Spicy Fig

I'm really enjoying this one. I'm a little surprised that I'm liking it as much as I do.
It's perfect for the warm spring days and summer and will work year around. It does start very green; Green fig leave, light black pepper with zero sweetness. After about 15 minutes it starts turning where you can smell the fig fruit and it has a light natural sweetness. The fruit takes over but the Fig leaf is still there. I can smell a soft pepper and dry spices. On the main accords above: I would amp up the green accord and dial down the warm spicy. To me, I get more FRESH SPICY

A Rhapsody of Fig

Houbigant is a very old house in the fragrance world. Founded in 1775 it still surprises us with their creations. It is often regarded as a classic perfume house. Since its history goes way back in the past, I can’t force myself labeling it as a niche or designer brand since these labels were made up recently and sometimes don’t really tell us anything. I don’t know about you, but when I hear the word niche, I catch myself imagining some funky-gothic-weird perfumes that no “mortal being” can fully grasp (probably because I was into THAT niche couple years ago). Houbigant, on the other hand, creates pretty “simple” but well-crafted things that I can imagine someone like Hermes would do.

Figuier Noir is a beautiful tribute to Fig. Starting from the slightly sweet but overall tart mix of fig leaf and spices, it evolves over time to a sweet-powdery (thanks to iris) fig fruit. The drydown welcomes your nose with sweet woody patchouli and fig fruit. Very spring-friendly. Simple, nothing funky or crazy here but I love fig leaf smell, my small fig tree has made it through the snowy winter, will enjoy the smell of it soon :)

The fragrance is very versatile and will suit everyone no matter the occasion or dress code.

Ripe black fig fruit, not the green fig leaf - Interesting but underwhelming

Figuier Noir is the first perfume I have tried from the house of Houbigant. Céline Ellena, the nose behind this perfume, is the daughter of Jean-Claude Ellena and is thus steeped in the perfumery industry and tradition in the Grasse region in France. This review is based on an original sample that I bought from Jovoy Paris online.

The notes for Figuier Noir listed on Jovoy’s website seem the most accurate to me. This list includes black pepper, clove, cardamom, fig tree, jasmine, iris, fig, cedar and patchouli. All the fig accords I smell are the black fig fruit and the sap from the fig tree. This is very different from the fig leaf perfumes like Dioriviera and Trouble Fete, where the green fig leaf dominates the olfactory pyramid. The opening notes in Figuier Noir according to my nose are fig tree sap, clove, cardamom and black pepper. The latter spicy notes are there, but they exist as a beautiful shadow without impacting the fig tree sap accord. This fig tree sap accord has a unique pungency, very different from the fig leaf accord. In the heart notes, the fig that you smell is that of black fig pulp. The floral notes – jasmine and iris – that are supposedly there, are too subtle for me to pick out. The black fig pulp, highlighted by the perfumer, is the hallmark of this perfume. Fresh ripe black fig fruits from a high-end grocery store smell like this, but in Figuier Noir this accord is turned up to the maximum volume. The base notes on my skin are cedar and fig, though these are mild. I don’t get much of patchouli in the bottom notes. After the initial spicy opening, Figuier Noir is essentially ripe black fig fruit.

The performance of Figuier Noir is good, not great. Despite the screaming fig accord in the middle, it settles down to a mild woody fig in 6-8 hours. The projection is not very large, I believe by design. The intensity of Figuier Noir is acceptable at workplace settings, but I am not so sure about the black fig pulp accord that dominates.

Figuier Noir is interesting to me from an academic point of view. But black fig fruit pulp is not very esthetically appealing to me. On Jovoy Paris online, Figuier Noir costs about $160 for 100 ml, which makes me less charitable in my critique. It may be worth the money if you are searching for an intense ripe black fig fruit fragrance. I admit it is unique for its high-intensity fig fruit accord. But test in advance to be certain.

The dark side of the fig

After burning through a small bottle of Fico di Amalfi way too quickly, I looked for a fig fragrance that was equally good but also strong enough to be actually perceived by people around me. I got to test the Houbigant discovery kit and was pleasantly surprised by Figuier Noir, I realised I needed the full bottle after I found myself taking the sample apart to retrieve the last droplets of the precious juice. A pitiful sight for sure.
Don't get me wrong, the scent is nothing like our beloved AdP fig, or most unisex fig fragrances for that matter. No citrus or clean notes to make this thing brighter, instead it veers towards a very green and pungent shade. I distinctively recognise the candied fig note on opening, which is bizarre given it's a base note, but perhaps the cardamom is playing tricks on my nose. That quickly dissipates to expose the darker notes, represented by black pepper and patchouli, softened by some bland floral notes and the prominent fig, which remains the superstar throughout the whole progression. The fragrance somehow manages to play well with my skin chemistry (which is rare), and balances the sweetness of the fig with its greenish blend, giving out a cozy but bewitching, multifaceted scent that widens my eyes every time I get a waft of it. The projection with two sprays is about 1-2 meters, and it lasts a couple of hours, which is good enough for me.
Figuier Noir quickly became my go-to scent in case I want something easy to wear but also sophisticated. Good for all occasions and pretty safe overall. Lovely stuff.

トップノートはパウダリーな感じ。他にもスモーキーな感じもあったかな。ほんのりイチジクを感じた。フィグリーフが入ってるみたいだけど、それは感じなかったかな。
ミドルノートはミルキーさが出てきてくれた。私的にはミルキーなイチジクの香りが好きだからそこは良かった。パウダリーさは無くなってたかな。
ラストノートは香りが薄くなってて感じにくいと思った。（付けて6時間くらい経過してる。）フィグだからフルーティに分類されるってのもあってさすがに長時間は香らないみたいだったね。
総合的に、私はボトルは買わないかな。買うんだったら他のにすると思う。ミルキーなフィグが好きだからこれは違うって感じ。トップノートの香りの強さは良いけどだんだん薄れてくのも気になったってのもあるかな。

It's fig, fig and fig! Fig lovers will love it. For me it's too much fig for daily use. I prefer Une Histoire d'Homme Irrésistible to this.
