Soothing gold!
Quite another winner, to say the least, among this limited (and discontinued already?) line by Aramis. My favourite still remains Calligraphy Rose, but this Saffron sibling comes right after that. First of all I must point out that honestly, I would have called this “Calligraphy Chamomile & Tagetes”, because that’s precisely what I get out of this for the first couple of hours. An extremely pleasant, bracing and calming blend of resinous, honeyed floral notes with a peculiar sort of warm, “edible”, gently balsamic pollen-infused earthy-herbal feel with a slight sort of waxy-citric aftertaste – which is more or less what I refer to as “chamomile” (say, a steamy cup of honeyed, bergamot/rose-infused chamomile). There is saffron, too, but to me it acts more as a subtle enhancement of the spicier, more aromatic side of the blend. It’s surely not the most prominent note for me, but it’s there.

The color of the juice and the label reflect the smell quite well: all that gold, yellow and ochre – that’s how Calligraphy Saffron smells, in “synesthetic” terms. It’s exotic, elegant, soothing and almost “meditative” with its sense of golden, peaceful floral-resinous warmth, just with the right balance of thickness and dryness – the dryness mostly coming from a discreet, austere and kind of smoky accord of light leather and vetiver providing a thin, yet quite perceivable and perfectly fit “dark” and dry base tinged with a whiff of rose powder. All works just perfect: a simple composition, rich in depth more than notes, with seemingly great quality and a really desirable presence on skin – it’s long-lasting, not overly sweet (actually, considering the notes, it’s barely sweet), pleasantly linear with a slow transition towards a drier, smokier, unexpectedly more balsamic woody-resinous-leathery scent, with the right projection (more on the discreet side). If I had to mention a flaw, it would be a slightly excessive sense of restraint; personally, I would have wished something a bit more “opulent”. It’s a rich scent, but a bit too tamed down to express its richness at its best. But however, it’s great. I didn’t try the black-label “original” Calligraphy scent, but both Rose and Saffron are definitely two really great pieces of Oriental perfumery which I wouldn’t have expected from Aramis. Totally worthy the price.

Honeyed Saffron...
Perfume Calligraphy Saffron goes on with a thick, near-resinous floral marigold with supporting slightly powdery rose and traces of leathery saffron spice. As the composition moves to its early heart the marigold vacates as the saffron builds intensity adding in a moderately sweet supporting honey accord, with the fine powdery rose growing into co-star with the saffron. Moving through the heart phase, an underlying modestly smoky woody vetiver joins the primary honeyed saffron and rose accord, adding a bit of dryness. During the late dry-down the composition turns relatively dry, losing its honeyed sweetness as remnants of the saffron and rose now join leathery styrax through the finish. Projection is very good to excellent and longevity very good at 10-11 hours on skin.

Perfume Calligraphy Saffron immediately impresses with its excellent early use of marigold. The marigold is difficult to describe, but it has a thick, slightly boozy floral aspect to it that is a perfect match for the saffron. Speaking of the saffron, it is paired with a honey-like accord that never gets too sweet, but adds a bit of an unexpected spin to the presentation one might not expect, countering the saffron's slightly dry leathery nature. The rose used primarily in the mid-section of the composition is almost as prominent as the saffron, showing off its relatively airy, powdery facets. All-in-all the saffron, honey and rose combination surprisingly works very well, leading to the relatively stark dry-down. After having been previously impressed with the Perfume Calligraphy Rose flanker, this Saffron flanker offering near-equally impresses. The bottom line is Perfume Calligraphy Saffron continues to prove that while rare, some flankers can smell better than the compositions they were based off of, earning a "very good" to "Excellent" 3.5 to 4 stars out of 5 rating and a solid recommendation.

Incredibly Golden!
My personal favourite among the Calligraphy line. I really liked Calligraphy Rose, but this is something else! Pure Gold. Extremely pleasant soft ambery-floral, with a warm pollen-esque feel throughout. Pointless for me to review it in detail - Colin Maillard has done a wonderful job of that, as always.

Calligraphy Rose was beautiful and rich, but a little on the louder side for me. But here the whole thing is very restrained, while still being as rich and incredibly golden. Just a well-mannered sibling of the same blue-blooded lineage . It's a very personal perfume - as others have mentioned, something for close encounters. Hats off to Estee Lauder for releasing something this "niche" at a really honest (designer) price. (People need some perspective.)

