Baleniciaga At Its Best...
*This is a review of the original formula vintage Quadrille EdT.

Quadrille (vintage) opens with a nose tingling blast of deep, boozy plum wine with significant musk and mossy green oakmoss support. Moving to the early heart the boozy plum recedes to a supporting role, leaving the animalic musk and mossy green oakmoss as co-stars with hints of dulled peach fruit and cardamom spice. As the composition moves further through its mid-section, the musk fades as the oakmoss switches gear, now featuring its powdery facet while maintaining some of its prior mossy green nature. During the late dry-down the composition stays linear with the gentle powdery oakmoss remaining almost through the finish, as hints of earlier obscured jasmine show up towards the end of the composition's development. Projection is excellent, as is longevity at well over 12 hours on skin.

Balenciaga has a fine history of releasing outstanding compositions, and vintage Quadrille shows off what the house can do at its best. The opening boozy plum wine assault is extremely intense and I loved every minute of it. Adding to the opening barrage is the musky oakmoss that melds perfectly with the boozy plum, amplifying its impact and depth, while ratcheting up the brilliance factor exponentially. The composition then impressively shifts gears from its boozy open to a more green powdery oakmoss led accord with the animalic musk playing co-star. I am not a huge powder fan, but the powder level never gets out of hand, and the mossy green facet of the oakmoss somehow holds things together throughout. The last surprise well after the composition was little more than a skin scent was when a fine, slightly sweet jasmine emerged right at the end of the composition's life cycle, and it is one of the best jasmine notes I have ever sniffed. How the jasmine was hidden for most of the development is a mystery, but smelling it at the end made for a very fine finish indeed. Quadrille (vintage) is the kind of composition that makes one really long for the "good old days" where IFRA regulations and focus group testing weren't the rage. Yes, it smells like it is from another age, but by saying that I mean it with the highest respect and compliment. They just don't make 'em like they used to. The bottom line is Quadrille (vintage) checks off all the boxes as to what makes a perfume classic and great, earning a "near masterpiece" rating of 4.5 stars out of 5 and a strong recommendation to vintage perfume lovers of either gender.

You have left us...
...I stand at the open grave and cry into my floral handkerchief. They have laid you out, and no one has come to give you a proper eulogy. Your creator has long crossed the Jordan and is either turning in his own grave or floating above us. He sits on cloud 1955 in a white robe, plucking at his harp and humming the Chypre song.
When you were born, he bestowed upon you a few fruits. Fresh, almost unripe plums that must be pressed. There are no maggots inside. A velvety peach that scratches at the lips and a large lemon. Which top and heart note dominates.

It will be briefly gloomy. But flying in from the clouds are cloves. Cinnamon sticks are wedged between the strings and never become dominant (smell fresh cinnamon, nothing sweet and nothing to do with Christmas).
The wonderful floral note that always floats behind cloud 1955 prevents Quadrille from becoming too creaky.

In a mild mood, the nameless nose sought a slightly dull-creamy amber on the beach. The whales hadn’t yet given it up voluntarily back then. Later, only what they had expelled near the shore was collected. But there was so much depth in fragrances, and dark, seductive musk was not spared either.

But I bet that from heaven, cedar branches, slightly charred, are waving.

We can only close the coffin when nothing more flows out of here, but it flows and smells. Quadrille did not want to die!

From cloud 1955 comes an Amen and a final word: Be glad that they did not reformulate, castrate, and reinterpret him...
Rest in peace!

The Secrets of Senior Balenciaga
The fashion designer Balenciaga was said to be a man shrouded in mystery even during his lifetime.
He was reportedly hardly ever seen in public, wanted his fashion to be handcrafted, and secretly, other well-known designers today were said to have "gone to school" with him.
So mysterious are "his" fragrances, especially the old ones.
Thanks to a decant from a dear "Parfumo" member, I have the pleasure of testing this beautiful scent. This Quadrille is not just a single figure but a deeply moving Chypre dance.
The subtly fruity opening reminds me of an orchard at the time of fruit ripening, including the grassy ground on which the trees stand.
Then follows a dark blue floral spiciness, certainly involving roses (roses and carnations together in a fragrance make it midnight blue for me), and iris is likely involved as well.
This mystical impression lingers for a long time and is even intensified when the base notes begin to peek through.
Mossy woodiness flows like balm into the blue spice, coloring the scent dark turquoise with autumn leaf-brown speckles, and patchouli aromas reminiscent of damp, fragrant earth change the tone to deep violet.
And if I were to transform the scent into fabric, it would be one of Balenciaga's beautiful fashion creations,
a dark blue mousseline dress with violet and turquoise velvet accents. Mysteriously shimmering and enigmatic. High-necked, yet allowing deep insights into the imagination.....

Refinement and Timeless Elegance
As far as I know, Quadrille is the third Balenciaga fragrance after Le Dix and La Fuite des Heures.

I still vividly remember how infatuated my mother was with this perfume - and still is. She still treasures a small remnant from earlier times like a treasure in her linen closet. Even though the scent is still fresh in my memory, I was allowed to sneak a little bit for a test.

And … wow! Even after more than 15 years, Quadrille still smells exactly as I remembered: It starts with a fresh, very distinctive accord of lemon and plum reminiscent of licorice, and a little later I can also smell peach. The mixture seamlessly transitions into an anise-like heart note of cardamom and clove, until jasmine makes a modest appearance. The whole composition rests on a balanced base of amber and musk. The scent progression is like something out of a storybook and lasts for several hours. The drydown is rosy and subtly sweet, reminding me of expensive English soap.

Like some other fruity chypres, Quadrille perfectly harmonizes female and male fragrance components. Dryness and sweetness, aromatic spice, fruitiness and floral notes, severity and sensuality are in perfect balance.

What I find so remarkable about Quadrille is the refinement with which this fragrance was composed. Although it was actually designed for women, it does not contain any distinctly feminine scent characteristics, which makes it - when applied more sparingly - a fragrance that can also be worn by men.

Plum, cloves, oakmoss and amber. Sort of a cleaner Femme by Rochas. Warm and spicy on skin, good for vintage spicy chypre lovers as myself

When the quadrille breaks through the noise,
its scent lets you breathe deeper,
your heart becomes calm
and wide,
then it's clear: Chypre time.

Old-fashioned in a good way, fruity, floral - wonderfully spiced.
Quadrille dances in a Three-Weather-Taffeta style - almost indestructible
Beautiful Chypre

Clearly brighter and more Chypre-oriented than the Extrait, spicier and less floral. Musk in the base has animalistic nuances.

Plays in the Mitsouko league. A beautiful spicy soft chypre with a soapy, woody opening and a fine floral timbre.

It may seem "old," but I still find it modern! A wonderful Chypre! Reminds me of my "Madrigal" by Molinard!

Early 70s. Diane Keaton wears suede boots and eats honey bread on set.
That's what Quadrille smells like - a fantastic vintage treasure.
