obscure beauty
This is my first encounter with this edt in the dark blue bottle with a green and gold cap. My box has the dated 1991. I have to admit I am a stranger to this house, so its release date is irrelevant. Diva was only casually noted by me in a magazine from 1987! Big hair, shoulder pads and dramatic makeup. The only thing missing was a cigarette, fur and hosiery. It's strange how quickly these things went out of fashion...

Ungaro has all of the ingredients to be a favorite of mine. That was the reason I have been hunting for a bottle for years. Today I found one and had no expectations. Right out of box, I was underwhelmed. Was it really gone in an hour? I decided to grab a shower and give myself a full drenching of this flirty, but shy mystery formula. Yes, it demands your full attention. I get very little aldehydes thankfully. There is a lemon soda pop vibe here as well. Then come this parade of waxy/oily neroli/orange blossom and roses covered in a powdery sweetness(iris?) and vanilla/tonka. This is then cut with sharp oakmoss, vetiver and patchouli. They all sit on creamy amber/musk with yet more caramel vanilla on a soft wood base. This was tailor-made for me!

Where was it hiding for the past 30 years? It resembles Joop and Clandestine the most. Ungaro avoids tuberose and civet, thankfully. This was like the next step for the big 80s classics, yet it obviously had the wrong decade to be a real hit. Its limited stock on the aftermarket makes it all the more-rare today. This will be my only bottle for this lifetime. Ungaro is a jealous crush who never let me know its motives. It's never too late to begin a new relationship with such a beauty!

Navy Blue Dress, Spicy Scent, Green Hat
This is what the bottle looks like, this is how the contents smell. No... this comment is not the end... These are merely the first facts I have noted.
But there is so much more behind it.
What greets me upon spraying has class. A whole load of coriander, very exotic, combined with neroli and jasmine creates a classic "scent bomb," where the fuse is very long. One waits for the floral explosion that unleashes the full richness.
Yet even during this waiting time, a "robe" gradually unfolds, in dark blue, just like in ancient Roman style, almost simple, with a beautiful drape, but astonishing and beautiful in its effect.
A floral quartet, as I can perceive not only blue iris, "green" lily of the valley, and velvety dark red rose but also garden carnations (clove carnations!?) that slightly support the coriander in its "dark" effect.
A hint of powder emerges beneath, just a tiny bit...
Beneath, swarms of fine, woody notes have gathered, waiting for their opportunity. Some are so impatient that they start early. Sandalwood and cedar are the first to make their way, followed by patchouli, a bit of vetiver. Cardamom and myrrh (not mentioned above) follow hesitantly at first, but after their "breakthrough," almost stormily.
Balsamic notes give the entire creation firmness and support, softening all the harsher contrasts. Yet these make the scent very fascinating, even if they are now "softened."
The wondrous impression of a spicy-floral oriental fragrance with a woody and "balsamic" base remains for hours and makes me think of the beautiful blue dress from which this scent emanates. Surrounded by a "Roman woman" with classic features and a benevolent smile...

Truly Grand Evening Gown
Emanuel Ungaro learned the tailoring craft from the ground up. He began his career in Aix en Provence, where he first designed dresses for his sister. She then made his skills known in Italian society.

In the mid-50s, he joined the house of Balenciaga, where he was promoted to head designer three years later.

Together with his then-partner, textile designer Sonja Knapp, he founded his own fashion house in 1965.

Ungaro was known for his large-scale patterns and material mixes, but even more so for his draping art.

He created his grand gowns directly on the model, folding the materials until breathtaking works of tailoring art emerged. The most famous example of this is the white evening gown that inspired the bottle of Diva.

When I first saw the bottle of Ungaro, I immediately thought of the fragrance Senso from the same house, which apparently was launched in a similar guise. And somehow I have the feeling that a bit of the Ungaro perfume is also present in Senso. I suspect a similar floral accord here, but I could be mistaken, as it has been about 20 years since I last had Senso under my nose.

Ungaro 1977 is a very mature women's perfume, meant for special occasions. Such a magnificent fragrance is not worn during the day; that would be too much of a good thing.

The opening is still relatively harsh and almost austere. I have the impression that this is due to the interplay of coriander, aldehydes, and lemon, which take any sweetness away from the citrus blossoms.

In the heart, Ungaro remains subtly sweet and becomes delicately powdery. The floral accord is very well balanced and lasts an eternity.

With the base, Ungaro then becomes moderately sensual and a touch spicy, yet without losing its presence. I think if some oak moss had been incorporated here, Ungaro 1977 could have also made a great chypre.

Although I was bolder in my fragrance choices during my youth than I am today, I wouldn't have worn this Ungaro back then. It is hard to get more evening gown and lady than this perfume.

Dear Milosava, thank you very much for this truly intoxicating fragrance experience.

The Scent That Remained
Recently, I was pondering which fragrance could match the punchiness of Molinard's Habanita and came to the following conclusion:
Red Door, Giorgio Beverly Hills (Classic and Red), and Senso by Ungaro are breathtakingly strong and long-lasting, but not necessarily wearable nowadays.
Ungaro 1977 by Ungaro is, however.

I hadn't smelled it for a long time, even though I once loved it, and had to jog my memory to write a few lines about it... even the moment Ungaro meets the skin is an experience. The ultimate spiced lemon, lightly sweetened. Super delicious, although already quite strong for a top note that takes some getting used to.
The heart note does not, as expected from the mentioned notes, transition into a floral garden, but reveals an oriental, rosy dessert, like Turkish Delight, a sweet rose jelly, or rose jam with spices... to put it in modern terms: absolutely amazing.
I always wonder whether anyone would want this nowadays or if it would even be wearable - but I affirm this for myself with a vigorous nod! In the land of mild waters, in the era of fresh scents, Ungaro 1977 is indeed loud, but not unpleasant, intrusive, or sticky!
The base even has a certain woody powderiness, which is intriguingly rounded off with cardamom, making it very interesting and spicy-fresh.

I can only say it again... in that price segment back then, an incredibly good and long-lasting fragrance, which is hardly found today.

PS The bottle shown above was already the 2nd version; the first came in a frosted glass bottle, but with the same pleated design.

Homage to a Great Classic
Ungaro unmistakably bears the signature of Jacques Polge. I was fortunate enough to snag an intact bottle of Eau de Parfum on eBay. The packaging dates back to 1990, and as I recall, the fragrance was also released that year, not in 1977 as listed in the database. Ungaro is unmistakably a child of the late 80s and early 90s in terms of its scent character. Here, numerous floral-sweet notes unite with balsamic, resinous spicy notes. At the outset, you can clearly smell the orange blossom, but also the spicy coriander. These notes then blend with a distinct rose that remains in the background. After that, the resinous sweet base unfolds with dominant tonka bean, vanilla, cedar, and sandalwood. All the notes alternate and make the fragrance multifaceted and deep. Connoisseurs of this scent often compare it to the perfume Joop pour Femme (in the dark blue packaging from 1987). Indeed, the fragrances are similar. However, to my nose, Ungaro is softer and more flattering, while Joop comes across louder and more shrill, being even more tied to the trends of the 80s. It's a pity that the house of Ungaro no longer offers this fragrance and the classic Senso. Only Diva has survived to this day.

Together with Diva, the two classics from Emanuel Ungaro. Floral scent with a very nice base. Wouldn't be my fragrance today, but back then.

A classic from the seventies, but it was already too sweet and heavy for me back then. I have to admit, though, it makes quite a statement.
