Peppermint milkshakes and tree bark
The makings of a peppermint vanilla gourmand were shaken out of bed and flung, half-asleep, into a birch grove on a frosty winter morning. Named after the lord of winter in Russian fairy tales, it’s a winterized, minty vanilla with all of the symbolic bite of cold air and bare trees.
The vanilla leans sweet throughout, but in a way that keeps it on the far outer perimeters of gourmand territory. Like the weird but chill hermit at the edge of the forest that borders Gourmand Land. Nutmeg and black pepper give it a bold, spicy edge in the opening. It’s woody in a way that feels very earthy, like sheets of birch bark peeled and left on the ground for the snow to bury.
Fantôme excels at one of my favorite perfume categories — weird vanillas. They have a knack for painting vanilla into these unusual, atmospheric vignettes. Morozko has been tiding me over during a time when I want something sweeter, but not overtly gourmand.
