MY Fragrance!
Many years ago, I stumbled upon a small perfume bottle in a friend's bathroom. Out of curiosity, I smelled it - and the fragrance captivated me from the very first moment.
The perfume was "Mystery" by Naomi Campbell, and it smelled like no other perfume I had ever encountered before.
I fell for the scent from that moment on, love at first sniff, so to speak.
When production was discontinued, I was devastated. And to this day, I really don't understand why, and I suspect that there were some internal discrepancies in production...
Perhaps the perfume creator had a falling out with management. (Same story as with "Azuree Soleil" by Estee Lauder - created by Tom Ford - who then released a knockoff called "Bronze Goddess" several years later that didn't come close to the original...)
Because why else would Naomi Campbell now, over ten years later, have launched a perfume called "At Night" that is clearly an imitation of "Mystery"?
Years passed, and I kept searching for that one, very specific note from "Mystery," that dark, mysterious scent, of which I still don't really know what makes it special...
I now suspect it is the tonka bean, and this fragrance note is one that fascinates me in other perfumes as well.
A few weeks ago, I browsed in the local perfumery. More by chance, I turned once again to the scents of NC.
When I spotted the bottle of "At Night," I had an intuitive feeling that it might be reminiscent of "Mystery."
When I sprayed the scent, I nearly burst into tears of joy.
There it was! There was that one fragrance note I loved above all else! It was hidden under quite a bit of "junk," a whole array of indefinable, somewhat dusty, minty fragrance notes... But it was there!
It was as if you were meeting an old friend after a long time... A friend who now wears different clothes and has a terrible hairstyle that doesn't suit her at all... But when you see her smile and she hugs you, you know: Inside, she is still the same!
Impatiently, I wandered around the perfumery after spraying "At Night"... Waiting... Anticipating... Hoping that this one, specific note would become more dominant over time... And it did!
After twenty minutes, it was there, not exactly the same as in "Mystery" - but as close as it could possibly be.
It's true, yes: It has to share its presence with this strangely minty fragrance note... Which is bothersome at times, but at other moments brings a certain lightness to the perfume.
"Mystery" was more sensual, even more gourmand-like, rounder, softer...
"At Night" is fresher, more masculine, not quite as balanced.
And yet, for me personally, it is the best perfume I currently own.
Apart from "At Night" (or actually "Mystery"), there are only three other perfumes whose magic has captivated me with such conviction:
- "Azuree Soleil" by Estee Lauder
- "Hypnotic Poison Eau Sensuelle" by Dior
...and "Le Male" by JPG.
And now comes the really funny part: To my nose, "At Night" smells extremely similar to "Le Male" - it is essentially the female version of it!
In fact, many of the fragrance components are the same! And: There is tonka bean in "Le Male" too... :)
I am just happy that I can now wear my beloved fragrance note on my body again, even though the perfume unfortunately isn't quite as successful as "Mystery."
Points are deducted for these (perceptible to me) slightly dusty and minty notes in it, of which I don't know what they are.
And especially this minty note disrupts the perfume at times like this:
The scent tends to pull you in a dark, mysterious direction... Like a pull that promises mystery but could also mean danger. And then the mint note screams: "No, don't go there! That's dangerous! We must stay nice and clean..." In such moments, it just annoys me.
But at other moments, it also gives the perfume a certain stability, makes the scent fresher and thus more suitable for everyday wear.
I would have loved to be swept away again by all my senses by this dark, mysterious pull... But well: You take what you can get, and being in a relationship also means making compromises... ;)
Lastly, a brief note on the longevity of the scent: Unfortunately, it is very mediocre - or poor, to put it bluntly.
I bought a large bottle for home - and a small one for my handbag, for on the go.
Just a quick word about the design of the bottle: I also preferred the one from "Mystery" with its softly blending colors much more than this rather clumsy phallic-shaped bottle of "At Night"...
But then again: Love means making compromises... ;)
