It was the one... the throne remains empty.
My number 1 of perfumes, undisputed. The throne remains empty.
It was love at first sniff, I was about 13 years old, standing in the local drugstore, I believe it was before Christmas.
What attracted me most was the color (and of course the price). I didn’t have much money at that time. All that pink girly stuff didn’t appeal to me at all back then. The blue was something different.
The first spray and I was done for.
It was a gift set with a small velvet handbag.
But who did I buy it for? For my mother as a Christmas gift.
She wasn’t particularly ambitious when it came to giving gifts, always stressed, being a single mother with 3 children.
So the joy was even greater when I actually received this perfume for Christmas. We actually gifted each other the same perfume.
In my youthful insecurity, the scent was too good for me. I still had to learn what self-worth is and dare to embrace it. Perfume, makeup, etc. It was all just beginning for me.
The scent contributed significantly to my self-worth.
It belonged to me for years. Other perfumes came and went, but the love for this one was simply different. It always stood in the cabinet. One of only three perfumes from which I have emptied multiple bottles.
At some point, it was discontinued, and I got busy with other things. In short, I didn’t even notice, didn’t stock up. Somehow I thought, oh I’ll find something comparable if necessary. Now and then, an overpriced bottle from eBay would come my way. But as of now, nothing can be found anymore.
Like a lost favorite stuffed animal, I will always mourn it.
About the scent:
For me, it is very fitting as the name suggests. It is something mysterious, it starts a bit fizzy and cool through the bergamot, over time it becomes warmer but the coolness remains! Light, really lightly oriental but so well dosed that it is absolutely suitable for daytime for me. Not cloying, not at all, not opulent or matronly. Citrusy start, lightly fizzy in the nose with woods and resin, a bit of sweetness from the plum. Amber, benzoin, jasmine, and galbanum. For me, it always suited me perfectly over the decades. Extraordinary but not hard to get used to. Nothing is dosed in a way that could be bothersome. Perfectly balanced for me. Between day and night, warm and cold, light and dark. Simply perfectly rounded.
I must rate the price-performance with a 10, as it was really inexpensive. It was simply my signature scent and would still be today (20 years later)
The bottle, of course, is not worth mentioning. The color matched the scent very well, otherwise, it was made very cheaply. But it doesn’t matter.
Sillage varies depending on the dosage, more or less noticeable but nothing that fills entire rooms.
Longevity: I always perceived it well the next day. Of course, not all notes were still there. But it was always present.
Everyone will have to measure themselves against this one now.
I have been using Armani Code since its release, my new signature. I love that one too. But not even close to how I feel about Mystery.
