Juicy green, stemmy, indolic nectar-dripping pollen-rich waxy yellow flowers
I’m starting to notice an annoying pattern: about 9 out of 10 times when I sniff a supposed “leather” perfume, I can’t smell any leather at all.

I thought this was supposed to be a cowboy perfume, but all I get is a rich, intensely scented yellow flower with a fresh, green, stemmy quality and a strong indolic honey-pollen that takes on a decidedly urinous quality in the drydown. At least we can all agree this one smells like piss.
I also don’t get any tonka bean and if there’s cumin, it’s very in the background.

You know when you get a fresh haul of perfume samples in the mail, and there’s one note that the whole package smells like when you open it? Well, in this case, it was unfortunately the urine note from Untameable. At first I wondered if someone’s cat had peed on the parcel.
To top things off, somehow while taking the cap off later on, I managed to partially unscrew the lid and spill it all over my fingers. Of all the samples I got this is surely the worse one to have an accident like that with. It took some effort to scrub the smell of my fingers and I think the outside of the bottle is permanently imbued with the scent. It's been several days and I still keep getting whiffs of it throughout the house. It's that potent. However, this repeated exposure to the more challenging aspects of the scent have made me realise how much I love it.

To me, in the opening it smells like walking past an intensely scented exotic flowering plant in the botanical gardens, probably something with waxy white or yellow flowers, and getting a noseful of that almost fecal nectar scent that some flowers have, and there’s fallen, decaying flowers all over the ground as well, getting crushed under your feet as you walk. It’s very photorealistic to that experience in my opinion, and it has a fresh airiness from the florals alongside the darker stinkier notes.
Then in the drydown, as the urine note comes out more along with a kind of creamy floral, it starts to remind me of moonlit, humid summer nights, walking through cobblestone alleys reeking of urine, past indolic creeping jasmines that drape themselves over the trellises in people’s back gardens. It reminds me of the thick, electric energy in the calm before a summer storm, the feeling of tension, danger and excitement.

I have not spent much time around horses, so I can’t really comment on the accuracy of a horsey scent here. All I can say is it’s mostly floral on me, and quite a sweet floral at that (but sweet in a natural honey/nectar way, not a foody way).

This scent is difficult to wear and SO strong and lingering. Unfortunately, the immense projection and longevity is too much for me. It’s inescapable, exhausting. There’s also the fact that I’m afraid to be around people within 2 days of wearing it. But it doesn’t change the fact that I love it.

Nicely done but provocative smooth, spicy, floral leather, semi-animalic
First proper wearing of the latest release from Imaginary Authors, Untamable, a dry, semi-animalic, leather-led blend with notes of tonka resin, saguaro blossom, Texas yellow star, and cumin. It’s fittingly a bit spicy and floral, which keeps it from leaning too animalic, I dare say, somewhat less animalic than Bull’s Blood, its closest logical comp, in my opinion. Still it’s quite intense, the sort-of-dry, sueded leather rather sharply pairing with the smoother floral and spicy components, making for a nice ensemble, a pungent experience that’s not overdone, in my opinion, and I generally regard myself as pretty selective when it comes to leathers than lean animalic.

I’d argue that Untamable is the line’s most daring fragrance since Whispered Myths and Bull’s Blood before, not entirely uncharted territory in perfumery but certainly in some respects it is very new for Imaginary Authors.

I really like that despite its provocations, it feels sophisticated and balanced among its contributing accords and ideas. And even though I might find a sweeter leather easier to wear most of the time, I think Untamable is an awesome achievement, something I would wear occasionally, particularly with the approaching cooler weather.

Untamable is in EDP concentration with the current standard brand pricing of $105/42 for 50/14ml, still an outstanding value in the current market and one that makes it possible to own so much of this storied house without breaking the bank, relative to other companies.

Tame Untamable
Updated this review with some additional impressions

In Untamable's case, "animalic" does not mean poopy or manure stink. Instead, there's a definite urine scent that is quite strong at the start but as that quickly diminishes, I detected more of a fur or hair type of scent - horse hair, I assume - along with the cumin. The cumin here is not the sweaty armpit sort but more of a musky funk that makes the fragrance warmer while still remaining dry and light - almost fresh. As the horsey and cumin scents became milder there also seemed to be a patchouli scent that I detected, even though it's not listed in the notes. Or maybe it could be better described as musty-woody. The leather was blended in more - I wouldn't call Untamable a leather fragrance with animalic aspects but the opposite - an animalic fragrance with leather aspects. There was also a dried grass or hay aspect to it as well, which seemed to be more overarching present except at the very end. Untamable is, if anything, a very interesting experience.

To my nose, I did not find Untamable to be terribly challenging and it was quite wearable after it settled down in 15 to 30 minutes. The best bet would be to apply Untamable about a half hour before going out. Longevity was quite good for me - I still had a good skin scent after 10 hours. Projection was more moderate.

Would I buy a bottle? Not sure at this point. While I did like it, I have many more scents on my shopping list that I like better. So, for now, probably not.

Horrible
Oh my GOD this scent is horrible. It came as a freebie with the sample set my husband got me for Christmas and after one spray we threw it away (outside). We called it the c*m perfume because it has the most disgusting human fluid smell.

If you want to test this one, I highly recommend doing it outside. We could smell it for days later and it made us legitimately ill.

Back in the barnyard
This was a really interesting perfume to experience.

At first spray, I get the cumin, leather, yellow star and horsehair notes. It's leathery, spicy, floral and very animalic. None of the notes are particularly overbearing and there is a very good blend of the spice, leather animalic accords with the floral aspect providing the perfect compliment to soften the strength of the other notes.

This smells like walking into a well-kept barn—the animals are in their stalls, everything has been recently mucked and there's fresh hay and feed for grazing. The horsehair note is so realistic and smells like farm animal (without the usual, off-putting poopy aspect).

The scent remained largely the same from the open to the close. The only noticeable change for me was the cumin note slowly fading throughout the wear. This lasted on my skin for over ten hours.

Overall, I really liked Untamable. This is a pretty strong fragrance and someone told me I was giving them a headache when I was wearing this. It's definitely not for every day but I enjoyed it as I'm becoming a bit more interested in leathery scents. I was surprised by how much I appreciated the animalic qualities of this. If you like either of those qualities, I'd say this is worth trying—just wear with caution.

A truckload of cumin, indolic florals. Slightly pissy, but also earthy, herbal, woody, coumarin sweetness. Easy with the sprays, VERY loud.

Fairly sweet! Cumin, a bit of tonka beans; the sweetness being provided by the saguaro. Slight leather smell, reminiscent to a horse saddle.

Very flowery and grassy with a touch of tonka/patchouli sweetness. Overarching, droning animalic accord. Modern, quite wearable, linear.

Expected an extremely animalic scent so to smell this aquatic cactus opener was a surprise. It soon gets warm, dense, hairy, less pleasant.

Think of an old leather saddle that has been sitting up in a crate in the attic, packed in horsehair and covered in dust & cumin.

Smells like dried-up urine on a side alley. Nothing equestrian or agrestic here. Major flop. Thumbs up for the realistic piss accord.

Powerful leather fragrance, and the cumin and horsehair make it noticeably warm and comforting. However, becomes overwhelming very quickly.

Hard pass! This reminds me of walking through the stables at the state fair. Animalic, all right.

Some reactions to this are VERY dramatic LOL. It's an old-fashioned yellow floral with an animalic/leather backbone. And it's very well-done
