A Ride Too Short
Freetrapper dawns with an aldehyldic zing, something vaguely fruity -- like a moscato -- and a hint of pepper. Gently it blooms into a deep, warm, enveloping, masculine scent, occasionally smoky, which is the amberwood and the frankincense. This brings a smile to my face and as it develops, wafts of this amber-like depth punctuated by pepper rise around me. I have a thing for DS & Durga's "wild" scents and this promised to be a keeper; unfortunately, it peters out around hour six. Placing it on the back of my wrists does help extend the duration a few hours more. When it fades, it becomes a skin scent, slightly earthy scent with some of the initial warmth.

Like most DS & Durga scents, this is enjoyable, well-blended, and gripped with charm. However, I can't hang with scents that only last half the day. If you don't mind that, Freetrapper is an enjoyable but all-too-short ride.

Old Man of the Lake
In the northwest of the USA lies the state of Oregon, which, despite its hip metropolis Portland, always remains a bit in the shadow of glamorous California to the south and the more northerly Washington with its dramatically more scenic landscapes and the even more famous Seattle. In the south of the state of Oregon lies its only national park - and in the middle of this national park is the crater lake that gives it its name, a volcanic crater filled with rainwater over the millennia. And in the middle of this crater lake floats an old tree stump, first mentioned in 1896, but it had already been there for quite some time - upright, now covered with lichens and moss. The locals call this stump, which is probably that of a hemlock tree, 'Old Man of the Lake'.

Many, if not all, of the previously used images can be found in D.S. & Durga's Freetrapper - or at least are quoted from it. There is a hint of a barren landscape, indecisive in its aromatic universe between north and south - resinous, herbal, gray-green-brown. There are echoes of old wood, which could be coniferous wood or driftwood - or perhaps both? There is something mineral and something that sometimes almost has an aquatic quality. There is something archaically masculine, rough, perhaps coarse. And there is something very clear, accentuated, and almost luminous - just like the sky over Oregon reflects in the clear, azure waters of Crater Lake. There is a scent that tells a lot about this distant, wild, and untouched land - and yet it is more likely to be found in Portland's bars, in Vancouver, or Seattle. But because it can tell such a beautiful story - who cares?

Conclusion: you don't just 'stop by' Crater Lake - it's a five-hour drive from Portland, and even six from San Francisco. And when the lake is shrouded in fog, you might not see the Old Man of the Lake again. To all those who are unlikely to make it there, a try of D.S. & Durga's Freetrapper is therefore highly recommended. And for those who do make it, actually, it is too.

On the Trail of the Orange Sun
The large, low-hanging sun painted the sky in rich shades of orange as he finally reached the cabin. And although it resembled a ripe, unfamiliar fruit and still radiated enough warmth, he would not be deceived by this apparent friendliness. He knew - at this time of year, the color of the sky indicated a strong oncoming wind. And what surprise the wind would bring remained to be seen.

He pushed the heavy wooden bar aside, opened the door, and stepped inside. Everything seemed to be just as it had been many weeks ago when he set out on his rounds of the traps on Blackbear Island. Through the cloudy little window, the sun cast its last fruity-colored ray and painted a bright square on the wooden floor. A curious squirrel peeked through the window from a lower pine branch and then disappeared again.

The dry wood he had prepared before leaving crackled minutes later in the fire. He sat down on the hard bed, grimacing in pain as he took off his jacket and shirt - the bandage around his ribs was dry, the wound no longer bled. From his shoulder bag, he pulled out a decorated wooden jar - a gift from the old Cree woman who had found him and tended to his wound in the past weeks. The salve smelled bitter, of herbs and roots known only to the Cree. He applied some salve to the wound and rewrapped the bandage. It grew dark. Meanwhile, the water set to boil over the fire was ready. A handful of dried herbs in the cup, infused and slowly swelling, released their soothing scent. After the meager evening meal, consisting of two dry flatbreads and the bitter herbal broth, he fed two more logs to the hungry, smoking fire and lay back on his hay-filled mattress, hands behind his head. His gaze wandered over the cabin walls, where the beaver pelts were hung up to dry. This year's catch looked modest. Due to his injury, he would not be able to make up for much. The roughly 65-mile canoe trip down the Albany River to Fort Albany would also be a challenge with his injury. With a few coins that the Hudson's Bay Company pays trappers like him for the many pelts, they would then return to their wintering places before the first snow. Hopefully, the money would at least be enough for ammunition; he could forget about a new rifle for now. Lulled by the crackling of the resin drops in the fire and the mixed scent of smoke, wood, resin, fur, salve, and tea, his thoughts slowed down, and he sank into sleep... He dreamed of a new shiny rifle. Of dancing beaver pelts. In the bright lights of the salons. On the pretty shoulders of ladies and proud heads of gentlemen... And he saw the old Cree woman. She looked at him reproachfully in the eyes.