Anyways, now that this line has been discontinued, grab these if you get a chance before they disappear for good.

From Evening to Night
Marigold. Oh wow. It offers an incredibly strong scent, at least the classic varieties. And the downright stinking marigold actually opens here, barely shedding a thin saffron veil shortly after spraying. However, no one can claim they weren't warned. The bergamot doesn't stand a chance. Yet, even within the first hour, the rose demands its due. Muted, subdued, elegantly it presents itself, as saffron now plays the role of the great equalizer. It takes the sharpness away from the marigold.

These three components gradually blend into a fruity-floral-herbaceous scent impression over the course of the second and third hour, hiding a chasm of power behind its outward calm. It has considerable potential energy, coming at you with a mossy weight that requires a certain presence from the wearer - I can definitely imagine the scent better on women.

But despite its muscle, Calligraphy Saffron is never loud; the sillage remains contained. A more dignified rose is hardly imaginable. If the scent of a rose could reliably indicate its color, it would be a deep dark red, almost black.

In the second half, the fragrance reveals its most beautiful side for me: The previous players, along with a resinous note, nearly merge into a sweet, incense-like, and later slightly coumarin-tinged allure, underpinned by a herbaceous-floral quality. This resembles a strong, spicy honey note (sic!) and it dramatically changes the character of the fragrance. Although still powerful, and with its head held high, it now feels less aloof. On the contrary, it has become seductive, but in an extraordinarily sophisticated way. Anyone seduced by the Saffron woman has undoubtedly had to prove their worthiness first.

I prefer the saffron variant to the Calligraphy in "pure." I don't perceive such distinct hints of other scents (which may be due to a lack of experience), and nothing strikes me in the sense of "That smells like..." Not at all in the second part; I had not encountered such a synthesis before. Moreover, saffron is overall not so cumbersome yet equally demanding, thanks to the assertive use of marigold.

Conclusion: A great fragrance for the lady who desires an - qualitatively, not quantitatively - extroverted appearance at a long, elegant evening event. An evening event that could very well transition into a very private night.

I thank Angelliese for the sample.

The Rose-Fingered One
Titan Hyperion, as it is said by Homer and Hesiod, had three children. First was Helios, the sun god and his only son, who drove across the sky in a chariot drawn by fire horses. Second was Selene, his sister and goddess of the moon, who was called the Veiled One - and sometimes 'Phoebe', meaning 'the Shining One', although this epithet was also given to other goddesses. Finally, the third was Eos, goddess of the dawn, known to the Romans as Aurora and also called 'Erigeneia', 'the Early Awakening One'. Homer describes her as a figure full of grace and beauty - 'rose-fingered' and in saffron-colored garments.

Eos, the Rose-Fingered One - what a beautiful analogy to Calligraphy Saffron, one of Aramis' tributes to the art of the Orient, specifically dedicated to saffron. Saffron - derived from the flower stigmas of a species of crocus and presumably the most precious spice in the world - possesses a distinctive aroma that is both radiant and, in a fine and almost graceful manner, herbaceous and bitter. Together with the rose and a bright, spicy accord attributed to Tagetes (I doubt I could have identified the latter - but once you know, you recognize it), it gives this extraordinary fragrance a luminous, radiant, truly 'awakening' character. Calligraphy Saffron is a very present scent - like the bright sound of a silver trumpet - that surrounds its sweetness with something alert, distinctly outlined, which only after a while settles down to a gentle base of warmth (tonka and something tremblingly resinous) - tender and soft like a luminous and quiet rain.

Conclusion: Eos, the rose-fingered goddess of dawn, rode with her two horses (named Phaeton and Lampos - both meaning 'shining' or 'bright') as the vanguard of her brother across the sky. Just like her, this is a fragrance of delicate light and radiance - playful and full of brightness and urgency, present and rose-fingered-saffron-beautiful for both a woman and a man.

Basically, it's the thousandth saffron-rose blend, but it gains a wonderful creaminess from vetiver! Pleasant to wear!

I love it. The honey scent I've been looking for, without (indicated) honey. Spicy, deep, warm. Honey cookies (Pluto) describes it best.
