Balenciaga Beauty

This has a bit of everything going on. Take a large pot and mix in dried fruits, rum, coconut, caramel, honey, etc. In fact anything you can lay your hands on. What do you get? An olfactory mess? Quite the contrary! This is warm, elegant and sophisticated. In fact, I think it's to die for and Balenciaga should resurrect this wonder. Immediately.

A Random Note Generator?

When I first wore TALISMAN, with no knowledge of the notes, I was wondering why I kept smelling wafts here of leather, there of honey, here again of caramel, there a touch of booziness, here--could it be coconut?... Yes, all of this and more: the list went on and on. Later it all became clear with the benefit of the note pyramid.

TALISMAN is a beautiful light oriental fragrance with abiding slightly sweet vanilla patchouli and a modicum of just about everything else under the sun thrown in to induce these delightful tiny wafts of variety. Rather than having a well-defined development trajectory, TALISMAN, on my skin, seems to operate like a random note generator. Imagine those ping-pong tossing machines that mix the numbered balls using air, only here the notes are popping up instead.

Yet the composition really is light and likeable and not at all overwhelming. I actually am a bit disappointed with the longevity, to be honest, but TALISMAN is appealing enough that I could see myself spraying it on over and over again just to be able to catch some more of these nice wafts. I'd like to try this creation at perfume strength, if available...

winter warmth

Talisman is exactly what I need to get me through some bitter cold winter days. It's bold without being obnoxious; the strong davana note is sensuous but doesn't cross over into being boozy or gourmand. (Reading the notes, you would think it smells like fruit soup or liqueur, but it doesn't.) Another Balenciaga masterpiece!(010510)

C’est ne pas un pipe

This is not an ordinary perfume. Like Magritte’s painting of a pipe. Which was not a pipe but a painting. Having spent many hours with Talisman I am still not sure, if it belongs in the category of perfumes. Of course it is a perfume, you would say. I am not totally convinced yet. To me it is so much more than a perfume. Especially when it has been around for about an hour. Then it turns itself into a masterpiece. Or a magic potion.
The beginning is dry and soapy, but there are very few notes to smell. The first time I met Talisman I thought I had met one more of the nice, white ladies like Gres Cabochard or Ivoire de Balmain. I love both. Therefore I lifted my eyebrows when Talisman started to develop into a spicy, floral woody fragrance with power and warmth, that is really extraordinary. I know that Balenciaga have other powerful and magnificent fragrances in their catalogue, but Talisman belongs on the VIP list with Quadrille, Le dix, Florabotanica and Rumba. The journey is unlike anything they make today. It is as watching and smelling a flower to open up and become the most divine of all creations. The nose behind it is Dominique Preyssas. I looked through the directory, but Talisman is the only of his creations that I know apart from Jaguar for Men, which is not a fragrance that has impressed me.
Do try it - just once.

Honey Fruits and Erotic Beasts

Do I need to mention that the bottle is a delight to hold? Satin-finished, with "Mae West" curves, you hardly want to put it down... the golden, ribbed collar is topped with a transparent, deep purple cap shaped like pleated chiffon.
Couture, indeed.

And then the scent - ripe, juicy, lush with honey-drenched fruits, dried fruits. The rum is modest in the background, not coming across as "spirity." A fine note develops after the jam overture, osmanthus of the finest kind. Hmmm! As noble as fine fabric, gliding, caressing, melting on the skin.
This feminine-elegant note lingers for a long time, enveloping the wearer like a garment. The radiance of this fragrance is high, the EdP fills the room, and my husband, about 15m away, mumbled something about: “...I’d like to have plum compote with crumble again!”... obviously inspired by the fruity-sweet "little compote" in my bottle.

When the fruit fades, the spring blossoms remain, settling into honey and fruit juice. This mixture is delicious and by no means too sweet or too overpowering. Creamy and benevolent, this scent adapts to the occasion.

Somewhere behind the orgy of flowers and fruits lurk erotic beasts, even if not mentioned in the pyramid. I suspect a lustful musk creature and a quarrelsome civet cat tussling over the fruit scraps. The base is close to the skin and radiant, warm and seductive, teasing and alluring.

A fragrance that is characteristic of the 90s - but unfortunately was not allowed into the new century, even though it is more "gourmand" than many of the waters today, which have little to offer aside from extensive stickiness and artificial fruit aroma. I am thrilled - like an animal - about my coveted bottle!