Such a handsome guy. But he's not faithful.
Well great, now I'm sitting here all alone. The fire is out and it's getting dark. And it's only early afternoon. One shouldn't get involved with strange guys met in the woods... But let's take it step by step.
I met him on a trip into the wilderness. What struck me first was his fresh, light pine scent. Invigorating, friendly (not prickly) needles they were. An inviting intro. Who wouldn't want to get closer?
After about half an hour, a fine wood note joined in but didn't stay long. I could already tell - he was a bit reserved. But I was already hooked. At times, I thought I could subtly perceive a lovely floral note, and later a hint of incense wafted by. After about an hour, the citrus notes slowly said goodbye, but never completely. A bit of their aroma (without acidity) remained. I could clearly see them peeking out from behind the bushes to see how things were progressing between us.
There were other facets, but they kept very much in the background, only shading the trapper here and there. A very subtle smoky note, for example, from the campfire we were warming ourselves by, and a hint of rubber. Normally, I steer clear of rubber. But here, in the vastness of the prairie, it blended softly and warmly into the overall picture. Somewhere, far beneath everything else, a small wild animal brushed through the underbrush. But it remained shyly hidden, never fully revealing itself. Because "he's not that kind of guy," the trapper.
So I feel very comfortable, smiling to myself, taking care of real life for a while, and thinking that this could be something solid between us. When I then turn back to the trapper (my wrist) in hopes of a kiss - he's gone!?! After just 3.5 hours?! His aura still lingers in the air... yet (realistically speaking) the guy has vanished.
But wait - there's a card. He actually wrote down where I can find him if I want more. Great, I bet I'll be stuck with the bill for the bottle.
And it won't be cheap, because for a whole day with Trapperboy, you'd have to reapply 3 times, and then a flask like that is just enough for a summer fling. Under these circumstances, I really have to think carefully about giving us a chance.
However... he is truly an attractive and smooth guy...

Freetrapper is a light, calm, gentle, and indeed elegant feel-good scent that effortlessly masters the connection of warm and fresh, of soothing and invigorating. In terms of intensity, he is light but noticeable, without needing to bathe in it. The sillage is close to the body. But he is definitely a bit too fleeting for this price range. However, if money is no object, this scent is a safe blind buy for anyone who likes this direction. I can hardly imagine it causing discomfort for anyone.
I greatly appreciate it when notes don't loudly burst in through the door or jump onto the fragrance stage like a flash mob, because a good perfume is also a matter of texture, timing, and skillfully blurred transitions. And this natural guy really excels at that.
Everything flows gently and harmoniously into one another, no note dominates or suppresses the others.
And I keep thinking of another handsome fellow (who has also vanished by now). The two are not twins, but anyone who loves "Insense" by Givenchy will not hate Freetrapper.

Through Woods and Fields
I walk in the woods, it's a forest in the south. It smells beautifully of resin and green needles.

A dog suddenly appears next to me and accompanies me. Just as I get used to its scent, it’s gone again.

Slowly, the forest thins out. Herbs and flowers release their fragrance, and the dog seems to be nearby again.

After a few hours, the forest becomes denser again, and there is a small chapel where a censer was swung not long ago.

My walk lasts a few more hours, and the scent of resin and herbs gradually fades.

Freetrapper is a very pleasant resinous scent. Green, floral, and also light animal notes round it off. The projection is strong for the first two hours before becoming very close to the skin. It lasts about seven hours on me.

I thank Fluxit for the sample.

In the opening, it's more approachable thanks to the orange tones, then increasingly distant with woody notes, consistently smoky, a bit animalistic: exciting!
