Not Unique but Well Executed
While Cuir Cannage may not be among the most original Dior releases, it is my favorite, second only to Eau Noire and overtaking Dior Homme Parfum. I'm not a fan of this house, but I love what they did with the early Privee line. Many critiqued Demachy, but he had a good run at Dior. Now, "Captain Diabetes" is in charge, and if you could still get perfumes like Cuir Cannage in Paris before, Kurkdijan decided to make it easier for you and completely terminate the best scents from an already elusive line.

As I said, Cuir Cannage doesn't bring anything new to the leather genre. Yes, it was inspired by Chanel's Cuir de Russie and then sits right in the same lane as perfumes like Knize, Tabac Blond, Cuir Mauresque, and Great Britain, but for me, it shines more than the others. It easily tops the Chanel; it is less sweet/syrupy and more about the leather compared to the Lutens (which I owned, wore, and loved for years), and it is not as powdery and floral as the Roja. It walks the perfect balance between a smoky/ashy leather with woody and musky undertones and beautiful floral notes (orange blossom mostly with some ylang and iris). It is assertive and even slightly aggressive, but never crosses the line. It is elegant and sophisticated but knows how to make a stand. For me, it plays the perfect tune. The right amount of everything, while nothing feels out of place. I like the dry and ashy aspects of it, but also the oily-sweet muskiness it dries down to, with just the right amount of birch. I don't find it overly floral and detect more of the orange blossom over the iris and the ylang-ylang, especially in the opening and through the heart, while the base is more about the smoky woods and faux castoreum.

Beyond leather
A blanket of elegance and comfort. You cannot buy style, it’s a state of mind and François Demachy has proven this once again. The opening is a wave of bergamot/orange blossom that spreads further with birch and leather but in such an elegant way that you can't help but love this perfume. Where does it stop? Sound can create echoes, this smell doesn't stop if you know what I mean. The birch becomes so soft with the tobacco and violet that your senses now get the true meaning of leather. The statement in 2014 was that they wanted to “scent the inside of a leather bag”…..I see a piece of wood with a fine layer of varnish or even as Andy Tauer described his Lonestar Memories as a rider after a long day on his horse...well the saddle of that horse, that paint, the leather pfffff where does it stop? Well...on the Cote d'Azur after sunset on a terrace and dreaming that this scent would never end…. Best discontinued fragrance ever!!!!
Ps: this is about the 2014 batch…

This is how Dior DNA smells like
Cuir Cannage is to me the most classic representation of Dior house...just like No5 for Chanel or
Shalimar for Guerlain. You can imagine a combination of an orange Italian soap and brown suede leather. The result is powdery...make-up-like. It smells 1920s. It is a warm scent and quite feminine. Others compare it to Cuir de Russie from Chanel and I compare it to Maitre Parfumeur et Gantier Cuir Fetiche which is a lighter more polished version of Cuir Cannage but pretty much the same in the end.

Smooth leather
I don’t want to spread rumors but it seems to me that this fragrance is getting discontinued or at least limited in its distribution. Last year, I’ve also talked to some sales assistants in different parts of the world (Berlin, Dubai, San Francisco,...) who told me that they are out of stock without knowing if and when it’s going to be back in stock. Since there was practically no way to try it, I’ve made a blind buy online. Because it’s still in stock online (European Dior Website).

Everyone in the community knows that blind buys can go pretty right or pretty wrong. In my case I’m still not sure how to categorize this blind buy.

Upon the first spray on a paper tissue it reminded me on an old subway car with leather seats. It’s not really what I want to smell like. I got a similar first impression when I sprayed it on skin. However, on skin, the fragrance turns into something much more pleasant after 5 mins. And I actually can enjoy what I get after 5mins.

The scent is a very smooth leather with some florals (mainly iris and jasmine) to keep it balanced. This fragrance is not rough like Tom Fords Tuscan Leather and it’s not as sweet and gourmand like Valentino Uomo Intense or Dior Homme Intense. It has a tiny vintage vibe but still smells sophisticated and elegant. It’s unisex but for people 25+ years.

It’s a bit like a leather fragrance that was washed with a very high quality wash soap. So the florals do have a soapy appeal. However I find this fragrance also tiny bit animalic, due to the Jasmine, but this part of the fragrance never becomes dominant.

I don’t know if Dior changed the formula but I cannot confirm that this fragrance is filling a room. It projects nicely for a while and stays on skin for 8h (maybe even a bit longer) but it’s not beastly.

I have grown to like Cuir Cannage and I’m happy that it’s in my collection. But everyone has to decide for herself/himself if it’s worth 200€.

Cuir Cannage
Is this Dior’s answer to Chanel’s Cuir de Russie? Possibly. If the Chanel was made to recreate the smell of russian boots, this one is reminiscent of the fancy Dior bags worn by fancy women. Indeed this has a lipsticky , make up vibe that the Chanel lacks. One of the greatest leather perfumes ever made in my humble opinion.
There were rumors of discontinuation.

Smells like clean laundry, and a bit old. Leather and iris mainly, in the same style as Cuir Ottoman (Parfum d'empire)

I am testing this now in 2023. I am not sure how much this has been reformulated (probably a lot) but this is a huge disappointment.

Intense rose- iris leathery scent, a bit dirty, with a good sillage compared to other Dior exclusives. Decent!

An extraordinary mix of smoke, leather and sweet notes of flowers, strong violet. I also sense some fruits (raspberry?). Outstanding
