A stunning unconventional Cocoa-Oud accord
Today I am wearing Ungaro III Oud, which is supposed to be a flanker of the Original Ungaro III with a bit of more sensuality and mystery, and it is all worth the blind buy! The scent follows the oriental woody-spicy oud trend, yet without the presence of the rose. The fact that it doesn't have any rose, even the slightest of rose, might be a plus, in my opinion, because you immediately move away from the oriental middle eastern vibe. Don't get me wrong, I love the blend of rose and oud, yet I think oud is very versatile and could deliver a new generation of scents when used in Mediterranean style scents. Seriously.

First impressions are mainly black leather, bitter cocoa, and a hint of balsamic woody-amber notes of oud in there, but little trace of the original version. The oud is barely present enough to call this an oud fragrance if that is what you're looking for. However, the slightly burnt leather and bitter cocoa are beautiful to my nose.

Ungaro III Oud opens up very sharp, spicy, and crisp, with an undertone of medicinal note, a kind of like cough syrup, probably that is the cardamom giving the sharpness on the opening. Besides, there is a bit of burnt leather, as I mentioned, it is not disturbing but can only be noticed when smelled close on the skin. The same goes for pepper; it doesn't last very long but creates a "barbershop" vibe on the opening for a few minutes.

Then the tart cocoa mixed with oud take the lead. It is all we can praise! Clean oud, this time not dirty, opulent, or burnt. It smells fresh, and cocoa is also not dark but very round, giving warmth to the scent. If you're anything like me, and you're a big fan of chocolate -believe it or not, some people aren't- you will love this stage, being this the most gourmand part of it.

For those who are in search of oud scents without a rose but more linear and fresh type, this is a must-try. Longevity on my skin is moderate, while performance-wise, it's not a beast though I went light with the sprays. As I've already said, it compares quite differently to the original version, being something that would be ideal for Autumn or better for Winter. They're different enough to warrant owning both if you happen to like oud-based cologne.

Brake Stripes in Vodka
An oud flanker is launched by every fragrance nowadays as soon as it has only passed over the counter three times. Oud always works. Apparently even years after the peak of the trend. That people were/are more than oversaturated is shown by the silent resonance of this Ungaro offshoot released three years ago. I had neither heard of it nor seen it in the shop, just a phantom. Until I found it online at a bargain price and simply pressed Buy - because I have come to appreciate the anything but arbitrary original more and more over the years. How does the oud offspring perform?

Well. Tasty. Ordinary. And there lies the catch. Because "Ungaro Pour L'Homme III" is anything but normal, mainstream, trivial with its alcoholic (vodka) masculinity. This oudy offspring, on the other hand, exudes a certain boredom. Don’t get me wrong, it is a tasty cocoa scent with a not really matching aluminum-like overlay, which can probably still be interpreted as the original's primal DNA (rose + vodka). But otherwise, there isn’t much. Those looking for a non-sweet, blunt cocoa scent - feel free to grab it! However, those who expected an Ungaro III or another innovative, unusual variation will be disappointed. It smells a bit like cocoa vodka - and whether that suits you is something everyone has to decide for themselves. I prefer one or the other. Like sharpened pencils in a chocolate museum, like Christmas at the Kremlin, like oud without eggs. Doesn’t go together. Clashes.

Bottle: mine has strange little black dots on the gold... probably not a very good quality of the coating. Otherwise good. Great spray head.
Sillage: rather skin-friendly
Longevity: it only dissipates after 7 hours

Conclusion: I like the original more - you don’t have to squeeze oud into everything! Still: it is certainly wearable and safe. Especially for oud fans who must test everything oudy.

Cocoa, if at all, is very subtle and not animalic oud - instead, there's incense - closer to Epic Man than to this fragrance pyramid!

Well-integrated oud, gentle cocoa, a bit of spice. Actually not that sweet, surprisingly suitable for everyday and office wear.

Reminds me of Epic Man, which isn't a bad thing at all.

For me, a smooth oud with cocoa and pleasant spice. It harmonizes very well. But when I first smelled it, I thought more of incense.

Boldly used, voluminous oud with a woody character. Plus a hint of unsweetened cocoa and mild pepper. A successful surprise!
