On the Wrong Track
One of the cutest Hägar comics for me is the one where Dr. Zook holds a test tube in his hand and decides to name the freshly developed brew after the first person he encounters outside - and that is a guy named…Martini.

And that brings us to the topic: Engaging with this extraordinarily quirky rose fragrance has left me with quite a few question marks and one or two surprises. The wine-like note of the opening reminds me within seconds of - of course - Martini. That’s why I thought of it. Soon, however, it takes on more of a Marsala sauce vibe with fig-like nuances. It’s a strange rose scent. Time to do some reading.

The manufacturer speaks of Rosa alba instead of Centifolia. Aha. Now, my specimen, a “Rosa alba suaveolens,” has of course long since bloomed for this year. The name addition at the end means “sweet-scented.” Well, “sweet” is relative when it comes to roses - but it certainly doesn’t smell like Marsala, says my olfactory memory. I will check this again next year. My Damask rose, occasionally sorted among the Portland roses as “Rose de Resht,” does bloom now and then, even into the fall, but it doesn’t smell like Italian sweet wine either. I’m afraid this matter must remain unresolved for the moment.

Additionally, there’s a mystery surrounding a possibly wood-like note. The supplier explicitly mentions “Patagonian Rose.” However, this apparently refers to a specific type of rosewood. I haven’t found much about it, but there seems to be no flower called “Patagonian Rose.” A thought of wood fits the behavior of the scent or at least can be inferred from it. Aha, have I, in my confusion, landed on the wrong track, so to speak?

My favorite colleague also diagnosed tea. I can’t quite follow that scent-wise, but to further speculate, I’ll throw the so-called tea roses into the mix, regarding which various explanations for the origin of the name are circulating. One of them is that the flowers supposedly smell like tea. I don’t have a tea rose in my collection, so I can’t say for sure.

Anyway, it smells rather ambiguously of rose. For hours, into the afternoon, I find the scent - to put it precisely - even more creamy-fruity-sweet than floral. Almost a borderline gourmand on the threshold of liqueur. It should be clarified that this may be found quite successful in its consistently reduced, unwavering manner; it’s just not floral.

Only in the evening does the weight shift more towards what is generally considered rose scent. A dark, lush, and voluminous variant. Nevertheless, a wine-like undertone remains. And with it, my perplexity.

I thank the Robin for the sample.

Rose of all Roses
My expectations were not particularly high when it came to the rose named Juan Manuel. But once I sprayed it on, I found myself immediately in a magical garden, with dark red, almost black roses blooming everywhere, exuding a captivating scent like no other.

Julián Bedel has taken the art of perfumery concerning roses to the next level with this rose. For me, this rose stands on the same level as Tauer's PHI, Rosine's Rose d'Argent, Guerlain's Rose Barbare, and similar fragrances.

This Fueguia scent also has - like Elogio de la Sombra - something mysterious, mystical, and dark.

It is exceptionally lush, with a strong sillage, allowing for more than good projection, so this rose is absolutely not for rose novices. The dark rose, almost black blooms with velvety petals are fully blossomed and emit a captivating scent, but the pink pepper is also distinctly noticeable. It ensures that this rose does not become too sweet.

I completely agree with Turandot that this is NOT a girly scent. No light rose volatility with icing sugar!

However, I do not believe that this is a masculine scent, even though it carries a man's name. I would wear this rose with pride and joy, enjoy it, and let myself be enchanted by it again and again.

After wearing it for a while, I can perceive a slight smokiness on the skin, which is likely responsible for the somewhat mystical and dark impression it gives. Woods probably also play a role in the base.

Unfortunately, the Fueguia catalog does not provide any pyramids; it merely describes the scent impression with three notes each. The first represents the strongest impression, the second for a weaker one, and the third for the weakest impression. Thus, we are unfortunately not told which supporting notes make this rose so enchanting.

Here, the higher price range is justified - see Une Rose or Rose Barbare, which are sometimes even more expensive. The procurement is not really complicated, but unfortunately, very high shipping costs arise. To avoid these, one would have to buy fragrances worth €250...

Fueguia - this brand is definitely one to remember. It holds a surprise or two for us spoiled Europeans!

Roses Without Pretense
There are as many rose scents as there are grains of sand on the beach. Sometimes playful and romantic, sometimes elegant and opulent, and then again combined with woods or even oud and patchouli. Our gentlemen also have no problem wearing rose scents, although the line between masculine-compatible and feminine presentation can sometimes be quite thin.

When I read the pyramid of Juan Manuel, my expectations were not particularly high. The Damask rose in harmony with the Centifolia, that seems pretty straightforward-will there be anything else? In any case, I wasn't particularly curious about the sample at first.

Juan Manuel is indeed a masculine rose scent. Nothing is girlish, nor is it elegantly feminine. I also believe that apart from the rose and the pink pepper, which gives the fragrance a very energetic feel, nothing else has been used. The scent is serious, cool, and opens clean and floral-fresh. Throughout its development, the rose fluidum runs through, which strikes me as directly powerful here. I can imagine that some ladies might find the scent too masculine. It has pep and is expressive, and I would almost say robust.

As it develops, I do believe I recognize notes that were not disclosed. After a while on the skin, I also think I discover a base of vetiver or cedar. Very subtle and without distorting the rose theme. The herbaceous-spicy aroma of the pink pepper also runs through the entire progression of the perfume.

If Juan Manuel were not somewhat cumbersome to obtain and also quite pricey, it would definitely be a candidate for my wish list.

Powdery, floury rose that takes my breath away a bit. Smells to me like a rose deodorant sprayed in a dusty sawmill.

Sometimes light and fruity-sweet, then warm, raisin-like rose from the rum pot. Fascinating and really great. Unfortunately, too little sillage.

You get a beautiful, fully bloomed rose, a bit fruity, rather dark, peppery. Everything's there - but not my dream rose.

As a light green floral scent, it's pleasant, but as a rose, it's thin.

Exciting + unusual, but not for me. Woody rose - very spicy, but not masculine. Fresh without being fresh. Slightly sweet.

I love rose scents. This one is a darker, very spicy rose fragrance. Definitely has a peppery note. The base adds incense.

Ahem, raw food in the rose garden? - Smells better than it sounds.
Unconventional going-out scent. Uplifting, but also demanding.
