If you wish to skip my small yap prior to the fragrance, skip to paragraph 5.
Often times in this hobby of ours we lose sight of the intrinsic value of what we are doing. We reduce things down to numbers, quantitative functions of execution, longevity, blending, and scent profile. This approach, while useful for reviews of the thousands of clicks that pass by
Imagination,
Sauvage Elixir,
Delina Eau de Parfum or
Goddess Eau de Parfum in the commercial space, lacks *exactly* what I believe separates our addiction from the simple consumers trying to smell good: sensations. Sometimes a scent touches you and leaves a true mark. In collingual speak, it 'alters your brain chemistry,' and lets you perceive either new things or a new light.
Nocturna does exactly that to me. It's art in the purest form, acting in a way to elicit emotions, something that is exclusive to humankind and one of our most important characteristics. Connecting those elicitations is, especially in our homogenizing age, is important. It keeps us human.
Fueguia as a brand was one of those Houses that, to the entry-level fragrance appreciator, comes off as, for lack of a better term, a foo-foo House that charges exorbierent prices for relatively simplistic fragrances. They justify it because they utilise only natural ingredients harvested in small limited batches. They describe their ethos as: "Embracing the concept of ethnobotanical perfumery, Fueguia combines scientific research with artistic exploration to create evocative, sustainable, and deeply personal scents. Committed to artisanal craftsmanship and environmental preservation, Fueguia continually pushes the boundaries of fragrance innovation while honoring the delicate balance of nature," and to the unbaptised nose, it seems rather snobbish doesn't it? Well, you don't get far in the deeper layers of fragrances by writing things off based on vibe, you gotta get YOUR nose on it. So, while in New York City, the opportunity presented itself for me to enter the alchemist's den known as their boutique,
And what an experience it was, one that justifies more than one visit. Exploring the varieties of the wheel that Fueguia arranges their boutiques in was truly a privilege for the olfactorally obsessed. Upon reaching my favorite category, ambers, I started with
Alhambra Perfume Dunas de un Cuerpo Perfume and
Ámbar de los Andes Perfume , all of which were quite fascinating, but when my nose settled on the amber | gourmand
Nocturna I felt everything else open up. Instantaneously I applied it to skin and wore it around the city, catching whiffs of what would become an obsession that would continue through the next week. After getting my hands on a full bottle as a new batch came in stock, wearing it a vast number of times, I can confidently approach this review of my new favorite scent:
Nocturna This will be referring to the I-XXVI batch.
Nocturna is a frighteningly simple fragrance based solely on the melodia and the pyramid Fueguia provide to us. It's an ambergris, patchouli, and vanilla fragrance in that order to my nose. But each of these naturals are allowed to do what they are naturally gifted to do. As such, I don't refer to this pyramid often when I wear the fragrance or as I sit here writing this review, as they don't paint a proper picture of the experience. Instead, I will tell you what this fragrance makes me feel. The sensations it elicits.
Nocturna is warmth embodied in a scent. The feeling of walking into your room at the end of a long work day, where you bury your head into your pillow, the tension ebbing away. There's something familiar, something comforting in such a personal way that's buried in your subconscious when you wear this fragrance. Yet there's a contrast present. An unfamiliar draw that pulls you forward into the next day. The feeling of breaking out of the hum-drum of our everyday lives. That one time you head somewhere you remember, but instead of following the route, you take your own turns and use your intuition to find your way. You take in all the new details, different homes, trees, curves in the road, clearings where you can see the whole sky. Your skin shimmers slightly in the sunlight with a slight note of salt. All those sensations blur together into that trip that feels novel, even with a regular destination.
If I were to put a sound to this fragrance, 'Chasing Cars' by Snow Patrol feels apt. Allow yourself to take things slow, appreciate the finery with what and who you love. Don't let the rigors of the world trap you in regiments and conformity. Feel that comfort of your soft pillow. Take that novel route home. Lean in for that kiss. You'll see the whole world and sky open up to you. Warm, inviting, and ever-changing. Ever human.
