A Travel Bag Full...
England 1991. On the drive from London Airport, the car is filled with a temptingly spicy fresh scent. The fragrance comes from my host mom. My first great love for a scent has ignited, at first whiff. I still don’t dare to ask with my school English. So I remain silent and enjoy. I get to delight in it throughout the entire Easter holidays, and eventually, I ask what perfume it is. I will never forget that name. Yes, New West. For me, it is connected with my memories of beautiful times in Hastings. The air smells like the West, the scent has an adventurous allure. Hardly back home, I scrape together my savings, march into the nearest perfumery, and test it on my skin. Perfect! I buy it and am happy. It was not my last bottle. Then many other scents came and went, some stayed longer, and eventually, my NW bottle was empty again. And I had to realize with horror that it was no longer available in Germany. Now I am blissfully in possession of a decant - a huge thank you to the forum!

This scent still evokes joy, a youthful fresh spicy spirit, awakening in me a sense of adventure and wanderlust. This fragrance combination of fruit & spice is simply unique. Especially the oceanic notes form a lasting alliance with flowers, fruits, and spicy woods. The scent is rather distinctly cool like a fresh breeze and has nothing warm, soft, or fluffy about it. I smell a lot of melon, which is not sweet and lovely at all here. It seems to carry the aquatic-oceanic components right from the first spray, gathering a hint of rose and jasmine, allying with pine, and together they remain closely linked with cedar in a truly vibrant way for many hours, an entire long day. This is unmistakably New West for me, that’s what defines it.

I think I will feed a piggy bank for this scent, and should I ever discover New West bottles somewhere in a store abroad or elsewhere, then I will buy myself an additional travel bag...

New West? Let's go!
Off to new shores and let’s head west. But what should we do there? After all, a few people still need to stay in the east to turn off the lights later. By the way, did you know under what description Germany will be found in the Chinese Wikipedia in 2080? "A small, quarrelsome mountain folk on the western border of China." I would have liked to write that in Chinese, but I don’t have the corresponding letters on my keyboard.
New West smells like a sparkling mountain spring that becomes a raging river after 1000 km. The opening is sparkling, fresh. A hint of honeydew melon passes by and peaches tumble in the clear water of the brook.
As the brook turns into a river and flows westward, it kisses violets and beautiful garden flowers with clear and clean waters. A rose sends a few petals along.
Saddle up, it's time for the base. Girls, get on the horse and into the saddle. The river becomes a stream. Galloping on the backs of horses with the fine leather scent of the saddles. Hooves gallop through moss. Cedars whip hats off heads. The chypre reveals itself only very late in the base.
New West, a child of its time and a wonderful classic. But neither old-fashioned nor too heavy. I really need to go west again!

And it was summer......
First of all, many thanks to Hasi for the beautiful fragrance memory from the wrapping time of the 90s.

Ah yes, the 80s were over. However, much of it spilled over into the early 90s. The loud, the colorful, the extravagant. One last stand before everything comes to an end.

My mom was a regular customer at a privately run drugstore that carried many unusual fragrances back then (R.I.P. at this point, it has long since floated down the unreformulated "River of No Parfum" -- that is the perfumery, not my mom!! ;-) ). What I actually wanted to say is that at some point she also got a sample of this New West. My sisters and I jumped to the ceiling. This is how the beautiful and rich in Bel Air smell. We were still so young.

Back then, the TV commercial suggested to us the big world - USA (does anyone still remember it?). The infinitely distant Los Angeles, Beverly Hills (Beverly Hills 90210 was also on every young person's lips at that time)! We guarded this sample like the Holy Grail. Just sniffing it. Anyone who touched it was in trouble. Strangely enough, it was empty faster than you could say "Turbo End G*". Then a mini version arrived at our place from somewhere. It was such a strange cloudy, emulsion-like stuff. This one didn't last much longer either.

But now let's finally get to the scent itself. It just smells great to me. Memories come flooding back. Summer 1990. Carefree childhood/youth. It smells like melon, fruits, summer holidays, swimming pools, Tschisi ice cream, and movies like "Now and Then" or "Stand by Me"! I could never warm up to its rather harsh masculine counterpart.

