Niche Rendition of A Classic
Let’s be honest. Duc de Vervins L’Extreme is not going to be winning any awards for originality. This scent profile has been done by drugstore cheapies such as Drakes Noir and Lomani Pour Homme, as well as Niche offerings such as Diptyque Eau de Minthe. Where Duc de Vervins sets itself apart is the price relative to the quality. I was able to grab a 100ml full presentation bottle for under $100 off of discounters. For the price, I got high quality juice that lasts a very long time and projects well. It is that classic shaving foam green fougere that we all know and love, but it has a noticeably good oak moss note. It reminded me a bit of the oak moss found in Mousse Illumine by Rogue Perfumery. Duc de Vervins also does not suffer from the synthetic or syrupy dry down that can be found in the new formulation of Drakkar Noir or to some extent, Lomani Pour Homme. It keeps a nice sharp lavender even in the deep dry down when it’s a skin scent.

My only complaint about this fragrance is the bottle. I don’t mind the old green and gold design, but the gold cladding on the bottle I just really cheap plastic. This goes for the cap as well. The atomizer is also horrible quality and I don’t get consistent sprays with it. I would think a niche brand like Houbigant would put a little more effort into their bottle. I have $20 Lalique fragrances with infinitely nicer bottles.

Who this is for: Fans of ultra masculine green fougeres who want a fragrance with good price to quality ratio. Collectors who either don’t have something in their collection with this fragrance profile, or those that don’t mind a bit of redundancy.

Who this is not for: Fans of modern sweet fragrances. Those on a smaller/tight budget. Those who own Drakkar, Lomani Pour Homme, Bon Monseiur, Caesars Man Legendary Cologne Spray, Eau de Minthe, etc. and don’t want redundancy in their collection.

Everything in Green?
Moss.
Pale cool lichen in the twilight dark.
Creaky green freshness.

Citrus fruits.
Overripe and bursting with juice.
Sweet sour. Ethereal tickling.

Lavender.
Warm sun-drenched flowers.
Enchanting, seductive
Violet glow.

Amber.
Fundamentally supportive.
Warm.
Enduring.

Simultaneously and exactly in this sequence.
Mixed, intertwined, shimmering.
I can’t sense more.
I don’t want more either.
But.
More. Exactly that.
P.S.
Outburst in the first exuberance.
Surely not a helpful comment.
Sincere thanks to Mokka, who unsolicitedly held this fragrance under my nose.
First "Wild", now this - am I really a Green?
Confused.
And, dear children, please do not try this at home.
I have hardly any experience with this class of fragrances, maybe it’s just mediocre soap after all.

Hasta la vista, Tonka
So Moos Alta, this doesn’t smell at all like fruity vanilla berry. You can only wear this if you’re at least 80+. And this one, it’s not only not sweet at all, but also so cloyingly citrusy in the top note. When Grandpa thinks he needs to hit the disco one last time. As old-fashioned as the garden of the cathedral’s monastery in Cologne.

For all the leftover perfumes from 80+: my last vanilla pudding was 30 years ago. Milk mustache is called “Bumfluff” in English. Those who have seen a thing or two can wear something beautiful, green to enjoy, something classically herbal - but please, smooooth. Not for green boys on the prowl, but something elegant, with a bit of retro-modern charm - without sugar, please. The Duc Extreme is just the right one. A fougere without coumarin - at least I don’t notice any of it. If in the many world-famous fougeres the coumarin - a defensive substance contained in, for example, the tonka bean - ruins the classic at the end with this plant-sugary, vanillic sweetness - like in the Fougere Royale from the same house - then one should take this YouTube-hated (LT) one to heart. What’s served is a truly perfected moss after a citrusy green opening with the usual fougere-like heart combo. Simply wonderful! Moss often seems soapy to me, which I would accept alone. But sweet-soapy - yuck. Not this one. This one: a rather non-soapy, pleasantly unsweet, but completely sovereign fougere with style. Wearable for all from 15+ with heart and a spark in their eyes. Truly, buena vista!

Bathroom Scent and Childlike Imagination
L'Extreme smells green, slightly floral, slightly bitter, and has that typical "barbershop" note. However, it does so in a rather noble way. In an earlier comment about Linari Acqua Santa, I described it as being somewhat of a passepartout. With subtle application, it envelops the immediate surroundings of its wearer without being intrusive. You notice it, but it doesn't push itself to the forefront. Admittedly, it may smell a bit old-fashioned, but that's okay. This is not a scent for the masses, but for a select few. When I imagine going out in the evening and leaving such a scent cloud in the bathroom? Not bad. In terms of age, I would say it's for the 50+ generation. During a trial of L'Extreme in a perfumery, several customers gathered and exchanged their impressions and scent ideas about it. It's interesting how many different opinions, feelings, and associations emerged. The funniest comment came from a little girl.
"Hey Dad,..... that's exactly how old people smell who have real money, like really."

In the following weeks, this remark stuck in my mind, and I paid more attention to the scent signatures of the crowd while celebrating and going out.

She wasn't entirely wrong.

Oh, I like it very much...
The bitter green of the forest, the ferns, and the fresh air! I love the scent of rosemary and lavender, which exudes a mysterious, herbal floral-spicy aroma. I enjoy the cool mosses, the shimmering green of the cushions that grow on old trunks. And the oak moss that hangs in long green-gray-silver filigree trails from the branches and twigs of the deciduous trees, spreading a fairy-tale "inky" smell.
The earthy scent as well as the aromatic balsamic notes of conifer resins. All of this is wonderfully combined in this magnificent Houbigant. It evokes a longing for cool autumn mornings and the atmosphere with fine veils of mist that rise from meadows and fields.
And it makes one curious about the cool spring and early summer evenings when the fern fronds unfurl and cover the leaves from last autumn.
I like the "old veteran" Duc de Vervins (L' Extrème), who climbs into high seats and comfortably observes the forest while smoking a pipe from a higher vantage point. And hears the deer roaring during the rutting season and delights in the sounds.
And I appreciate the gentle, good-natured core that resides within it. And its unconventional nature.

This smells like the perfumer wanted to combine all the best 70's barbershop fragrances. Drakkar, Polo, Paco Rabanne, Azzaro, etc

The quintessential fougere perfume. This is how my dad could smell like, showered and shaved, taking my mum to the theater in early 90's.

A fragrance profile that’s been done numerous times from niche to drugstore cheapies. But this one is on the S tier of shaving foam fougeres

Silky-smooth whipped barbershop soap, a lavender-herbaceous Fougère of the densest weave, complex, retro-cool, and very noble.
