Amber Without Amber
This scent goes on with a warm kind of ambergris feel but also spiky (cedar) at the same time. It's aggressive and has a nice solid projection at a few feet. It billows around you but it doesn't overwhelm. After 30 minutes or so, the cedar withdraws and the scent becomes the warm amber of Amber Neu, which I love. Oddly enough, I can't pinpoint the notes that create this scent -- ambergris or stryax isn't listed, so perhaps this is opponax? I don't get any of the tree scents here, nor the geranium (for which I am grateful). The mandarin helps create the warmth and the summery amber aroma, but it is blended so well that you don't ever get it as a separate note.

Amber Teutonic lasts all day, gradually fading to a warm amber skin scent. I do enjoy it, and if you do not have an ambergris scent, this is top-notch. It does differ from Amber Neu in its initial aggression, but they are similar enough that it's probably not a great investment to own both. I am biased -- my first experience with an ambergris scent that worked for me was Amber Neu, so I'm going to get it first. Also, although I love DS&Durga, Atelier (Amber Neu) is a bit cheaper.

In short, a good quality ambergris-style scent. If I wasn't already spoken for in this department, I would be getting this (well, eventually as I'm still not rich).

More tropical than Teutonic
Being the forest lover that I am, as soon as I heard about this fragrance, I bought it blindly. When will I learn that that's never a good idea?! I could have bought a backup of Bowmaker's instead. To me this fragrance smells coconutty from the get-go. It's really annoying. I was never a huge fan of amber, and this one smells very much like many ambers out there--the kind of amber that seems a bit like play-doh. It's the same amber I get from L'Artisan's Amber, Mona di Orio...lots of others. That isn't a bad thing in and of itself, I mean, it's called AMBER Tuetonic for goodness sake, so you should totally expect amber. The weird, creamy coconuttiness bothers me and seems really out of place. I am not getting these wonderful woods that are in the notes. It's all drowning in this common amber with coconut. There is also a citrusy note that annoys me. So basically, I am not reminded of any type of old forest, much less a European one. Really no forest at all, come to think of it. Anyway, not my cup of tea, although I tend to enjoy a lot of this house's fragrances. I would love to know if I am the only one who is getting this creamy coconut note.

Collecting Amber in Teutonic Forests
The house D.S. & Durga didn't mean much to me recently, and even now my knowledge about this house hasn't grown exorbitantly. But that could change, because what has certainly grown is my interest in the fragrance house, and that is due to Amber Teutonic, as the scent is for me a kind of balsamic and at times fresh-citrusy Egoiste. I can hardly believe I'm saying this, but Egoiste is indeed my favorite perfume, and that without leather.
What does a Teutonic scent like, one might wonder. What it certainly lives off, the fragrance tells us, namely from the trade in amber, also known as amber. So should it be more about the scent of amber, which smelled different in this region? Is it more an interpretation of a typical scene from back then? One doesn't know, and today I don't want to tell you a fictional story but rather describe the scent in detail, which in my eyes is excellent, and I want to honor that.
At first, it is very herb-fresh, which will probably be the green mandarin. Our alpine cedar seems to have contributed a slightly sweet resin, or rather it comes from opoponax - more on that later - because for a moment Amber Teutonic wavers in that direction, but fortunately catches itself immediately. Then the cedar smells as royal and majestic as one knows it. Wonderful, I love that! Now we have cardamom, which has been added. If I were to say that it is perceived olfactorily intensely, I would have to lie. However, what it does with the cedar is this: the cedar receives a dirty, enchanting note, becoming somewhat warmer, as if the sticky resin were dripping down in small irregular chunks. Underneath, we still have the mandarin, which drips its still bitter juice onto the resin.
Now it becomes balsamic at some point. Larch and pine cones are added. The scent becomes woodier. Now one must imagine, how does a pine cone smell? Rather weakly woody, sometimes earthy in undertone, so my memory. Now the pine cone ignites more of a fine aura in Amber Teutonic, reminding us that we are exploring the forest, reminding us to find the amber. The larch itself is used here and there in medicine as a calming element, and thus a soothing woody tone also emanates from the larch here. It is not a cold winter in the forest. The sun is shining, it is mild, the birds are chirping, it is simply a beautiful day. An idyll.
Ultimately, we arrive at what has been playing a permanent role in the scent, which I only really learned to associate with this perfume: opoponax. This resin smells balsamic-woody, slightly sweet but very intense. I have the feeling that it reminds me of that sandalwood-tobacco-vanilla blend in Egoiste, just with a woodier touch. This scent also weaves a more intense web, giving the cedar new facets and weaving the net with the larch and pine cones tighter. Like a siren, it drew us in and highlighted the few differences to Egoiste in my eyes: a tiny trace of earthiness that clings to the green.
Amber Teutonic is wonderful, and I thank AdAstra very much for the sample, which I initially hesitated to accept and chose other decants instead. Nevertheless, he included a sample of this scent. I have encountered a wonderful fragrance, and my bank account has learned of another deduction. Joy on one side, sorrow on the other. But at least I will now be able to sleep peacefully thanks to the balsamic note.

