An Ode To The Great Powerhouse 80s From A Release Out Of The 90s...
Balenciaga pour Homme opens with an aromatic lavender, carnation and rose floral accord with supporting green oakmoss rising all the way from the base. As the composition enters its early heart the floral trio and oakmoss remain, now joined by a very strong patchouli, cinnamon and leathery styrax starring trio with the composition turning slightly sweet, primarily derived from supporting honey and tonka bean. During the late dry-down the floral aspects and patchouli gradually dissipate as creamy, slightly sweet sandalwood joins supporting slightly powdery mild vanilla from the base, with traces of the earlier cinnamon remaining in additional support through the finish. Projection is outstanding and longevity average at 7-8 hours on skin.

Balenciaga pour Homme is a powerhouse lover's dream come true. It has all the hallmarks of the great 80s compositions (though it was actually released in 1990). Powerful projection, check, strong patchouli and spice-laden floral heart, check, plenty of oakmoss, check... The list goes on and on. I absolutely adore the stuff, finding it one of the best compositions I have sniffed from the 90s. Despite its genuine powerhouse credentials, somehow the late dry-down pulls in the reigns as the composition becomes much more controlled and tame. That said, even the more subdued late sandalwood and spiced vanilla driven dry-down, while probably my least favorite aspect of the composition is amazing in its own right. The bottom line is the sadly discontinued but still available on the aftermarket for about $1 per ml Balenciaga pour Homme is a masterpiece caliber composition by the great Gerard Anthony that demands any powerhouse lover's attention, earning a 4.5 star out of 5 rating and an extremely strong recommendation.

A unique scent
Ever since The Perfume Guy gave BPH a rave review in the early days of Covid, unsold stock from the 90s became more and more scarce and inevitably prices soared. I normally try before I buy, but I wasn't willing to spend €40 for a 5ml sample. I let FOMO be my guide and bit the bullet. Did this fragrance from my favourite perfumer live up to these sky high expectations?

I'm not disappointed. It is indeed a unique scent. It's not easy for me to pick out the individual notes in this, but to me it's primarily a spicy ambery cinnamon and dirty patchouli, with an animalic tone throughout. Hard to compare it to another frag, but I'll say that its overall vibe is not a million miles away from that of Puig Sybaris. As expensive as it has become, BPH still blows nearly all current niche releases out of the water. I just wish I'd acquired it before prices got so high.

Performance and longevity are outstanding.

Masculinity Level: Gene Hackman in Absolute Power.

Wild and well mannered
Launched a decade after Kouros and Antaeus, BPH (1990) was by all accounts an anachronism. Gérard Anthony, the nose behind Azzaro Pour Homme (1978) was called in to compose this sultry beast. (There’s something about the misfits of that late-80s-early-90s era of masculine perfumery that I love: they swam upriver while everyone else was coasting downstream. Le 3e Homme, Bel Ami, Zino, Insensé, BPH.)

This stuff is redolent of the hypersexual, hairy chested, pill-popping, night-clubbing, sweat soaked, recklessly hedonistic, powerhouse genre… and yet it comes off much more refined and rounded than, say, an Antaeus or a Kouros. “Manly”, complex, and opulent, it seems to straddle genres (is it a fougère, a chypre, or an “oriental”? The answer is yes).

Bergamot, thyme, cinnamon, coriander, galbanum, pepper, laurels up top. Depth is provided by a megadose of earthy, woody aromatics in the shape of patchouli, sandalwood, and cedar. All of this is subtended by real oakmoss, a heady amber, bourbon vanilla, a silky musk, and the most pleasant honey accord I’ve come across.

It is unlisted, but BPH is reputed to have been the first Western perfume to use oud. It’s only a smidge, but it provides the animalic facet that the profile would’ve lacked for not using castoreum or civet. BPH is warm, bitter, bracing, sweet, and funky in equal measures, somehow giving both animal sultriness and quasi-gourmand pleasantness. The effect is narcotic. A beauty.

Amber fougere of the yester year which would be relevant even today
Very barbershopy aromatic opening. The notes i get the most are bayleaf, thyme, oregano and cinnamon. Goes into sweet animalic pissed honey mixed with some smoke and woods. Drydown is super sweet and addictive. Patchouli is a big big thing of this fragrance, seems it connects all together, slight leathery touch on the drydown as well.

Smells like nothing on the market. Lasts for a long time and projects a lot.

Seen it selling for around 300€ for the full bottle, just grab it. Better than 95% things on the market nowadays.

Harmonious Balance in Piglet Pink
Since there are unfortunately no comments yet on this exceptionally appealing fragrance, I will give it a try.

However, I should note that my intense time with Balenciaga pour Homme was a few decades ago, and I unfortunately no longer possess a single drop.

Even my mini bottle, which you can see at the bottom here, has been completely used up. Only a few scent molecules are still perceptible, so I can only recall the former contents fragmentarily.

If I'm not mistaken, my mother brought it back for me from some duty-free shop in the early 90s. There was also an advertising campaign featuring a stylish guy in a silver-gray suit in a rocky landscape by the sea. However, I never consciously saw Balenciaga pour Homme in German stores.

The pale pink Art Deco bottle with the large jade-inspired cap is truly unique. I have never seen a fragrance, let alone an Eau de Toilette for men, so boldly presented. Perhaps it was a bit too daring, but in my opinion, it very well reflects the aura of its contents.

The scent flowed into my nose silky smooth and sweetly fresh. The top note is no longer very present for me, but the heart note managed to play very pleasantly with jasmine and lily of the valley, only marginally touched by honey. In my memory, there was also a bit of rose, but according to the pyramid, I seem to have been mistaken.

Patchouli and sandalwood perfectly rounded off this olfactory harmony. Simply beautifully inviting.

At times, it reminded me very strongly of Ted Lapidus pour Homme, with which it shares at least some ingredients. However, Balenciaga pour Homme seemed a bit brighter and softer.

Back then, I certainly enjoyed wearing it a lot. However, in my younger years, I also had a preference for sweeter fragrances, which I am now quite skeptical about. Whether I would still wear it proudly today, I do not know, but it certainly gave me some unforgettable sweet moments - and for that reason, Balenciaga pour Homme should not be forgotten.

One of those no one cannot regret its discontinuation: full bodied, amazing blend impossible to replace, unique.

One of the best rarities out there. A warm spicy frag, dominated by a characteristic dirty patchouli and honey accord. Great!

Overall a beautiful scent. Luckily, it’s less sweet than the notes suggest. Warmth and freshness carried by the lily of the valley.

Starts balsamic and resinous. Later, honey and sandalwood join in. Old, solid school: everything according to the laws of perfumery.

Balenciaga smells expensive and high-quality. A business scent from the 90s. Strong sillage and very long-lasting. A dream fragrance for me!

Starts balsamic, gentle - the little brother of "Jules" by Dior. Unfortunately becomes a bit overpowering. Be careful with the dosage.
