Synthetic green life
Fascinated by the forerunner of this scent, "Florabotanica", which is a green, synthetical, herbal-spicy mainstream-scent, I was curious to try "Rosabotanica". It's obvious that it was inspired by Balenciaga's first "botanical" creation from 2012. Spicy notes (cardamon, pink pepper) and many other synthetic versions of ingredients which evoke the "green family" have been tipped into the bottle of this new scent. Some fiddling and balancing with a dose of rose, fig leave, grapefruit and petitgrain - and a new Balenciaga fragrance is ready. In spite of the inclusion of rose, this scent remains cold, somewhat "architectural". And the star of the aromachemical show is the synthetic woody drydown which lasts a very long time and which cools things down even more. If you are a sucker for green fragrances with a light floral touch, give "Rosabotanica" a try, but be aware of the fact that in spite of its name, it smells very artificial.

Good, but not a knockout
What I like about Rosabotanica and Florabotanica are their pairings of a dominant floral with some sort of leaf. With Florabotanica it's carnation and caladium leaf. Here's it's rose and fig leaf. Both also benefit from their other less common notes, and a quite nice vetiver. Yet, for me, Rosabotanica is an also-ran, not as good as several other rose fragrances I've encountered. Florabotanica, OTOH, is a knockout. I snapped it up. They were giving away minis of Rosabotanica and now that I've sniffed it, I know why. It's interesting rather than compelling. Nice, but not memorable. They gave me a hand cream and a purse vial, too. Oversell, because it's not selling is my guess.

At Least It's Better Than Florabotanica
Rosabotanica strikes me as "upbeat". A fragrance
only a woman of confidence can wear without
conflict. Rosabotanica is sexy, daring and
audacious. Unlike the obnoxious, green, horrid
Florabotanica. For some reason, I'm vaguely
reminded of Kilian's Back To Black Aphrodisiac.
Considerably because I keep thinking I'm smelling
honey. Balenciaga's "experimental rose" is the key
note, but it is the hyacinth which gives it body.
Rosabotanica is better figured with more structure.
Dare to be different and turn heads with Rosabotanica.

I can understand why many are disappointed with this fragrance, but Balenciaga is now distributed by Coty Prestige. Although you can't expect anything luxury grade from this company, Rosabotanica isn't nearly as "mass market" as Philosophy or the Vera Wang Princess line.

Green and Elegant
I absolutely love this. On me it's a rosebud that is just beginning to open, soft rose with the greeness of the leaves and stem clinging to it. It gets a bit more spicy as it dries down, but not in an overpowering way. The longevity is good, sillage is soft. It's green and elegant and by far the best of the many rose fragrances I've tried. The bottle is stunning too!

I Never Promised You a Rose Garden
I Never Promised You a Rose Garden

"I know a garden pretty and fine,
There blooms a red little rose;
And around it is a hedge,
Green in summer, brown in winter.

And whoever wants to pick the rose,
Must come silently, must come still;
Must come in the dusky night,
When neither moon nor star is awake.

I wanted to trust my luck,
Climbed secretly over the garden fence;
The red little rose was bent,
Another had picked it.

The little garden is now bare and empty,
The red little rose no longer blooms;
Sorrowfully I must stand from afar
And look at the rose garden."

H. Löns

Already from the name of this perfume, the scent "Rosabotanica," created by Balenciaga in 2013, is about the theme of "rose." This is even more evident when reading the promotional announcement: "Rosabotanica - the enchanted rose. Balenciaga enchants with a symphony of fragrance notes based on a modern accord of fresh, elegant roses that develops into a fiery, glamorous character: Spicy rose is enveloped by delicate citrus drops and refined by green fig leaves and vetiver." One can hope not to hear: "I never promised you a rose garden!" - corresponding to the title of the American film by director Anthony Page from 1977. The film is based on the autobiographical novel of the same name by Joanne Greenberg. It depicts a young woman suffering from schizophrenia and the arduous struggle for healing. A doctor gently helps her improve her condition.

But back to our fragrance: Our walk through the promised rose garden begins softly fruity-floral. I can faintly sense a green fig scent. It is just a delicate hint of a fig that reaches us. I think of the shy, reserved fig aroma from Christine Nagel's "Figuier Eden," created in 2012 for the "Armani Privé" line. There, too, we are only enveloped by a gentle hint of a delicate fig. As it should be for a paradise; and probably also for a rose garden, which is at most lined with gnarled fig trees. This garden is certainly not in Amalfi, as the "Fico di Amalfi," released by Acqua di Parma in the "Blu Mediterraneo" line in 2006, comes across as somewhat broader-shouldered. Moreover, our fig here is a floral-bitter specimen. Accompanying it is a hyacinth. This noticeable note of bitter orange I attribute to the Petitgrain listed in the fragrance pyramid.
In the heart note, we finally get our promised rose garden. In the form of a stately rose. In my perception, it is a long-stemmed pink rose. Confident - and not just a hint. Summery and cheerful. In no way dark and mysterious. No, our upright pink rose here wants to guide us carefree and joyfully through spring and summer. It wants to sweeten our day in pleasantly warm temperatures. And it certainly does not want to be a dark-mysterious companion for the oriental moments of 1001 nights. No, our pink rose wants to enjoy life (with us!) and not spend its existence (possibly melancholically) on flying carpets battling villains armed with curved sabers. But it is not easy for this (long-stemmed) pink rose that awaits us here. It is spiced: I spontaneously perceive a bit of pepper. But just a pinch of it. Just enough for our "fair-weather rose" to gain some depth. And for refreshment, there's a bit of citrus on top: A small grapefruit has also sneaked into our sun-drenched rose garden. But: The main role is still played by our summery rose.
In the base, our rose garden gently fades out with noble woods. Very restrained, very soft. The rose is now delicately underlaid by these. Warming amber and spicy patchouli kindly remind us that our walk in the rose garden is now slowly coming to an end. The sun is setting. The night is falling. And after a dark night, a new day begins in our rose garden.
Promised.

A scent like a fairy tale forest: forest spirits, gnomes & fairies, fragrant rose vines, gnarled wood, bitter herbs, light & shadow. I love it!

A rose cut from an old chypre. Muted, slightly pale, a bit waxy. It carries green notes, aldehydes, spice, and fruit.

Chilled, green-blue rose beauty... tied with herb-infused cotton lace, photographed with a misted lens. Unique.

If the rose shouldn't be too sweet and can have a bit of green instead.
Quieter than Flora but also special & beautiful

A honeyed rose accompanied by green-bitter citrus, woods & cardamom, has freshness & depth at the same time. Somewhat autumnal.

Very herbal and bitter. Rose, grapefruit, and a hint of anise (for me).
The scent is completely unsweet and a bit sour. I like it.

Fresh and cheeky little grapefruit in a rose dress with delicate wood accents. Unique - but by no means demure! Great!

strange-herbaceous rose
somehow shallow, like after a summer rain
humid, urinous
not nearly as great as my favorite Florabotanica

At first herbal, peppery, then a gentle rose that lasts a long time. After Florabotanica, another beautiful floral scent that isn't old-fashioned.
