Till Twilight
I had a review on this fragrance I deleted. Honestly the other reviewers do it much more justice than I ever will. However, I notice a trend that I want to buck, for others using reviews to make a decision to try this or not. Most of the reviewers are male. I can see why that is, but this perfume is for a woman too. Often, I see terms about a perfume that "leans male" but often with a caveat that it could be for a woman if they are bold enough to wear it. I don't think that is the case here, or I don't want that to be the case- I am not sure which scenario is occurring. Bold is not required in my opinion.

When I first tested this fragrance, it was in my face; and I was not sure in a good way. After sitting with it and then buying the bottle, it has its place in my collection. It is absolutely one of my favorites. For me, this fragrance conveys a cold night in the woods a bit away from a group of people huddled by a fire, but the smoke is still there while the warmth is mostly missing. I have cocoa in my cup, looking up at the stars while having a long, deep discussion with someone I am enjoying getting to know on a level much deeper than pleasantries. It's the earth in all it's cold beauty infused with plenty wafts of smoke and perfect refined cocoa drifting by. It's comforting in a way that the notes read on a screen simply don't convey.

It's not "pretty girl". It is not even "girl". And unfortunately, it is not for everyone. I am used to a perfume not being for everyone as I am generally that "everyone". For the women looking at reviews and wondering if this is too masculine to try, do yourself a favor and try it. I feel like I have found my nice little comfortable spot in the universe, observing it in the black of night, when I have this fragrance on.

An addictive cocoa, vanilla, leather scent
Estrella de la Mañana, which apparently means Morning Star, opens with a gorgeous burst of creamy, cocoa and vanilla. I absolutely love the opening! As the scent dries down I get a strong leather which dominates the scent, while the cocoa is very much in the background. Had it stayed as a cocoa & vanilla, even with just a hint of leather, I’d have purchased a full bottle instantly! If it had been available as a 30ml, I would also have bought it. I’m just not a leather fan, and while it isn’t listed as one of the notes I definitely smell it.

This scent to me is exactly as though I am wearing a new leather jacket and drinking a hot cup of sugary cocoa. It actually reminds me of my favourite uncle who smoked and always wore a leather jacket. It’s a comforting scent for me. I do really love this fragrance and find it almost quite addictive for that reason, but the strength of leather i pick up on puts me off wanting to wear it personally. If you’re a female and enjoy leather scents, this really is gorgeous.

Superhuman, sterile, anti-gourmand
Estrella de la Mañana is one of three 100ml extraits released by Une Nuit Nomade, just in time for the holiday season. Perhaps somewhat infuriating is that the brand insists on selling only 100ml bottles–a trend we’ve already seen with Matiere Premiere’s extrait collection, which was extremely disappointing to me. Perhaps what offers Une Nuit Nomade mercy is that the scents themselves are novel, original, save for Jardins de Misfah Extrait de Parfum, which is a revisiting of a previous fragrance from Une Nuit Nomade’s collection.

And perhaps this particular scent is worthy of your consideration. The brand repeatedly claims that this is the most daring, boundary-pushing scent of their collection so far. On their Instagram posts you can observe musings of how the fragrance itself is truly “niche” and divisive. Perhaps I don’t fully subscribe to this conclusion, but the scent itself is something worth examining.

You might, as I did, view the notes as a retelling of Patchouli 24 Eau de Parfum, which indeed included similar resinous notes mingled with smoky birch tar on a base of sticky, dark vanilla. This is partially true, but from a brand perspective somewhat redundant as Ménardo already revisited this fantastic formulation with Memory Motel, one of the brand’s standout scents.

Instead, we need to first examine the birch note at the top of this formula. Ménardo in her vision utilised something meaty, charred, akin to her formulation for Gaiac 10. Di Marino provides something completely different here: acrid, acidic, but otherwise sterile smokiness. If we think of the smoky facet as various interpretations of leather, we’d place Di Marino’s on the end of the spectrum with other acidic, sterile leathers like Tuscan Leather Eau de Parfum, or Eau Rihla Eau de Parfum.

This isn’t to say that this fragrance is a sibling to these scents, but more to demonstrate that its smokiness transcends the typical “meaty”, biological aspects. And let’s go even further: I would argue that there isn’t any “bonfire” aspect present, like the defining feature in Black Comme des Garçons. Smoky notes are typically grounded in earthy nuances: patchouli or woody notes or ambers or resins. But the benzoin here is sheer and crystalline, and the cocoa note is bleached of any dirt or impurities.

