Crisply green, yet gentle

Soft, zesty and green with a sharper galbanum type edge. Fresh with a softer floral centre that stays with the more watery florals and nowhere near the fulsome types. Freshly bruised citrus fruits with a green, figgy, sappy note that stays strident. There is a clean herbal quality to this that keeps it right in my favourite crispy green zone.

I was beginning to think Sophie only did cute, but here she presents a well structured and crisp scent suitable for office and smart occasions where being fragranced balances well with being taken seriously.
No sweeties or talcs here, just soft citrus, slightly fruity, sappy and gently woody. Fresh and pleasant and definitely in the green/fresh department. It dries down towards clean musky woods but with a light citrus touch.

This reminds me of a walk on a cool early summers morning when the sun hasn't yet warmed the lemon grove and the figs are just emerging on an old tree you just brushed past. Nothing forceful, just a clean, fresh, watery and crispy, sappy green. I can't see this offending anyone even in places where scents are frowned upon.

Safe flowery citrus

I need to open this review by saying that lemon-centric perfumes have never been a favourite of mine, so my thoughts will be slightly biased.

Vert d'Eau opens fresh and lemony, unfortunately reminding me of run-of-the-mill air-freshener. It smells like someone took a handful of lemon zest, dumped it in ice-cold water, gave it a good shake and then threw it over you, which depending on your preferences, could be either a good or bad thing (the association with air freshener made it more of a bad thing for me, personally).

Fortunately, I get a blast of mandarins and its leaves barely 3 minutes after application, so that helped deviate a little from the initial blast of lemon-flavoured water. I pick up a clean white floral too.

As it wore on, it became more floral and a tad less citric, like a pleasant spring/summertime breeze. It felt like you had your nose in a pot of white blossoms, breathing in the flowers and the leaves, with a bowl of oranges by your side. Not bad at all. Very airy, light, and unobtrusive.

And it just keeps getting more floral! As it wore on, somewhere into the 3rd hour, it developed a slightly fruity feel to it. It wasn't a specific fruit note, but it just freshened it up a bit more and made it more sunshiny. It remained like this all the way till the end of wear.

Overall, I wasn't very impressed. It seemed to be like a very office-safe scent that is citric and floral. Yes, it's uplifting, and yes, I'm glad I stuck on pass the air-freshener opening, but this isn't a game-changer for me.

It sat rather close to the skin, and lasted around 5 hours on me.

Ambered Fig Leaf

Vert d'Eau opens with a mild watery citrus infused aromatic grassy green fig accord before transitioning to its heart. As the composition enters its early heart the citrus-laced grassy green fig deepens, adding mild herbs to the well-blended mix. As time passes the aromatic fig gives way to the now starring green fir-like fig leaf with a very prominent dry amber undertone that grows into co-star as time passes. During the late dry-down the dry amber turns mildly powdery as the fig leaf hangs around, now supporting it. Projection is below average but longevity is superb at between 14-15 hours on skin.

Vert d'Eau started off promising as true to its "Green Water" name it smelled like watery grassy greens. The citrus early-on worked extremely well with the herbal aromatic green nature of the fig, adding near-transparent support giving the composition its watery texture. Then things began to fall apart as the near-coniferous smelling fig leaf and dry amber entered the picture. The combination is not only monotonous, but additionally irritating. It seems like the dry amber will never go away as the composition turn extremely linear from hereon in, only softening briefly at the very end of its life cycle, allowing the wearer to finally enjoy its slightly powdery remnants. The bottom line is Vert d'Eau starts off pleasant but the overwhelming dry amber and fir-like fig leaf prove too much and wear one down as time passes, earning this disappointing overall composition a "below average" 2 to 2.5 star out of 5 rating and a mild avoid recommendation.

A Life Partner

Vert d‘Eau and I took to each other right away.

I loved this leaf scent (initially, I was quite enchanted and thought of tomato leaf, which smells somewhat similar to fig leaves, but after studying the notes, it indeed turns out to be fig leaf).

Vert d‘Eau, on the other hand, apparently loved my skin, as this green water nymph developed sour yet harmonious, a bit green-bitter, just as I expect from a fragrant life partner.

To others, we seemed like a harmonious couple: no arguments, no complicated developments, clear, simple, and pure, just the way I like it.

Vert d‘Eau is unpretentious in appearance, subtly made up, prefers a gray dress of simple elegance that matches its inner values, - although all its siblings apparently have their outfits made by the same tailor, as they all wear the same simple outfit, distinguishable only by their respective names.

But isn’t it true that we men always emphasize that inner values, compatibility, and harmony are more important than appearance?

So what could have gone wrong in this harmonious partnership?

Just before the promise of marriage, however (disrespectfully referred to in Parfumo circles as “entry” or “purchase”), there was an initially almost imperceptible, gradually more noticeable mutual withdrawal of the partners.

As so often in relationships, it was she who took the first step; not offensively, but still subtly noticeable, as if she had grown weary of me.

The initially strong attachment, the clinging to my wrist weakened, faded, and eventually was just a faint whisper.

Her orange mandarin scarf, which I liked so much, she had shed, and she could no longer be persuaded to put it back on for my sake. The delightfully green fig leaf, charged with erotic symbolism since Adam and Eve, became a bit paler and wilted.

If I’m honest, I must even admit that the lemon she had promised me with such enthusiasm at first was never mentioned again and apparently dried up quickly and sustainably without my knowledge, just like the shine of our love.

By this point, I realized that all plans to make our relationship more permanent would have been a mistake.

From time to time, I mourn our love. Then it would surely be nice to have a medium-sized bottle as a keepsake, something to look at quietly and occasionally indulge in memories? We shall see...

But if I’m really completely honest, I have to admit: We men can also be quite fickle. When the pain of memory overwhelms me too much, I simply throw myself into the arms of Diptyque Philosykos. There, the fig leaf is also green and bitter, underscored by a milder note, and actually - despite all the inner and outer virtues of the green water nymph - that is anyway the much more attractive life partner.

Vert D’Eau - I like you!

Finally, one of the Chabaud fragrances is to my taste. I actually only wanted to comment on 3 fragrances, but I like Vert D’Eau exceptionally well, so it’s fair to at least share my impressions/notes:

Fruity, with fresh mandarin, slightly herbaceous/bitter, rather light green, sunny and friendly. Peach sweetens just a little, thank goodness, no sweet bomb like the previous ones! Floral just a bit, fig leaf - what does that smell like? It has something, different from the rest of the family, ideal for hot days, for all occasions. Unisex, yes. Drawback: fades quickly, I hardly perceive the base, only a very delicate sillage. 80 or 90%? I would wear it, but buy it?