My sister made it. She lives in L.A. while I'm still stuck here :-( Hand me the light bulb from Beverly Hills as a vase for tears.

May I?

My very personal "New West" disaster....
I smelled the fragrance shortly after its release in 1990 at a friend's place and really wanted it.
Since I knew how it smelled and there was nothing more to consider, I bought it without testing. When I applied it, I noticed the misfire:
The fragrance, or rather the composition, belongs to those that do not get along with my body chemistry!
I wondered why it had almost nothing in common with the scent I knew from my friend and how it smelled from the bottle, immediately after application and even afterwards. I could only perceive individual components (along with "soapy" scents) and overall the fragrance smelled like soap on me!! :/
It didn't smell repulsive or disgusting, but simply not like a fragrance that could be called perfume, EDT, or similar, but rather like a pleasantly scented body wash that does not fulfill the purpose of perfume.
This did not change, and I only then learned that there is such a thing as (in)compatibility with one's own body chemistry.
That was frustrating, but also somehow fascinating, because I initially puzzled over how something like this could happen.
I have never experienced anything as extreme as this since.
I then acquired a similar fragrance (I don't remember the name, but it smelled almost exactly the same) and it fit perfectly!
Has anyone else experienced this with New West or another fragrance?
--------------------
Hey Louce!
Excuse me - are you saying that you think I can't distinguish between "perceiving the scent differently" and the result of "chaos from chemical interactions"? :D
And what does "belief in skin chemistry" mean here?
I am continually amazed at how many people seem to have little or no understanding of their own bodies, or those of other living beings!
Instead of "body chemistry," I could have written "the individual biochemical, or (depending on the perspective) physiological, chemical processes, including interactions....." - but I (obviously wrongly) assumed that everyone knows what is meant.

So - every living being is an individual, in terms of phenotype (perceptible and visible) and genotype (not visible, microscopic). This is almost exclusively related to DNA, which naturally never exists in multiples and is also responsible for individual biochemical processes and beyond......blah, blah, blah!
Sarcasm off! ;)
I hope I really don't have to explain this seriously to an adult who is somewhat educated.
Whether the relationships regarding aromas have already been clarified, I do not know - but I will assume so.
I suspect it is the same or a similar effect, as one also refers to as "turning," meaning an imbalance in the interplay of (bio)chemical processes.
While I exclude oxidation - but who knows.....? ;) :D
Such topics are very delicate, but I can't believe there are people who think it's "nonsense."
So, what is the problem with the term "body chemistry"?
What does that have to do with astrology?

Anyway......thanks for your response!

Fresh Breeze in the Hair
I totally loved New West - it smelled so fresh and natural (I say smelled - as it probably hasn't been available here in Germany for a long time). If it is, I would kindly ask for a private message regarding the purchasing address.

The first time I caught a whiff of it was at a friend's house, and I was completely taken with it..., as I hadn't really discovered this fresh type of fragrance before. In the past, there were mainly heavy scents, and when I asked for fresh fragrances in a perfume shop, I was recommended men's scents... no thanks - so, my first beloved aquatic fragrance with notes of melon and not too sweet peach, along with the garden carnation - always a spicy highlight for me, and also moss-leather and musk notes. A great composition - very suitable for everyday wear and always received well. The longevity was surprisingly good despite the freshness - I bought it several times and still miss it today...

I miss you so much, come back! The scent had something so hopeful about it. Aramis would be smart to relaunch the fragrance right now..

Cucumber salad garnished with melon, wonderfully refreshing, a bit woody, not floral, perfect for midsummer, a vintage gem, what a shame...

It's a shame I never bought it back then. I only had a sample. I really loved the melon-cucumber scent!

I unfortunately remember New West as disgusting, like an unventilated changing room where many smells mix (sweat, etc.).

Loved in my late teens, then you were gone for a long time. Now I've found you as a decent imitation. Melon, you're back.

Unfortunately, I only smell soap. A bit musty, like it's been in the guest bathroom for a while. Nothing like the other reviews. Is it supposed to be like this?