With Rhyme to Green Amberstone
(The full version or reference to the statement)

On a sunny day I left the house
because the gray walls became too tight
and bumped my head on the ceiling.

It was time again to see something green
No, not the broccoli between my teeth
I mean to go into the forest.

On a new path that I walked
I discovered an entrance to the woods
a contrasting, light-filled reception
where many pine cones hung

Should I go in? And I started to ponder
I dared a small step inside
Then a cone plopped down on my head

For a moment I wobbled, then it began to speak:
"Hey hey stranger, come right in
This here is the mandarin grove"
The cone speaks!?, I thought I was imagining it
Maybe the aftereffects of yesterday's wine

"No no, this is real," it replied
"Welcome home, don't you know it?"
"The hideout of the green amberstone?"
"My cone friends will show the way there
Condition between us, it stays a secret"

Okay okay, I thought and stopped asking
Gave the little pest my word
A small adventure can’t hurt

I followed the cones and beams of light
Vitamin D flowed through my veins
The slightly fruity scent felt like a blessing
I felt happiness expanding within me

The trees grew brighter, the air more ethereal
Resin gleamed in amber colors
Similar to honeycombs
It smelled as if the pines were coming closer and closer

At the end of the path, I saw a shrine
Adorned with woods and resins
What could be hidden here
It felt like a farce

I opened the chest
My mouth fell open
It sparkled green-white
Like a mix of jade and danburite

I felt the scent intoxication awaken within me
Green, as if I were a piece of the forest
White wings unfolding
Graceful, with a soft embrace

Carried me away, made me fly
Eyes that wouldn’t open
Dazed by the scent intoxication
Like in nirvana - senses unhinged

Arriving back on the ground of reality
I noticed my senses again
Just a bit dazed

I found myself back at the entrance to the woods
Exactly the same position
Only there was no forest and entrance anymore
Was it all just an illusion?

My gaze fell to the ground
And I didn’t want to believe it
There I saw a cone lying
I thought only, come on now, I’m going home...

Teutonic vs. Kiso
Twice Amber, without Amber. After having sniffed both new Durgas separately and in parallel, I now want to pull out the keyboard and write a short comment. My previous scent excursions into the theme of Amber have all been of short duration. I was always bothered by this soft melt, the fluffy-sweetish sweetness, too exhausting and too loud for everyday use. Now, I am truly a Durga fan, know everything and have had quite a bit. The creations have (almost) all convinced me, are special and exude pure natural charm like no other brand. You have a fragrance, not a perfume. It smells pleasant, somewhat ethereal, but doesn’t cloud the room. I was very curious about the new ones. And what can I say? Durga is back, it’s brewing, earthy, steaming, and smoking again. Both scents immediately bring certain parallels from the bottle. There is a fine but soft darkness with a dirty earthy base. Overall, Teutonic is more subtle, reserved, quieter. Here I can also smell a certain imbalance. The geranium strikes me as disturbing, creating a trampled wild rose carpet that gives the fragrance an almost sour note. Kiso, on the other hand, comes across smoother, more balanced, and with significantly more presence. Everything is just right here, including the longevity. It easily lasts a whole day in a seminar, remaining natural, close to me, and always accessible. It exudes pure nature to my nose. It is also earthy, completely unsweet, darkly ambered, smoky. Nothing scratches, it only caresses. I think of damp wood, smoke, and steam. Both fragrances have a slightly animalistic note that adds depth and captivates. It quickly becomes clear who my favorite is: Kiso. Perhaps in the Teutonic attempt, it’s a bit too much of a good thing. The forest with the mandarin, the crushed rose... somehow, something. However, Teutonic is also a fine fragrance and definitely worth a test for anyone who likes special, perhaps even slightly quirky scents. Those who have once allowed Kiso and discovered it for themselves will surely find a new favorite fragrance in it quickly. Just like I did!
