WOOD SAGE & SEA SALT by Jo Malone
Wood Sage & Sea Salt opens with a brightly illuminated explosion of grapefruit. This grapefruit is happy, energetically awakening the senses and saturating them in sunshine. An exceptional way to start a beach inspired fragrance. So far, so good. A lively citrus can also bring to mind sensual tropical islands, dotted with palm trees, but certainly not the pebbly, chilly beaches of England that they are trying to evoke. As the fragrance progresses, the sharp citrus note mellows and a layer of herbal sage is conjured up. This adds a pleasant sweet and savory accord, not unlike the beginning to a fantastic marinade. Wait a minute, I think my trip to the beach just got hijacked to Italy. How about some English flora like sea kale, thrift, dune helleborine, alexanders or perhaps yellow whitlow grass. I’m thinking that “Wood Thrift and Sea Salt” might have been more interesting as well as a more regionally accurate concept for this English beach inspiration. While the smell of thrift might not be as intoxicating as the smell of sage, the pretense has conceptual context. Back to the fragrance at hand. Wood Sage & Sea Salt’s heart launches with the introduction of a blonde, sun-baked driftwood vibe. This wood is desiccated, aromatic and perfect for what one might experience beachside. An enticing fruity, savory blend layered with an intensely dry wood note does create intrigue. Once a bit of surf is added with sharp sea salt, it wraps up this interesting harmony. Last but not lease, ambrette seed gives the fragrance a slightly musky note, adding a bit of nature to this otherwise unoccupied beach. Wood Sage & Sea Salt’s light aromatic nature, diffusing and clarifying, offers a nicely rounded finish.

While I really enjoyed Wood Sage & Sea Salt, I think the ad campaign’s conceptual strategy is confusing. Many people are well-read enough or, if lucky, well-traveled enough to understand the concept of the English seaside. As we all know, grapefruit nor more grows in England that mangoes grow in northern Minnesota. Jo Malone’s English beach-themed fragrance seems to be a bit of a stretch at best. Speaking of stretches, sage on the English beachside. Is this idea not just another oxymoron in Wood Sage & Sea Salt’s personality? Enough of all of this nonsense, let’s just remove the word “English” from the concept. This would make Wood Sage & Sea Salt a more generalized beach experience instead. It might give this fragrance a more universally acceptable idea for anyone who’s ever been to any beach in their life.

Intriguing
A blind purchase. I imagined something like a skin smell, with a fresh, slightly citrusy, animalic and aromatic touch. But I didn't feel any of that. What I felt was a creamy, half-solar scent, with a fruity output that actually reminded me of the fig note that I have already felt in several perfumes.

Sometimes I notice the aromatic aspect mixed with a salty touch that reminds me of the smell of those big stones on the edge of the sea, wet and with seaweed on top. It is probably the most intriguing and difficult to describe perfume that I have known to date. Every moment I have a different experience / feeling.

I think it works best on milder days (on hot days it may be excessive). A fragrance inspired by the coast to perhaps bring joyful coastal memories on a closed day. I don't think his creaminess goes with sunny, hot days.

An intriguing perfume, which reminded me of something I already felt and could not find. It is neither salty nor sweet, sometimes it is aromatic, sometimes watery greenish, sometimes reminiscent of a moisturizing cream. I've edited this review about five times, because now I like it, sometimes I don't like it. Yesterday I was not enjoying it very much. Today I am in love. We'll see tomorrow...

A review
This fragrance I wore yesterday for the first time so share some thoughts I had on it so far. I had a replica of this fragrance from a different company awhile back and quite liked it, especially as a lighter fragrance for the day, so I wanted to try the real deal as I have started my fragrance journey.
"Composition of the new fragrance, just like its name suggests, is composed of ambrette seed, sea salt and sage, along with red algae and grapefruit. ‘This fragrance is different for me’ – says Christine Nagel, perfumer of the composition. She adds: ‘Sea air is mixed with salty and mineral texture of sand and stones. As the scent of driftwood it has natural and fresh sophistication. A complex combination of wood and sea is in its essence. It provides the feeling of freedom and natural spirit.’"
The other day I wrote about another scent, Wild Bluebell that Christine Nagel also created at Jo Malone and I quite liked it. This one was much different than that scent, which was nice to see the difference in accords formed between the two compositions, but the same perfumer.
Upon applying this, the first scent that you smell is what I would explain if you were walking through a grassy field with a sea breeze passing through. You definitely get the sage and a salty feel to it. Not a sweaty salty, but a sweet salty scent. It was really pleasant.
As quickly as the sea breeze comes, it leaves. The longevity of this fragrance is abysmal. I felt like i needed to reapply before even leaving my room. I am not one to over-apply fragrances, a 1-2 spray no matter what kind of person, but you could spray 10 of this fragrance and you wouldn't be overwhelmed, nor would it last any longer than before.
Overall I rate this a 5.8/10 purely off of price and longevity. If the longevity was better, this would be much higher on my list and most certainly a daily wear for me.

Childhood
Truly reminds me of my summers in brittany as a kid. It has the same smell as the peach tea we drank on the beach, that was a bit too warm because of the sun and also salty because of the remains of the sea on our lips after bathing. People on fragrantica pointed out a grapefruit note that I could definitely smell and I loved it. It smells clean, coastal and nice but definitely didn't last for long. I'd rather go to a beach during the summer and come back with that same smell.

Pleasant Cologne, fresh and sweet at the same time, minimally aquatic and moderately creamy. All notes in harmony. Sillage close to the skin

Really nice fruity salty sweet smell, that unfortunately has the performance of a rack store cheap fragrance.

Fresh without being too aquatic, with a gentle sweetness on me. It's a cologne, so its strength isn't great, but I deal because I love it.

Very pleasant aquatic freshie with a unique salty-musky-herbal scent. Definitely performs like a cologne and doesn't last long.

Fresh, herbal sage finely misted with salted pear juice. Abrasive minerality blunted by a watery sweetness and soft projection.

A cool, misty breeze of sea salt, sweet sage, and slight iodine sharpness - evoking true seawater, yet fades as quickly as the wind changes.