Indeed, the cocoa note is the real star here: Dutch processed, dark, bitter. Have you ever stuck your nose in a tin of high quality cocoa nibs, or very dark baking cocoa? That scent lies as the backdrop. It melds and melts into the birch note to provide something almost… fruity? Cherries, perhaps, but not the actual fruit, but more a veneer constructed by the tart and bitter notes of the birch and cocoa. It’s perhaps something you can also observe in smelling or tasting really dark chocolate: the bitter, acidic nature of cocoa covers every corner of your palate, saturates it, and results in a taste that is tart, fruity, orange-like. Une Nuit Nomade references this note as a “black cocoa powder”. Black is correct, gunpowder-like and charred. Bitter to oblivion.

Though I have not smelled Dark, I’d imagine that these fragrances act as cousins or siblings in their executions. Though I would hedge my bets that this fragrance is much more austere, reserved and colder. Primarily due to its cleanliness, its sterility and superhuman strength (something that also deserves mention, not that I am one that cares about longevity or sillage these days: extreme on all fronts).

And this is ultimately what I congratulate Di Marino on–not for creating something “niche” or divisive, but for constructing a scent with a clear vision of what it hopes to achieve. A heavenly, superhuman smoky scent. An anti-gourmand (you may have noticed the lack of mention of vanilla, which the brand describes as “a black vanilla pod, with its heart cut out and consumed in the burning hearth of a fireplace”. I neglected this aspect as I feel like it’s misleading–many people look at “vanilla” and assume something sweetened and gourmand [see: "Vanilla Haze | Fugazzi", "Vanilla | 28 | Kayali", Vanilla Diorama, etc.] but I would urge people to observe this fragrance as a relative to something like Deep Dark Vanilla instead: tarry, muck-coloured and not very sweet).

Give it a try.

Dark cocoa and smoky birch note
I'm greeted by a dark, powdery and slightly cocoa backed by vanilla. It's sweet without being too over the top. I did get some kind of leathery facet in the beginning even though it doesn't seem to be listed in the notes. A velvety, dark leather that pairs very well with the powdery cocoa and the sweet vanilla. Adds some darkness to the scent. As it moves on, I start getting plenty of warmth and the birch note starts to come up. At first, it's woody, but as it moves on the smoky facet starts to appear and crush everything under it. I can still smell a struggling, sweet vanilla underneath, but the smoky birch note barely leaves anything else room to breath. Somewhere in the drydown the benzoin note starts to stir, diffusing its resinous warmth and accompanying the smoky birch up until the end.

I will say I find this fragrance masterfully well done even though the smoky birch drydown at the end became overpowering. The first few hours of this fragrance were elegant and refined. This is clearly an inventive, well-thought out fragrance that stands out among the crowd. I'm very awed by Une Nuit Nomade as a brand right now, even though this is only the second one I've tried. I'm pretty hyped to try out my other Legends samples. This one won't be making it to my collection due to the smoky birch drydown, but this might be due to skin chemistry and personal preference more than a fault to the perfume. I do highly suggest you try it out though!

Estrella de la Manana by Une Nuit Nomade
I’ll start off by saying this is very different from what the notes suggest — which isn't a bad thing for me, but it might not be the same for you. It starts off with a blast of creamy cocoa, followed by a burning birch note that’s absolutely beautiful and unexpected. The scent doesn't evolve much, but it does what it does quite well. Honestly, a good release from UNN. Also, the presentation is very beautiful.

Like a brownie baked on imperial stout, generous on buttery, smoky cocoa. Treading the line between deeply gourmand and smoky resins.

Cherry-tinged smokiness from a distance. Dark, velvety cocoa powder up close. Delightfully unsweetened, balanced. The standout of the three.

Realistic cocoa powder, turn into smokey birch. Very dried and intoxicating (in a good way).

I appreciate the artistry, I do, but this is obnoxiously smoky. Darkest dark cacao, a smoker's couch. Nostalgic (derogatory)

Beautiful, dark, cocoa backed by vanilla. Morphs into a smoky, spiced woody fragrance with remnants of what it was in the beginning.

I get a very smoky, slightly powdery vanilla scent. Unfortunately for me, the smokiness is overpowering. It clings to skin for hours.

I wish I could have this leathery, smoky, chocolate bliss bottle. But on my skin, there's a nasty aspect of rusty metal.
