Spicy woody greatness
Hi Hang Club deserves a bit more recognition but in any even it still takes somewhat of a backseat to the original Ho Hang by Balenciaga of years earlier. This output was launched in 1987 and during that time there were tons of woody masculine colognes out there and one was better than the other. I'll say that this one was lost in the shuffle. However I brought this spicy beauty into my extensive collection a few months back and I really like how the spices and woods lay on the skin. Not for eternity though because the performance is decent but not fantastic as told. Whatever it's a very nice smooth concoction Of woods spices and citruses with some slight animalics thrown in. It's hard to locate a fragrance of this nature nowadays unless you go the niche route. That said I truly miss the old days when fragrances had character and personality and most of all, BALLS! Ho Hang club EDT has that and more. :)

The Old School Club...
Ho Hang Club goes on with an earthy patchouli, floral carnation and orange clay-like coriander spice starring trio, as green oakmoss rising from the base lends early support. As the composition reaches its early heart the oakmoss turns slightly more assertive, mixing with additional leathery styrax and dull rose, also joining the earlier carnation and coriander co-stars. During the late dry-down the composition turns quite woody, as cedar melds with the floral remnants now coupling with relatively dry, quite potent amber from the base through the finish. Projection is above average and longevity very good to excellent at 10-12 hours on skin.

Ho Hang Club is a tough composition to completely pin down. The floral-laced patchouli open is quite 80s powerhouse-like in its implementation and quite aggressive. Shortly after though, things go a different direction than one might expect as the coriander spice adds a clay-like undertone to the composition, and when the dull rose shows up, it gives off a very good impression of rosewood. Rosewood is not my favorite smelling wood by far and it can come off smelling a bit dated and mundane at times; but in Ho Hang Club the patchouli hanging around past the open livens up the rosewood a bit with its slightly sharp earthy nature, giving it some sparkle. The cedar-driven woody amber dry-down is probably the least interesting part of the composition, but the way it sneaks up on you as the coriander recedes enough to let it shine through is quite the surprise and keeps things interesting through the end. The bottom line is the discontinued but still relatively inexpensive Ho Hang Club at under $0.50 per ml is a fine but less than perfect outing for Balenciaga, earning a "very good" 3.5 star out of 5 rating and a solid recommendation to old school composition lovers (like me).

Ambivalent, but still worth a try
HoHang Club was a well-intentioned attempt in the mid-80s to connect with the then very popular leather fragrances. Unfortunately, it lacked that crucial something in this chaotic mix....

The scent was bursting with ingredients, yet it lacked harmonious balance. The pyramid in the H+R Fragrance Atlas from 1989 describes it as follows:
Top notes: Bergamot, Lemon, Coriander, Mugwort, Fruit Accord, Basil
Heart notes: Thyme, Cardamom, Cypress, Rose, Iris, Jasmine, Juniper, Clove, Cananga, Geranium
Base notes: Leather, Amber, Patchouli, Cedarwood, Frankincense, Moss, Musk, Styrax

At first, it reminded me of the great class of Chanel's Antaeus or Revillon's French Line, but as the scent developed, it took on something indefinable... one gets the impression that the perfumer was trying to win a contest for mixing the most raw materials in a fragrance without really optimizing and balancing them... It's a pity, really, as Ho Hang (without Club) was quite a successful little fragrance.

This nice but I'm wondering about the original Ho Hang from 1972.

Powerhouse scent that doesn't quite shine as a flanker of Ho Hang, as it lacks the fine, subtle presence of its brother.
