Nature-Cultivated Sophistication
Biostore fragrances unfortunately carry - not always without reason - a certain stigma of not representing any "real" haute perfumerie, but merely being a product that has splashed over from esotericism and aromatherapy (for some, the latter is the former) for do-gooders whose aesthetic needs are satisfied by health clogs, spelt biscuits, and synthetic meditation Muzak. Setting aside how much the organic sector has since stylized itself, it was quite bold of Florascent, whose brand image is rather historically elegant, to choose this distribution channel instead of positioning itself in the "niche" market. Well, Roland Tentunian, the head and perfumer of the manufactory based in Karlsruhe since 2000, must have his reasons. I know the products from the Hess Natur clothing store and from organic mail-order houses, as well as manufactum, and since I have a penchant for natural perfumes, I have always been interested in sniffing through the quite large portfolio whenever the opportunity arose.
Most compositions did not completely thrill me, but Regia and Vetyver left a lasting impression, and I happily snagged the latter on the bay. I have a weakness for men’s fragrances with subtle rose geranium notes, and not only this ingredient makes Vetyver a veritable over-classic "cologne pour l'homme": it is a gentleman of the old school from head to toe, but without any synthetic support corset, culture meets nature, so to speak, and that harmonizes excellently. The juicy-bitter grapefruit note harmonizes with the spiciness of the bay rum (the once ubiquitous Caribbean classic of men’s toiletries in England and the USA), which seamlessly connects to clove and the ginger-like galangal (spice lily, now known in Thai and Vietnamese cuisine). The geranium and other wood notes (hints of cedar and sandalwood?) round it off, nothing more. A classic dry-nutty vetiver note forms the goal of the fragrance development, which is entirely committed to understatement, in which the fundamental principle of natural perfume and classic male sophistication happily unite once again. Florascent Vetyver is absolutely coherent and is highly recommended in its spicy-woody traditionality and exceptional quality for noble suit wearers by conviction and other lovers of the beautiful sides of vintage masculinity.
