Fruu Tönnis or "the Problem with the Cordt"
*this headline was clumsily put together without solid Low German knowledge*
So, Frau Tonis presents us with a new little fragrance. In December. Red Cordt... mhh red and Christmas and blood orange fits, and what on earth could 'Cordt' be? red cord (fabric)? chord? Leo and Google Translator are letting me down. So, expectation: festive woody sitting in a cozy blanket (Tonka) munching on a few pomelos, it’s cold outside... something like that...
Hahaaa...! Far from it.
Thesis 1: Frau Tonis must have decided that in good old Germany it’s too cold for me in winter, I’m off to work remotely in Australia.
Thesis 2: Frau Tonis isn’t great with deadlines and precise scheduling, or Sophie-Luisa and Finn-Luca from the marketing team just didn’t get their act together in time. Actually, this thing was supposed to come out in summer...
Because this bergamot-blood orange opening is summery, fresh, zesty, and more "pool party with little umbrellas" than "peeling oranges in a wool blanket." No cleaning product associations, not too sour, definitely not sweet! I don’t explicitly perceive pepper as the only pyramid note.
A little mint is chopped into the cocktail, more for the look than for the taste, a bit of green is quite nice. And then we grab the glass, sit down on the sun-warmed wooden bench, and enjoy slurping away, glad that we are NOT sitting in dark Germany at 5°C. Oh right, unfortunately we are, okay, then we close our eyes, sniff at our wrist, and look forward to the upcoming summer vacation that is still far too distant.
And this little spot is so cozy, we’ll stay here for quite a while (about 2-4 hours) and enjoy this light, yet well-perceptible scent in its dry, woody glory with a hint of Tonka. Our neighbor might catch a delicate whiff when reaching for the drink, but it definitely doesn’t qualify as a large-scale mosquito repellent (aka sillage is absolutely socially acceptable and rather close to the person). Perfect!
№ 27 Red Cordt is a wonderful fresh, primarily woody scent with a fresh citrus opening and, in my opinion, absolutely unisex. Moreover, I see it more for the warm season, maybe spring/autumn as well, but not in the damp cold winter...
Just to give you a few similarly structured fragrances (in a similar style! not necessarily smelling super similar!): "Cedrus | Chloé", "Un Jardin à Cythère | Hermès" or Desert Dawn
If someone could enlighten me about this ominous "Cordt," I would be grateful. Maybe it’s a homage to a Mr. Cordt, whose favorite color is red and who is the teenage crush of Frau Tonis? And she moved to Australia because of him? ...
