A Lush Orange-Red Floriental
I was expecting Montale AOUD RED FLOWERS to be more about rose geranium than anything else. Otherwise, why not just call it AOUD ROSE? Oh, that's right: because there's already a Montale perfume by that name!

In reality, this is not identical to AOUD ROSE PETALS or AOUD DAMASCUS, because there is a significant dose of tagetes (aka "marigold," but that sounds so pedestrian!) here which the straightforward rose perfumes of this house lack. Add in some saffron and aoud, and voilà, you have a very complex and orange-red floriental perfume. This smells simply beautiful.

I love tagetes, I love rose, I love saffron, and I love oud when it does not smell like shoe polish and bandaids, which happily here it does not. (-; But my appreciation of this perfume derives above all from the skillful interlacing of all of these notes beloved to me. The blend is perfectly balanced, and the various components work together harmonically. AOUD RED FLOWERS is a lush, floral, feminine perfume which uses aoud as an embellishment, so don't think that this is primarily an aoud perfume, because it is not.

It seems to me that Montale has amply demonstrated that Lego perfumery, the construction of a perfume out of pre-made parts, is not guaranteed to end in mediocrity. No, not at all. AOUD RED FLOWERS is truly gorgeous, and I'd love to have a bottle of this!

At a Loss
I once set out to test all Montales. I’ll say it right away, I didn’t succeed, because at some point they just became too similar to me, and I felt that something was missing in all of them. It simply stopped being fun. So the testing series fizzled out. Now Peet has sent me another fragrance from this house, and once again I find myself a bit at a loss.

Aoud Red Flowers practically has no top note. I detect a muted dark rose, and I’m not sure if the other ingredients do it any favors. Not to mention that the calendula doesn’t have a particularly pronounced scent, Aoud "thankfully-unfortunately" doesn’t play a significant role, and the sandalwood is also used rather subtly; I again miss a component that brings the perfume to life. Well, the saffron adds a bit of spice, but it probably only serves an alibi function. They could have done more with this. I also can’t identify a base that could perfect the scent.

I wouldn’t run away from the fragrance. It’s not unpleasant at all, but I don’t need it. What bothers me, however, is the texture of Aoud Red Flowers, because even after an hour I have an oily film on my skin that simply won’t dry or absorb, even though I currently have very dry hands. Sprayed on clothing, I fear a splotchy disaster.

Montale sometimes does great things like Guerlain. Aoud Red Flowers is the clear evidence.

Elegant, opulent, extraordinary! Marigold & rose make a grand entrance in golden light with a hint of saffron on beautiful sandalwood! Seduction in winter.

Montale? Better not. But here I make an exception! French tradition meets the Orient.

Elegant rose-oud combo à la Montale. Unisex, good s&H. Suitable for festive evenings, opera, etc. in winter.

Strong oud, ring flower, rose combo at the start. Quite a linear progression. At the end, velvety-woody without losing character. H/S strong.
