quiet quality
I wouldn't necessarily have thought to try this unobtrusively lovely scent based on its listed notes (which are common), its availability (which is not wide), or its reviews (are there any?). But I had the good fortune to be sniffing around Jovoy Paris and liked this one enough to ask for a sample.

Grapefruit, vetiver, and cedar are all available in essential oils, and surely some amateur mixers of essential oils have put them together (maybe I have, actually?). But Darwin is more than that. It crosses the line between essential oil mixing to perfumery quite easily. Darwin is fresh without being all about citrus - the vetiver is more dominant than the grapefruit, giving a sense of spaciousness and earthiness. (Vetiver tends to make me think of wide-open land and bright gray skies.) It's absolutely linear but is so pleasant one doesn't need development. It's lovely on me, but I think it would be a go-to scent for an adult man who is sophisticated but not pretentious. He could wear it when the weather was too hot for PG Coze or Rochas Man, or if he wanted a break from Terre d'Hermes or Encre Noir. Fueguia 1833 is based in Buenos Aires, far from the traditional centers of perfume, and I look forward to it getting wider distribution and attention.

Scotland of the South
No, I have not been to Patagonia. But I remember that I owned a backpack that bore that name: Patagonia, the distant dream destination of every trekking fan. However, the backpack only accompanied me to Scotland. Not to be underestimated.

There is a fragrance that, for me, has captured the Scottish Highlands, the barren islands, the wild sea, and the clear water in a bottle: “Special Reserve Vetiver” from the Scottish small manufacturer “Castle Forbes.” And indeed, the “Darwin” clearly has the same DNA: The scent of freedom, the backpack with the essentials on my back, exposed to surprising weather changes, salty spray, and a radiant sky, clear colors until reaching the next bank of fog.

The opening is dominated by vetiver, fresh and green. Then, bitter grapefruit joins in, adding a bright note to the herbal vetiver. I close my eyes and a luminous, breathtakingly green-barren landscape unfolds before me. I smell water and wind. As the vetiver slowly recedes, the bitter base fruitiness of the fragrance is underpinned by dark wood tones, beautifully warm and enveloping. Overall, a very distinctive, masculine “natural scent” that, despite all its bitterness, tempts one to indulge and rave. However, my enthusiasm is somewhat dampened by its rather undramatic sillage.

However, I was taken aback when I researched the price of this wonderful water. What was once pleasant quickly turned into a cold shudder. And I realized that it will still only be enough for Scotland. Not to be underestimated.

Patagonia in a Bottle
A segment of our grand journey at the beginning of the year also took us to Tierra del Fuego, the southern part of Patagonia. This landscape impressed me even more than the islands of the South Seas, as I couldn't imagine much about it compared to Tahiti, Fiji & Co.

Ushuaia, which claims to be the southernmost city in the world, has now become a starting point for hardcore trekking tourists, which is not surprising given the magnificent nature. Unlike Scandinavia, on the other side of the globe, there is hardly any snow here in winter except in the Andes, but there are plenty of damp, cold storms. This is clearly visible, as there are almost no straight-growing street trees. The vegetation is lush, thanks to the cold but always humid air, more than I ever expected. A trip to the Tierra del Fuego National Park left us astonished at the sight of giant ferns, lichens hanging from trees like spider webs, and deciduous trees that we had never seen in Europe. We were there in the summer in Tierra del Fuego, yet I could still comfortably wear my thick down jacket. After all, Ushuaia is also a port from which Antarctic ships set sail, and Cape Horn is just around the corner by local standards. It was wonderful to experience this, but I wouldn't want to live there. Weekly storms are not my world.

The area is, of course, sparsely populated, and even in the national parks, you hardly encounter anyone except for the occasional tour bus from a cruise ship. A few hardy locals had set up their camping tents by a beautifully situated lake, but I wouldn't have wanted to swap places with them. On the other hand, this landscape radiates a sublime tranquility, not least because the snow-capped mountains form the backdrop. Here, even the most talkative members of the travel group fell silent.

What does this have to do with the fragrance Darwin? Well, when I got to know the perfume thanks to a sample, the atmosphere of this landscape immediately formed in my mind's eye. On one hand, the magnificent nature in the national park, on the other hand, the glaciers and the calm, almost black water in the Strait of Magellan and the Beagle Channel. Its name, of course, does not come from the dog breed, but from the name of the ship with which Charles Darwin traveled to this part of the world. One can only guess the hardships he faced back then.

As calm and expressive as the landscape, so is Darwin by Fueguia. Cool and fresh is the opening, and strong-herbaceous is the theme of the fragrance. Gray-green but clear and clean, this is how the scent develops on the skin. The grapefruit does not come across as juicy-summery but instead gives the vetiver a zesty and cool freshness, while the cedarwood defines the base. Fueguia is labeled unisex, and in summer I would certainly enjoy a spritz now and then. However, the scent has nothing feminine for my nose and, in my opinion, belongs on men's skin. That is where it will end up, as you won't find it in my collection. Darwin will be the Christmas gift for my brother, who inspired and accompanied me on this journey. I hope he will also find Patagonia in a bottle.

Not a perfume, a true scent! Reminiscent of nature, lichens, mosses, and wind-swept vegetation. Herbal, spicy, fresh, and natural. Subtle.

Bright green-yellow sunrise: a vetiver that is woody, juicy-fruity, but also green; with sweet base nuances.

Three gracefully bold, distinctly noble natural beauties in harmony: light-filled cedar, buttery soft vetiver, green grapefruit. Wonderful.

Charles collects zesty citrus fruits + finely spicy woods. It builds a soft bed from the gentlest vetiver grass. Harmonious + natural.

A solid fresh-spicy wood scent.
Vetiver is hardly noticeable.
Natural, masculine, clean, and well-groomed.

Charles Darwin showed the way. An authentic citrus-vetiver mix straight from nature. A wonderfully intense scent with power.

A nice, medium Vetiver, but it suffers from its weakness, the weakness. You can get that with 1/3 of the amount through others ...
