Magical Memories Grounded in Grass
The original Gap grass scent was the first time in my life I had ever encountered a fragrance that reproduced this ubiquitous scent of childhood memory: Laying on a freshly cut lawn in the summer, in the shade, hearing the slight breeze through the leaves of the trees, looking up at a bright blue sky watching the amazing shapes of clouds as they pass overhead. It was the scent of everything being possible, of optimism, safety, and adventure all at once.

Nothing before or since has quite captured that sense memory for me. And I personally believe this is why the fragrance is remembered and revered with such passion by those of us who experienced it. Both because it was our first encounter with that scent captured in a bottle, and also because it has been discontinued. This means we are left only with the memory, not the true comparison side by side with other scents.

I had this fragrance in the 90s in a few forms, and used it daily. The EdT and the shower gel based on the fragrance were identical. Much like other iconic 90s scents (Body Shop's original Mango, for example), the scent has never again appeared in anything close to the original form. I've tried all of the grass fragrances I could find, and the closest has been Lush's Grass fragrance in the shower gel formulation. When used in the shower the Lush Grass fragrance often came very close the experience of the Gap EdT and shower gel. It opened up in a way that the Lush Grass does not when used as a perfume, making it lighter and closer. But generally the Lush fragrance, while closest to the Gap original, still has too much depth, it is too heavy, too sweet, and slightly more mulch-like (a bit too hot and dry) than the clean and green, but not aquatic, scent of fresh cut grass.

If the Grass fragrance still existed today I suspect that in light of everything we have encountered in the fragrance world since it was released we would no longer find it to be quite so magical. Very pleasant, comforting, and wonderful, but not the same kind of magic. That sort of magic happens once, and every encounter we have after that is a reference to that memory. The memory of the first mango, or first time smelling certain flowers in reality - like orange or jasmine in particular. Those memories are markers, touchtones we experience things in reference to forever after, they set a context, they are the foundations of our fragrance tastes.

That doesn't mean I wouldn't pick it up if I came across it, in any form. Just as I continue to pick up original formulation Mango body butter from the body shop whenever I find it, since they still hold that discontinued magical fragrance that otherwise only exists in my mind.

Green grass, green grass under my feet...
Why, why, why on earth has this wonderful GAP been discontinued???!! Thanks to Hasi, I am at least now in possession of a decant. *happy*

Grass is the ultimate summer-sun-meadow scent. Juicy-green, so juicy that it almost drips from the keyboard. Here, the motto is: Green, greener, greenest. It is exactly THE scent you smell when grass is being mowed somewhere (please ignore the gasoline smell of the lawnmower *lol*). Or when hay is being harvested somewhere. Because along with the typical grass scent, there is also a hint of spice. Just like fresh mountain herbs - wonderful. It doesn't change much, it remains pretty much the same as at the beginning.

As mentioned, it has unfortunately been discontinued and is only available online at exorbitant prices. It's a shame that GAP fragrances always seem to have such a short lifespan, because with a few exceptions, they are simply delightful scents. The same sad story applies to "Washed Cotton #784." And "Close" is about to continue this sad series (I've already hoarded a bit of that). All that's left is the hope that GAP will eventually launch another - at least for me - great fragrance. Hope dies last, as they say. ;-)

@Hasi: Oh yes, the "green banana note"... I didn't perceive it again yesterday when spraying. However, I can definitely smell it when I sniff the spray nozzle. But only there, definitely not on my skin. For me, it remains fresh-cut grass and mountain herbs.

It Doesn't Get Greener!
Whether my comment is helpful, I don't know. I actually like green scents, influenced by my mother, who would prefer to rub herself with freshly picked herbs (she is a pharmacist). Grass is a fragrance that truly smells like freshly cut grass, green-green-green, juicy fresh. However, the problem is that my skin chemistry somehow ruins the scent. Test on a cotton pad: I was blown away, simply dreamy. Test on the skin: The scent somehow becomes,...I don't know... As if the spindle of the lawn mower is stuck because the grass hasn't been mowed for too long, and now you have to clean out the good part at the bottom to keep mowing. I don't even dare to write,...somehow musty.

