It is a strange thing to see a queen frolicking barefoot. Your summer majesty on vacation. Otherwise, the stardust at the center of a rave.
She begins in medias res with a sharp blast of mandarin, sweetened just to the point of excess. To follow, a faint musk (absent in the eau de toilette) blossoms out with sprouting verdure. A background wash of fuzzy basil helps curb any claims of syrupy sweetness, but the green acquiesces quickly, and citrus comes back just as enticing as before.

I have to go out when wearing this; the warmth from the sun activates sporadic bursts of orange blossom. The spices—sandalwood and anise—only appear in the last hour or so of performance: a warm goodnight kiss to a full summer's day. I admit, she has not been a hit with my companions, but perhaps that is because I haunt libraries and theatres. She belongs at the beach, at a festival, wherever people snort and aren't afraid to exhale. If you are interested in something fresher, more complex, more serene, do sample the eau de toilette.

A lovely upgrade from the OG
Ah, the Aqua Allegoria series! I have now added this one to my collection and I could not be more pleased with my first choice from this line. I had previously tested Aqua Allegoria Mandarine Basilic which I found exquisite but the longevity was abyssmal. I was hoping I could find a more amped up version in either the Forte version or the Harvest version. Unfortunately, the Harvest version has been OoS on Guerlain's website for awhile now (saw it too late) and so I had to turn my eyes towards the this one.

Juicy, tangy, tart, citrusy mandarin jump on my skin and greet me with a lovely fizzy aspect that lasts briefly on my skin. In the beginning, mandarin is clearly the star here. It's giving pleasant, upbeat vibes, a great start to a day. Basil is a little more subdued and fleeting in this interpretation, but I did smell a hint of green freshness. It's a bit more palatable for people who don't want to smell like an herb garden. Vanilla starts to mingle with the mandarin after about 30 minutes, lending a delicate sweetness and toning down the tart and juicy aspect. The scent becomes citrus and vanilla, almost like a delicate pastry. Sandalwood gives everything a nice warmth to it, like a setting sun caressing your skin. A woody aspect is present, but well-blended with the vanilla.

All in all it's exquisite. I would've loved a bigger projection, but I'm just really glad this one lingers a little longer on the skin. Beautiful for spring and summer, it fills a craving for citrus-forward scents. During colder weather, vanilla takes up more space, making this scent a little bit cozier. One day I might get my hands on the Harvest version, but until then, this one fits the bill quite lovingly!

Summery mandarin delight
The regular Mandarine Basilic is a little too fresh and citrusy for my tastes, but the Forte version is right up my alley. The wonderful Guerlain vanilla in the base really makes a difference! It's subtle, this is still a very fresh scent, but it warms up the fragrance so nicely.

At first this smells like mandarins and basil, just like the name suggests. The basil is very fleeting and less prominent than it is in the original, so this is wearable even if you're not much into herb garden kind of scents. Mandarin orange is the main star here, it's super fizzy and perfectly sweet, like a carbonated mandarin soda, but more high-end and less sugary. Lovely. And then the vanilla slowly comes in and makes everything soft, round and even a little creamy. There isn't enough vanilla to make this smell like a dessert of any kind, just the right amount to add some warmth and substance.

Despite the Forte label, this isn't a great performer, but I think it lasts a little longer than the original. It's also slightly more feminine leaning. And I noticed that it really blooms on hot days. In mild weather it's a nice citrus scent, but on really warm skin, the whole composition, including the base, unfolds its beauty.

Mandarin Creams Itself In
Who would have thought it, Guerlain designs its product range very diversely. Numerous target groups are addressed. Free according to the motto: there’s a lid for every pot.

That a mandarin harvest would turn out so meager, I would have expected less from the house.
Well, I just drew the short straw.

Sizzle!

For a few seconds - let’s generously say two minutes - an edible mandarin actually greets you. Nice and ripe, orange, and quite sweet.

23, 24, 25… Stop!

That was it with the fruity magic, the otherwise very beautiful citrus fruit shows its true, artificial face. Mandarin aroma from technical gastronomy shamelessly takes command.
But wait, a generous spoonful of blackcurrant jam sweetens the machinery nicely, as the scent has a long way to go and needs calories.

From the basil, I only get the listing, the honest herb must have caught the last-minute flight to Málaga and might send a postcard with a fragrant greeting.
This arrives quite late and somewhat battered and destroys itself after reading. Mission Impossible for fragrance enthusiasts!

What follows will be discussed by later generations as a characteristic of the 2020s.
Sweetest geranium evokes a Rose de Resht and fails miserably.
The infernal duo of orange blossom and vanilla joins the rose spectacle and creates the loud chord of this time.
Sweet, creamy, suffocating.
And, oh wonder, sandalwood in creamy form pretends to provide stability.
This chord can be found ubiquitously at every corner: jogging in the woods, brutal shopping in the pedestrian zone, slurping synthetic coffee wonders from cardboard cups with plastic lids, arguing with parking ticket distributors in no-parking zones, communication-hungry phones in waiting rooms. The list is long.

And long is also the longevity of the juice, not to mention the sillage. You are noticed thanks to the usual synthetics.

I can’t imagine enduring this suffocating cream for even a few minutes in summer temperatures. Add to that the heated tempers…

No, I will not warm up to this mandarin recommendation.

But luckily, Guerlain has very good fragrances in stock; it doesn’t always have to be something with mandarin and blackcurrant.

This time, I won’t offer any music suggestions. The soundtrack can be comfortably listened to on the usual "And the Best of Today" radio stations along with live streams.

Caution is advised.

Addendum!

Thanks to the perfectly fitting suggestion from FrauKirsche, I offer the "Mandarin-Mandarin" song by Kids Songs & Kati Breuer.
Come on kids, shake those hips!

Here to stay…
For quite some time now, I have truly been a fan of the bee bottle series from Guerlain.
The wonderfully beautiful bottles have captivated me.
In general, I like fresh, clear scents that put me in a good mood, and this line really offers some compositions that achieve that.
The only downside, as with many citrus freshies, is the lack of longevity.
I often layer the classic Aqua Allegoria Mandarine Basilic with Molecule 01, which not only slightly increases the longevity (or does Molecule 01 simply last longer on its own?!), but also adds more spice to the scent.
The new version is forte, meaning strong, where not only the spiciness of the basil comes out more, but the scent is also significantly more lasting. Even after a few hours, it is still clearly detectable.
Thanks to the rose, the fragrance remains soft and delicate.
In my opinion, it is a successful evolution of the original.
If I had to choose between the two, I would opt for the forte variant.

A slightly more jovial scent than the original Mandarine Basilic. The opening is sweeter, tangerine with a soft creamy vanilla in the base.

Smells like a pink grapefruit soda, that stays for a while but the total dry down smells like hair spray on me unfortunately.

Lovely juicy, tart mandarin with a fleeting basil note. The drydown is citrusy vanilla with sandalwood for added woody warmth.

Such a juicy realistic mandarin opening I love it! After a while it becomes soapy like shaving cream on my skin... such a shame :(

I like the punchier citrus and herb of the original more, but the light vanilla in this makes it a touch smoother and sweeter if that is what you want

Tested H2H with Orange Soleia. This is delightful but I prefer the mint of OS vs the basil here.

The original citrusy green with a sweet and creamy gloss finish. Unfortunate the tea was replaced, but the result’s still great nonetheless.
