Joy has a daughter.
Sweet oranges and neroli blossoms open, but give way to a rapidly unfurling ylang ylang flower. The almost narcotic floral centre never giving up the innocence of the blossoms over to its more indolic aspects. Sweet fruity nuances reminiscent of honeysuckle, give this a safe and comforting feeling. Like the hug of a grandmother wearing a strong jasmine perfume. A hug that envelops and secures the centre. The reinforcing arms that have been working in the garden still retain the earthy soil. This earthy leafy edge being the patchouli, but its harsher aspects softened by the amber and vanilla. Never sweet but supportive.

This could run the risk of being a heavy jasmine, fruity, patchouli but it always manages to stay on a lighter plane above. As if it hovers above the ground a little like a honeysuckle laden breeze. Like a grandmother, this is strict but sweet and kind too. Joy lovers will like this one.

Lighthearted and uplifting
I have no idea what Bohemian is supposed to smell like, but on me, this opens with a beautiful burst of ylang-ylang laced orange blossoms. It instantly feels uplifting and fresh, the way the aroma of summer fruits make me feel. There's also a hint of greenery in this, which lends to the whole summery feel to this.

An hour and a half later, an unmistakable jasmine comes up. It sneaks up little by little, then suddenly, it's sauntering all over the stage. This doesn't last too long, however, and transitions into a slightly more fruity and sweet stage after 30 minutes.

Chic et Boheme ends on a light, sweet note with a hint of green and florals. I pick up a mild warm feeling and the presence of ylangylang even at the end, but overall, it maintains the lighthearted happiness throughout. In a way, it still manages to be a little somber, and not be completely carefree in its joy. I still found this incredibly pleasant and uplifting though.

Sillage was pretty good, I'd say at about arm's length with a bit more for the first half, and sat quite close to the skin from the 3rd hour onwards. In total, it lasted about 5 hours on me.

Do You Have A Sweet Tooth?...
Chic et Boheme opens with an extremely sweet vanilla-infused Ylang-ylang and orange blossom tandem. As the composition enters its early heart the sweetness starts to dissipate to a degree, decreasing more and more as the composition makes its way through its middle. Also decreasing is the orange blossom, leaving the soapy Ylang-ylang as the focus. During the late dry-down the soapy Ylang-ylang remains the star in a somewhat diminished state, as subtle relatively dry amber adds resinous support. Projection is very good, as is longevity at 9-11 hours on skin.

Chic et Boheme got off to what can only be described as a terrible start. The sweetness exhibited was near unbearable and it did not work with the florals at all. Had I not been reviewing the composition it would have been scrubbed off then and there. Luckily, things improve considerably as the sweetness and orange finally dissipate, leaving a very nice soapy Ylang-ylang in the mid-section that strongly resembles the great Ylang 49 by Le Labo that I love so much. The dry amber in the base provides a deft counter to the soapy Ylang-ylang and Ms. Chaboud gets extra points for avoiding it calling undue attention to itself as most ambers do. If only the perfumer could have skipped the ridiculous initial sweetness the composition would have been a success, but alas it is what it is. The bottom line is Chic et Boheme starts off an abysmal mess, but finishes excellent earning a final verdict of an "above average" 2.5 to 3 stars out of 5. Not recommended, as it is tough to get past the open, and Ylang 49 provides the best part of the composition without one having to suffer first.

The 4711 of the 21st Century
Chic?
Of course, the scent is definitely well-groomed and tasteful, stylish and graceful, charming and unique. And it is fancier than 4711. The distinct neroli note reminds me a lot of the traditional water from the late 18th century, only this one is much softer, not nearly as sharp as 4711. And what I particularly like:

I also perceive an artistically diverse palette: fresh yellow, delicate pastel notes, cozy warm impressions, powdery cream colors, and speckles into velvety dark red, forest green, and deep-sea blue.

The scent is classic-baroque, not old-fashioned, but modernly charming, and I experience an exciting bitter freshness followed by fruity-aromatic warmth. The strong jasmine and the citrus components are softened by the powdery mandarin. The vanilla reveals itself a little later, flowing in, not a sweet fighting vanilla but in complete harmony with the colors of the fruits and flowers.

And what does this have to do with Bohemia?
The term Bohemia refers to a subculture of intellectual fringe groups with predominantly literary, artistic, and musical ambitions, characterized by distinctly anti-bourgeois attitudes and behaviors. This way of life is particularly common in artistic circles, such as among painters, poets, and writers, but also among students. The life of a bohemian is often experienced as more authentic, independent, original, and less alienated.

Is this the part that the rebellious jasmine and often dominant vanilla take on in this scent? The jasmine is packaged differently than one usually knows. Neroli has a different role here than the typical fruity refreshment. Do they support the self-realization of the wearer, criticize the baroque Eau-de-Cologne tradition, subverting it? Do they incite against bourgeois refreshment and penetrate with youthful frivolity the motives of the parental generations in their social structures and culture? Is this scent eccentric and radiates creative freedom? For me, it does. And it is not mainstream. Not at all. And as described at the beginning: a fine variety, colorful without being garishly bright - that is artistic too.

For me, Chic & Bohème is enchanting, stimulating to the imagination, slightly gourmand. The whole composition, underpinned with patchouli and amber, is profoundly soft and sensual. I want to enjoy the entire artwork again, experience this flood of scent colors once more, dive into Bohemia again. That’s why I would like to keep applying it again and again.

Tested multiple times, I like it anew every time. Thanks to the vanilla note, this scent lasts longer for me than the other Chabauds. On clothing, it lasts well for up to 6 hours, on skin at least an acceptable 3-4 hours, like a good Eau de Cologne, and longer than 4711 - I believe...

edit: 8 months later, this scent has finally settled in with me.

Chic and elegant, I do not want to be
Chic and elegant, I say no!

With the name of the perfume and the corresponding scent, I somehow thought of that NDW hit.

I experienced Chic et Bohème similarly to Seerose; the scent overwhelmed me. I was very cautious when applying it.

CeB has no scent development for my nose. It smells of jasmine from start to finish, and in a narcotic intensity. Once applied, it spreads like wildfire.

In contrast to Seerose, I did not find the jasmine note (thank God) fecal or even cadaverous, but simply annoying, which is due to my aversion to overly floral scents.

To feel chic or even bohemian with this perfume, one needs a preference for intense floral notes; otherwise, the scent will overpower you.

That’s why I now sing: Chic and Bohème, I do not want to be.....

The scent comes classically in white with simple embellishments. More floral than fruity. Simple, pleasant elegance for everyday wear.

1. For a long time, an indolent-pressing white floral scent - in the background, citrusy + sweetly enchanting floral mix patiently awaits its turn.