I now associate the scent with tedious gardening work: UNFORTUNATELY! On the cotton pad, it was amazing,...I'm going to peel my skin off,...maybe then I can wear it.

Therefore, the rating is out.

The Lawnmower Man
With his great reviews & enormous passion for fragrances for years, robes08 on YouTube takes on something like an Apicius for me. I had GAP - Grass in mind for years, as he always mentioned it in his top summer lists or even casually when discussing recommendable mall scents. Unfortunately, it was discontinued years ago & is now super rare to find. Luckily/at least I managed to get the body spray, which I base my test on here - which should be legitimate, as the actual scent likely smells almost the same, just a bit more durable & stronger.

But even the body mist is a great scent & an absolute insider tip when it comes to green fragrances. Perhaps the simplest scent in my collection & yet a feast for every hobby gardener. The most authentic grass on the market. Unfortunately, no more :(. It smells like excellent, juicy, freshly cut, watered & sun-kissed grass - nothing more, nothing less. If that is too little for someone, then that is too little. I like & appreciate it very much, as does my girlfriend. Hardly any scent smells fresher, more natural & juicier according to her. It is ozonic & airy, yet without the scratchiness or synthetics of many other scents that tried to capture grass or sunshine (e.g. Bond No. 9). Bright, friendly & more natural than most niche fragrances - and that for just a few euros. Quite insane - one is happy to be green behind the ears ;). And of course, absolutely not an exclusively feminine scent - grass is just grass!

Bottle: great sprayer, simple (plastic) bottle.
Sillage & Longevity: I have the scent as a body mist here & even if I add a bit for the perfume - extremely weak with a need for reapplication - 2-3 hours max.

Conclusion: awakens the gardener in you - the probably best GAP scent of all time & the simplest/best/most beautiful interpretation of grass. A delight in green!

Wolf in Sheep's Clothing
I can't deny it, I have a thing for green scents, even though my favorite color is light blue.
I happened to get a miniature in the form of a "deo spray" from GRASS, and that was it for me!
Unfortunately, this fragrance is no longer available here or is only sold in the USA (eBay).

A fresh cut blend of ivy and crisp greens laced with soft musk.

So that's the description, and since I can "feel" perfumes more than I can "describe" them, I can't add anything more here. I'll leave that to the true experts here.

Although it is very long-lasting - the clothes still smell of it the next day - it is totally unobtrusive and light.
It's as if you showered with an incredibly fresh, green, slightly sweet grass-scented, creamy shower gel, and then also used the same body lotion.
A cucumber-like and for me also maritime scent. A "clean + pure" scent.
Yes, an innocence scent for the wicked among us ;-)

The only downside: The spray head is really bad. It produces a very thin stream, which I find rather unpleasant. However, I'm not sure if it was like that from the beginning or if something has broken.

---------------------------------------------------------------

Addendum July 2012:

Recently a friend asked if there was banana in it... and indeed, it smells like the peel when opening one of the less ripe bananas. The one where the peel is still very light yellow and has a lot of green in it. When you break it at the stem, this sweet-green scent escapes.

Recently acquired a newer bottle after not smelling it since the 90s. Very light and green. I remembered more of a freshly cut grass scent.

The original was a whole, entire freshly cut lawn in a bottle, so fresh and summery but unfortunately headache-inducing.

Yes, it’s definitely synthetic and not particularly refined, but sometimes it can just be simple and a bit quirky.

This grass is delicate, sweet, and somehow like artificial turf, but subtly pale. Coumarin in the base, too little freshness for me.

Baby is sitting in the garden, pulling at the grass and being fed baby food. I find that a bit strange.

We've now enhanced the artificial turf with a grass scent. Plus green bananas and occasionally the smell of freshly cut grass and a little flower.

On the skin, it smells of grass and slightly sweet like coumarin, like freshly mown hay. But very delicate and not long-lasting.

Günni is going to Carnival as a 'Green Banana' and is dousing himself with grass.
More of a gimmick. Typical GAP synthetic DNA. If it’s fun for you...
