The Absolute "Value" Bomb
I just had to visit that amazing perfume store on Zeil in Frankfurt again, with pretty much everything you can imagine in well-known niche fragrances. Armed with a small list of scents I absolutely wanted to test on my smartphone, I strolled with anticipation towards niche heaven and then came the big disappointment. A long line was already waiting at the entrance.
No, I really don't feel like that right now, what a shame. So I wandered a bit further.
About an hour later, I felt like some fresh air, so I strolled towards the mall exit.
While I enjoyed the peace away from the crowds, my gaze fell on a shop window. Is... is that a perfume store? I walked a bit closer and the door swung open, a smartly dressed gentleman greeted me with a smile. "Please, come in, may I help you?" A bit taken aback, I entered the elegant shop, letting my eyes wander for a few seconds. "I'm looking for various niche fragrances."
He asked me what exactly I had in mind, I replied, "Fragrances from Xerjoff, Amouage, Anfas, Pana Dora, those kinds of brands."
He grinned slyly, "You know, we mainly carry rather unknown brands, not much from those promoted by influencers."
At first, I was a bit skeptical, thinking there wasn't much in the niche segment that I hadn't seen before.
I was quickly proven wrong; for each manufacturer, the nice gentleman had an interesting anecdote on his lips. He knew the exact origin, the "noses" behind the individual fragrances, and possibly even royal stories.
So I wandered through this scent journey in the form of various rose-shaped paper towels; it was like a little dream for a perfume lover like me.
After various high-priced and exclusive creations, the gentleman sprayed a few spritzes without revealing the bottle to me. I was immediately thrilled; what a fantastic opening for a gourmand, it hits my taste perfectly. I couldn't stop smelling it. Smiling, he held the bottle up, "Do you know 4711?"
For a moment, I had to laugh, as I remembered 4711 from my grandpa, those 20DM fragrances "Kölnisch Wasser" that probably everyone had at home back then.
But I couldn't believe my eyes when I actually discovered that little golden "4711" inscription on the bottle.
"IS that from 4711?" I can hardly believe it. "Yes, that's how it is for most people."
Well, 120€ is a bit on the higher side compared to what you would expect from this company, but in relation to various other scents that I own, it’s almost still a bargain.
Happily, I left the store with some samples and a bottle of Smoky Tonka. For me, it was almost a blind buy, as I usually test extensively before deciding on something. I somewhat expected that upon closer inspection it wouldn’t impress me as much.
But I was wrong; I love gourmands and own some great examples like Dates Delight or Oajan. What sets Smoky Tonka apart is the incredibly good opening; it’s unique and addictive. I don't find it synthetic at all, and I'm usually quite sensitive to that.
It is also significantly more versatile than, for example, an Oajan, which I clearly see for deep winter.
In the meantime, I have already convinced 2 colleagues of this scent; everyone who has sniffed it on me wants to know immediately what it is. It magically attracts compliments.
Is it super long-lasting? No, it performs well but not at a high level; however, the sillage is impressive.
When you factor in the price, I consider this scent to be a true bargain.
I have already been tasked with getting two bottles when I’m in the store next time.
4711 has truly surprised me, and even the bottle design is very appealing.
I am amazed; next to TDH, it’s currently my favorite "budget" scent, and I can only highly recommend it.
