come...

My final verdict is this is a late century marvel that was quickly changed to accommodate the industry regulations. The obvious offending ingredients(oakmoss and sandalwood) were quickly swapped out for nasty acetone plastic fruit notes that the "Cheap" is a self- fulfilling prophecy. Those vulgar flankers are basically Alice the Goon!

A nice, light floral, which does capture my attention. It’s a complex blend, but somehow smells so light and fresh!

Fresh, but not cliché fresh. Floral, but just a little. Original, but not crazy.
Maybe I'll get it...

Floral, without being too banal, but with quite weak sillage.

Typical 90s scent. Fresh, watery flowers, especially freesia, with a nicely creamy base. Too sweet and faint for my taste.

My absolute favorite scent! Lightly spicy, not too overpowering, very unisex-friendly, and in a cool, handy bottle.

It really has something refined about it. Unobtrusively charming & clean. Laundry in spring from the line, still warm from the sun!

Fresh laundry - cool, synthetic clean + dazzling bright. Becomes softly floral on a soft, woody musk base. More cheap than chic. Not for me.
