Snake in the Jasmine fields

I like almost everything by D.S. & Durga (except Vio-Volta, their hopefully sole sojourn into serious aromachemicals), so I was practically guaranteed to like their Jazmin Yucatán, Jasmine being my hands down favorite floral.

I didn’t know I’d also like the smell of snake plant, but I do. It’s part of how, with the help of Vétiver and “aquatic notes”, they were able to capture the green wetness of the Yucatán jungle.

I am marinating in the result, at the moment, in anticipation of going into a long meditation. What fit company for the journey: plant, earth, water, a bit of citrus, a bit of spice, and a flower exchanged by lovers in the Himalayas, along the Ganges, and in Persia since long ago.

Longevity: moderate. Scent: mesmerizing.

Lovely fresh floral with cloves and resins

D.S. & Durga Jazmin Yucutan is a 2020 release from this Brooklyn-based niche house, conjuring the tropical bright floral, green experience one might expect from the name. It opens with a loud, fairly sharp statement led by white florals, drying down into a floral, green, resinous, semi-spicy mix featuring copal and cloves. This is a very interesting creation overall, not in my typical tropical wheelhouse as I usually opt for fruitier/sweeter options (like Six Scents Urban Tropicalia, or perhaps the Dua Brand’s Exotic Fruits of Dua), but for those that want steer clear of something overly fruity or sweet, Jazmin Yucutan is a really nice option, and as with pretty much everything I’ve tried from D.S. & Durga, is high-quality.

The retail pricing for Jazmin Yucutan is in line with the rest of the house, at $175 for 50ml, and it is sold through the website directly, boutiques like Tigerlily Perfumery (from whom I bought a sample), and department stores like Nordstrom and Saks Fifth Avenue. It performs well, particularly for a fresh fragrance, and I’d recommend sampling it.

Humid greenhouse and bubblegummy jasmine

This perfume is so hot. Literally. Hot as in the air is heavy and wet and you're sweating, and so are the plants around you. It's almost to the point of headiness but the green/aquatic notes keeps it from feeling too heavy-queasy. It's sexy, captivating, potent. And yet there's still this slight clean/soapy facet remaining from the jasmine and depth from the clove + resins, which in my opinion makes this fragrance versatile and genderfluid. It's flirty and steamy. It reminds me of a summer's day in the south of france, the sun is starting to set, jasmine is covering the walls of any building you walk past to and its scent trail follows you everywhere you go, sticking to the sweat of your body. It's lovely.

It’s giving Sexy Houseplant

I mean this in the best way possible, of course. The jasmine for which this fragrance is named starts things off pretty strong but is quickly matched by a green, humid note that I assume is the snake plant. They also went nuts on the aquatic here but in a way that evokes misting a potted plant every once in a while.

and wetness is the essence of beauty??

Very pleasant jasmine scent with a realistic wet quality- not a sharp ozonic aquatic accord but a subtle, humid-feeling undercurrent. It's almost "musty" in a comforting way- like the smell of a greenhouse (not quite enough depth or greenery for me to comfortably say "jungle" here) or indoor fountain. The jasmine is creamy and not overly screechy or indolic. Something about the white floral + humidity evokes the nostalgia of an 80s high end shopping mall. The clove note doesn't come across very strongly for me, but it is present and keeps the scent from being boring or plain. The worst part of the scent is the poor longevity- I only got ~2hrs and at that price point it's a bit disappointing.
