This is not Anna Karenina...
"All happy families are alike, but ..." No. Wait. That's wrong!
"All patchouli fragrances are alike, BUT..." That's more like it :)
Every time I got a new patchouli fragrance, except that first psychedelic one, I said to myself "Never again. They all smell alike".
But, there is that capital BUT. Every perfume that I get, I give it a chance. Actualy, more than one chance. I have a rule "It doesn't matter if I initially dislike the fragrance, I will keep it for a year, and only then decide weather to let it go or keep it".
And with every patchouli fragrance, the story is the same. Initially, I am anoyed as it smells alike other pachouli fragrances, and... in the end I keep them all.
This one is no different. Powerfull, earthy pachouli. A little bit rough in the opening, but smooths out in like 10 minutes. A quality. A niche quality patcouly. Then comes oakmos, and a hint of incense, although it's not listed as a note. And in the background, powder. Actualy, it's more dust. Just like if you opened an old cabined, chest or a drawer. It took me a while to remebemer, but it's exactly that beautiful Habit Rouge "dust".
The sad part is, it's discontinued. I can understand why. This is not for a regular designer bloke. This is, just like the most of pachouly fragrances, for a hard core fragrance junkie.
Yeah, I love this one too.

Chapeau bas aux Gorilla !
It hardly seems right to speak about classic Gorilla scents, but if there were such a thing, this would be it. Totally unlike their dayglo fruity concoctions of late, this is an understated marvel. A simple thing, it does sort-of smell like a well worn hat : dirty - animalic greasy felt, rubbed with castoreum. There's not much to it, but what there is is spot on, just right.
I suppose, if you like it, you'll love it. If you don't, you'll probably wonder what all the fuss is about.
Leather perfumes rarely do it for me, they often seem fake. This however, whatever it is, it's the real thing.

Tender Herb Temptation
“The President’s Hat” always reminds me a bit of dark chocolate, but beware: it doesn’t actually smell like chocolate!

Both dark chocolate and the fragrance are dark and heavy, bitter, slightly bitter, yet they conceal a certain sweetness, are comforting and soothing, and with their unmistakable allure can sometimes present a great temptation that is hard to resist. But just as one doesn’t always want to eat chocolate, “The President’s Hat” is not suitable for everyday use; it requires targeted application at the right moment, primarily in winter and more in the evening, meaning it is, at least for me, not an “anytime fragrance.”

“The President’s Hat” is visually not a light fragrance; the liquid itself is a relatively dark golden-brown color. It is spicy, slightly woody, somewhat dry, has a significant smokiness, and is dominated by a strong patchouli note, next to which the vanilla hardly stands a chance. Those who desire a more pronounced vanilla note should rather try “Stayin’ Alive” by Gorilla Perfume. The sweetness and restrained warmth that seem to stem more from labdanum fortunately never take over; the bitterness and strength are always present. Longevity and sillage are very satisfactory.

“The President’s Hat” belongs to “Volume 3 - Death, Decay & Renewal” by Gorilla Perfume. It is available in 10 ml bottles with a pipette and as a 50 ml spray, and so far, it is only offered at the Gorilla Shop in Islington, London.

Nocturnal Ode to a Fragrance
It's been a long time since I've sniffed something so natural, earthy, and "myrrh-like." It must have been around the late 70s or early 80s. Back then, in large supermarkets like "Plaza," "Wertkauf," or "Co Op," there were small 20ml bottles from the company "Nerval" in the cosmetics and drugstore section, featuring various patchouli fragrance oils with names like "Wild Love" or "Mystik Love," which always smelled so wonderful. I must have emptied 5 or 6 of those. The quality was top-notch.
And now I have something similarly marvelous before my nose. This wonderfully mystical blend of balsams and resins. The myrrh immediately spreads out. Followed by a leisurely, deep rumbling patchouli and the dark aromas of labdanum. This powerful and mysterious impression lasts from beginning to end. Now the delightfully "inky" oakmoss joins in with its fairytale forest aroma, which completely captivates me. A pinch of vanilla adds warmth. The "finished" fragrance is not linear, as all the ingredients alternately connect with one another. Very lively and yet deeply relaxing in its calming, centering way.
Why it is called "The President's Hat" is probably due to the imagination of "Lush." Perhaps it was meant for quirky characters like Mr. Trump. If they wore the "fragrance hat," they would probably be much more relaxed, reasonable, and less loud?? ;-))

Lord of Misrule's big brother
When I first caught a whiff of "the presidents hat," I immediately thought: you know this one!
Yes, the dominant herbal-patchouli note is very reminiscent of that in "lord of misrule" (also by Lush).
This very distinctive patchouli remains in the foreground throughout. But what distinguishes the two fragrances then?
LOM starts off a bit more herbal due to the pepper than TPH, but it ends in an herbal-vanilla creaminess. In TPH, the aforementioned patchouli dominates at first, and it takes a while for the scent to become "softer." This is mainly achieved through the gentle oakmoss, with hardly any vanilla detectable.
The scent becomes calmer; "grounded" is probably an apt word. And although it could now almost be described as cozy, it does not lose its herbal, earthy "hard shell." The fragrance does not become creamy or sweet; it takes on a soft green-earthy note. Deep down, I still think I can smell soap. Not perfumed Dove/Nivea soap, just classic soap.
TPH reminds me of thick, checkered tweed fabric, dark oak furniture, and evening walks in the woods. A kind of old-fashioned yet timeless elegance. I can imagine the scent on a gentleman in a pinstripe suit (and of course with a hat), as well as on a strong and independent forester.
The scent was an experience for me, and I like it a lot. However, for me personally, it is too herbal. I would like to add that the fragrance is by no means "uneven"; it is really well balanced. Just for those who enjoy strong, herbal scents.

I haven't smelled anything as wonderful as "Myrrhisches" in a long time. Deep incense and patchouli like good earth, a bit of vanilla for warmth and fine smoke!!

A slightly resinous spiciness blends with sweet earthiness for a scent that retro fans will love. The 80s have their chic down pat.

Balsamic warmth, myrrh, subtle amber accord on a stable duo of patchouli and oak moss, modern, unisex, H and S rather subtle.

Balsamic, slightly bitter sweetness, very well-made scent. It would be my 100% fragrance if osmanthus had been used instead of rock rose. Worth a try..
