Wisteria Blue - A Refreshing Aquatic Floral
For a while now, I’ve been curious about what the iconic Penhaligon’s Bluebell smelled like, after learning that it was one of Princess Diana’s favorite fragrances. My mother has always been interested in the late Princess of Wales, and I have my bouts of curiosity towards her, too. That being said, I’ve yet to get my hands on a decant, and a bottle would be too expensive a blind buy. That’s when I saw a number of reviews comparing Penhaligon’s Bluebell to Jo Malone’s Wild Bluebell, and the latter to this Nest fragrance. Seeing as Nest is the most affordable of the three by far, especially as I bought it on a discontinuation discount, I decided to go for it.
I cannot speak to the truth of the Penhaligon’s or Jo Malone comparisons, but I can say that Wisteria Blue is a delightfully fresh, soft, clean floral that feels effortlessly perfect for spring, or perhaps even cool summer mornings. The wisteria note in this fragrance pulls towards lilac for me, a flower I am intensely fond of; my mother grew lilacs around the house, so every spring was brought in with the breeze carrying their scent through the windows. The jasmine and rose notes aren’t quite so distinct to me here as I feel they merely support the wisteria.
There is, towards the end, a subtle depth or “darkness” to the scent, if you will. I’ve read that wisteria can have a slight note of clove to it, and I wonder if this, combined with the rose, is creating that effect? It is by no means a deterrent. I still find the scent pleasant and light even with that hint of something deeper.
As far as longevity goes, I get around 6 hours, and longer if I apply the scent to my clothes as well. The sillage is soft, so it’s a perfect scent to wear to work or around others who may be sensitive to stronger fragrances. This seems consistent across the Nest line.
The bottle shape itself is very simple, but if you’re like me and have a fondness for botanical illustrations, I’m sure you’ll appreciate the art on the bottle and the packaging. It’s quite charming!
If I had to translate the experience of wearing Wisteria Blue into a mental image, it would be this: Gentle light is pouring in through an open window on a quiet spring morning. The breeze flutters the curtains, carrying in the scent of a flower garden that is dewy from a mild rain that came overnight. You can still smell the mild soap you used to wash your bedding the day before; everything feels airy, subtly sweet, and refreshed. You can take your time enjoying it, as there’s no need to rush off anywhere. For now, you can breathe in the spring air of dew and flowers, and simply be.
