Once Upon a Wood: A Cereal Odyssey

'Once Upon a Wood', but is that really all it was?

This fragrance stands at the crossroads of two worlds: that of wood, with its deep and natural notes, and that of the field, where the earth offers echoes of fresh grains. Despite its evocative name, the fragrance might have worn the title 'Once Upon a Countryside' more fittingly, as it would have captured its cereal soul more faithfully.

This fragrance doesn't seek to shake up conventions but rather to create a pleasant universe, albeit somewhat predictable. It transports us, yes, but not with the grandeur of an epic. More like a gentle stroll, a quiet countryside scent, unpretentious.

Through the forest, all the way to grandma's house

My most loved vetiver and dark green scent, hands down. Not only that, but it's a fragrance that I would totally wear to work or to an event. I'm a huge fan of green profile scents and love them in all their different aspects from light, fresh vegetal greens (think Synthetic Nature) to dark, mysterious greens like Bandit (2012) Eau de Parfum or its sunnier sister, Le Sillage Blanc. However, not all of these are perfumes I would invest in for daily wear because quite frankly, a lot of these are statements, or art works that are not exactly suited to the ordinary situations in which a woman would find herself in everyday life. Il Était Un Bois however is something I could see myself wearing a lot.

Il Était Un Bois is the perfume from a Brothers Grimm fairy tale, the ferns and grasses growing under a dark European forest canopy, a seldom trodden path through the Black Forest, Red Riding Hood hurrying through, throwing quick glances behind her as the sun is slowly dropping on the horizon. There's a peppery, herbal vibration of something slightly mentholated, like anise or eucalyptus. It's dusky, mysterious, slightly humid, superb.

My only pet peeve, why is it so hard to get your hands on these? Their European site at Harrods only accepts UK issued credit cards (royal bitch, please!), the customer service is totally clueless, and the websites are clunky and don't load properly. C'mon, L'AP, show some professionalism and concern for your clients!

It's ok...

It's masculine. It's woody. It's kinda fresh but in a balsamic way. It does remind me a bit of Mechant Loup and Fou d'Absinthe, but just a slight vibe.

It definitely transports me into a cold forest, with fresh cut woods and cold air. It's great, would consider buying it if i'd only use one perfume cause it smells like a signature fragrance of a nice 40/50s man.

Still studying it though, tried only one spray on my hand. Will write more if i catch up something more.

EDIT: Tried again and it definitely has vetiver all over it. it's a vetiver prominent perfume. I like it a bit less.

the flying squirrel in the enchanted forest

a perfume with the name "once upon a time there was a forest" ... very beautiful in my opinion but still sad to think that a forest "like this" will no longer exist.

Beyond the well-trodden paths, trunks overgrown with moss. Mist with dew reflecting on the leaves. Sun trying desperately to fight its way through the fog. Pale light that makes the forest look like a fairy tale. The smallest beads of water glisten everywhere on the delicate blades of grass that make their way through the fallen leaves into the light. With every step, a crackling of dry, rotten branches, small wafts of mist rising in the warmth of the sun....
This scent reflects exactly these images in me.

The earthy vetiver and cedar, paired with the light warmth of buckwheat.
A beautiful composition.
Spray on and let your mind wander. A fragrance that lets us escape from everyday life, wherever there are no enchanted forests.

I assume this is exactly why this fragrance was given this name.

I hope so much that such forests are not destroyed. We should think carefully about how to preserve such oases of peace, for us and for posterity. There are no more beautiful places of peace than the forest. This scent should not become a scent of memories, but a scent to feel good in.

It is not a fragrance that immediately overwhelms you. It unfolds really leisurely. I love this slightly warm, earthy, woody, green scent. Somehow it always brings you back down to earth when you're about to freak out. The longevity of "Il Était Un Bois" is very good.

This fragrance is really worth a little trip.
A journey into an enchanted forest ....
